Birds and the bees - Heats and Ruts

There are 3 kinds of Heats and Ruts for each. From a glance they look very similar but they have their key differences.

Heats :

Warm Heat :

It is a mild form of natural heat that manifests in freshly presented omegas so they can ease themselves more smoothly into their dynamic. For most of the time the omega displays symptoms of normal heat without the increased sex drive attached. They may be confused and in need of comfort so be sure to cuddle and support them. Their scent changes but instead of it gaining seductive tone , it changes to sweet one that makes you want to put them in a burrito blanket and protect the omega with all your might. There are 3 warm heats that omega will experience in their teens - One when you present and 2 two additional after- and they will not have them untill they are around 50 years of age. They last around 5-6 days.

Natural Heats :

It is the most commonly known form of a heat. Omega is in their most vurnerable and primitive state when insticts overrule logic. They are the most fertile, producing massive amount of slick and their scent changes to a sweet, seductive undertone that quickly spreads into the surroundings, affecting all people nearby. Heats without a mate are often more painful and frustrating without someone to relieve them , so omegas often reach for special toys to smooth over the tides. Average Normal Heat symptoms procceed to look like this.

Induced Heats :

The are the most annoying and unpredictable out of all of them. Induced Heats often occur when omega has smelled a scent of a compatible mate, alpha's for the most cases OR if they smell their mate in state of Rut. They are often the most painful when they don't have a person to help them through it, because body had no time to gradually accomodate changes , resulting in sexual frustration and more intense cramps. The result of it is that those unmated heats last around 3-4 day old. If the induction happened because of their mate, then the heat persists for the same time as their rut.

Important note regardless Heats : If you see unmated omega in heat that you don't know or had previously expressed their dissaproval of you , DO NOT APROACH THEM. They are as previously described in their most VURNERABLE and PRIMITIVE state, so if they deem you dangerous or incompatible they will NOT hesitate to defend themselves and attack you with everything they got. The warning growl is a sign that you should leave them alone and if you don't then don't be suprised when your face will look like a swiss cheese¯\_(ツ)_/

Ruts :

Warm Ruts :

Similarly to warm heats, warm ruts is a muted version of natural rut, where alphas can be more easily acclimated to their designation. They have milder symptoms and don't have the sexual drive attached to it. Teen alpha will experience 2 warm ruts in puberty, then won't see them untill they are around 60 years old. They will be snappy, nagging , possesive and restless so when you see them in the kitchen acting like they are 3 star chef and nagging people into eating, then quietly indulge them and don't go into their room when the height of it comes, you don't want to be mauled after all.

Natural Ruts :

It is the most common type of Rut that last around 5-6 days where they are the most fertile and have the biggest chance getting someone pregnant. It will be the most manageble with their mate, being more agreeing and dolice around them, if the alpha doesn't have one then seclude a room and give them their space to get through their rut. Average Natural Rut looks like this :

Induced Rut :

They occur when Alpha smells omega in heat nearby Or when their mate is in heat themselves ( If alpha is mated then Strange omega's heat scent will have little to none effect on them ). They often last as long as the heat of the omega. Symptoms are often more intense than normal and the itch in their teeth will be intesified. Please note that the alpha in preheat will still be lucid and aware enough to think the situation throught so them acting on the instinct and ,,aiding" omega through their heat regardless is NOT okay.

"TRUE MATES" OMEGAVERSE AU EXPLANATION

Hi, guys! So, I have this Omegaverse AU I like to call the "true mates" AU. I'm currently working on a full length slow burn fic in this AU and decided to write out a full explanation of aspects in this universe that are relevant, just to have on hand for my fic.

SCENTS

Scent glands are located:

Under the jaw (on both sides)

On the crux of the shoulder and neck (on both sides)

On the inner thighs

On the inner wrists

Scent blockers come in both sprays and roll on versions, like a deodorant. It dampens a person's natural scent. Scents display strong emotions and can trigger other designations instincts (i.e. an omega's distress will put anyone nearby on guard). People use scent blockers out of politeness and manners- its seen as rude to "flaunt" your scent openly as an adult. Its more acceptable for pups with immature scents to not wear scent blockers since their scents are still maturing and developing and scent blockers may interfere with a scent's development.

MATING/BONDING

The terms "mating" and "bonding" are synonymous and can be used interchangeably. A mating bite is formed when a scent gland is bitten hard enough with either omegan or alphan canines which were evolutionarily developed for this express purpose. Betas cannot form mating bites because they don't possess the correct canines.

A bond is formed when two people perform a mutual mating bite- if only one person forms a mating bite, it won't stick and will eventually fade. A bond only forms when a mating bite is mutual and two people bite each other's scent glands.

A newly bonded/mated couple should not be separated. Instincts are heightened and both omega and alpha can become violent until the bond is fully settled.

"Newlyweds" are sometimes referred to as "newlybonds". There is a special leave off of work called Newlybond Leave.

INNER ALPHA/INNER OMEGA

An "inner alpha" or "inner omega" is the more instinctual, less rational side of a person's designation. Most times imagined as an internal, separate version of a person that is led completely by their emotions and instincts and less by reason and polite society.

THE COURTING CHASE

Running away from an alpha is seen as an open declaration of wanting to mate and is often used in courting. A courting chase between an alpha and an omega usually occurs in the last stages of courting, leading up to mating, as it triggers both the alpha and the omega's primal instincts. The omega's role is to run, the alpha's role is to chase. Running away is the invitation and giving chase is the acceptance. If the alpha catches the omega, it "proves" that the alpha is worthy to be the omega's mate.

TRUE MATES

A "true mate" (or "soulmate") bond is when a compatible alpha and omega first meet and their designations (or "inner alpha/inner omega") decide they are completely compatible. The alpha/omega are sent into their respective cycles within 24 hours to insure a mating/bonding takes place. "True mates" are regarded as extremely rare and highly sought after, often romanticized in stories about "The One".

Hello friends who nest!

Whether you're kin, a regressor, or miscecanis, you might be affected by what I call the nesting season, and want to nest all the time! 🪹

So I decided to make a little post about stuff I like in my nest to maybe give some of you ideas or just some comfiness reading it, because nesting is taking up like 80% of my brain right now- 💚

My essentials are: 🪹 Blankets (the fluffier the better) 🪹 Plenty of pillows 🪹 A tons of plushies 🪹 Orange essential oil on the stuffs 🪹 A cedar or orange candle/incense 🪹 A cosy drink (like coffee with some cinnamon) 🪹 A cosy show or podcast 🪹 Some snacks! Modifying my kemonomimi ears! (A Guide)

So, I bought a pair of dog ears off of Etsy around a year ago. And they’re… a bit rough.

My main issues with the look of these ears:

The fur is just way too long. I wanted to go for a more “blonde german shepherd” look, and the fur was just too shaggy.

The blonde is too blunt. By that I mean, it’s almost entirely blonde with little variation. So, I wanted to add a bit of variation to the fur color.

I decided to use a reference photo to help me with the new look of my ears. Specifically, I looked up blonde german shepherds and went from there.

Materials

For this, I used

Kitchen scissors

Small bowl of water

Small comb

Paintbrush

Eyeshadow

The small bowl of water is to clean the fur off your fingertips, because the fur WILL GET EVERYWHERE.

The small comb is because, after a year, the fur was a bit tangled, and i wanted the ears to be as clean and untangled as possible to see what I was working with.

Trimming the Fur

The fur is too long. So, we’re gonna trim it! For this, I used straight up kitchen scissors, so whatever you can find will work.

Note: I’ve been cutting my own hair for a very long time, so I used to my experience to guide how I cut the fur.

Coloring the Fur

For this, I used

Brown eyeshadow

Cream eyeshadow

Paintbrush

And that’s it!

I applied brown eyeshadow to the very base so it would blend more seamlessly into my light brown hair. Then, I applied cream eyeshadow to the tips of the white fur to break up the block of white into something more natural. German shepherds also have this little outline of brown in their inner ear, so I added that as wel.

Let's talk Courting! (Long Distance Edition!)

The main aspects of courting

Gifts

This one is super easy to do over long distance! Amazon has a wishlist feature that allows you to make a list and whoever you share it with can buy off of it! If you don't like supporting Amazon, you can make a google doc wishlist and add links to it when you see something you like online! Your mate wants to be the one to choose the gift? Easy peesy. Here's a guide on how to send something larger than a letter in the mail: Step 1: Choose gift! Step 2: Go to the post office to pick up a box big enough for the gift. Step 3: Package gift! (Add a letter, some teabags, some candy, a poem, maybe some art if you're artistically inclined). Make sure the address you're sending it to is correct! Step 4: Go to the post office to mail your package. They will weigh the package and give you the price based on the weight. If it's light, prepare for $5-$10. If it's heavy, it could go anywhere up to $60+, so be prepared to spend a lot of shipping if its VERY heavy.

Food

This one's a bit tougher to do long distance, but not impossible! You can deliver food to your mate's house through a food delivery app (UberEats, Doordash, Postmates) OR you can even delivery groceries to them through Walmart's (or your chosen grocery store) website/app. If that doesn't sound good, you can always order them non perishables online to send to their house (even in bulk)! Jerky, Japanese snacks, their favorite chips or sodas (wait to open any soda you get in the mail LOL). You can even send them food in the above package, but check you post office's laws/rules regarding food you can send in the mail and NEVER send perishable foods like bread, meat, cheese, etc. Stick with snacks! You can also send recipes in the mail for your mate to try out if they cook at home! Jewelry

Yup, this one is separate from gifts! Jewelry itself can be very personal/personalized to suit you and your mate.

Here are my recommendations: Necklaces! Similar to a collar, a necklace can be ornate or a more practical simple chain or charm. This is good for couple's who want that added "ownership" in their relationship/dynamic, and it has an added bonus of sitting over the scent glands on your neck!

Bracelets! Decidedly more casual, but still works with that "ownership" angle. You can go with a dainty or sturdy chain, maybe even charms, jewels, or a leather cuff is very popular!

Earrings! Very front and center- my recommendation is gold or silver hoops! Something for nice occasions or even just every day wear (just don't sleep in them)! Earrings are good for being very obvious if you want everyone to see your claim.

Nest/Den Materials

That's right- the big one! Here are some materials to give your mate for their nest/den if they have one! Clothes: You can send your mate your clothes (scented or otherwise!) for their nest/den, or you can order some online that they might like! Hoodies and scarves are my main recommendation since they carry so much scent on them. Blankets: Again, you can send your mate some of your blankets or order some offline! Great for nesting with. Stuffed animals: The same as above! If your mate has a stuffed animal they've been eyeing for awhile, now's your chance! This is great for nests AND dens! Cologne/Perfume: Pick out a cologne/perfume that smells like you and send it your mate's way! A great way for you mate to have your scent on hand for their nest, den, or even just their own clothes!

Letters

This is my own bias, since I've been sending and receiving letters for years, haha! But letters are a great (and inexpensive) way to court your mate!

Since I know sending letters has fallen out of style, here's what you should put on your envelope once you're ready to send:

You can buy stamps from your post office or online (there's more styles available online)! If you order your stamps online, make sure it's from your post office's website/app, as those are the official stamps you can use.

You can (and should) add extra stamps if your letter seems particularly bulky! If you're not sure, add an extra one just in case. If you don't have enough stamps on your letter, it will just be sent back to you.

What to put in your letter:
