My speciality is NOT normal type so take what I'll say with a grain of salt, but "normal type" doesn't exactly refer to "normalcy" as we see it— let me elaborate.
Type classification isn't perfect, but it takes into account both genetical heritage and physiological characteristics, which is why some Pokémon like charizard can look like a dragon type yet not be one : appearance doesn't make anything.
"Normal type", in my opinion, feels a little an outdated terminology, but if I recall correctly it was coined to refer to Pokémon who didn't have any strong leaning towards an element! So Pokémon like meowth or eevee were classified as "normal" because there wasn't anything else showing a leaning towards another type. It's... A bit of a mix and match classification because of it.
Later on, Pokémon like jigglypuff were taken out o normal typing after phenotypical and genetical analysis of multiple Pokémon revealed the existence of a fairy typing— or at least that's what I remember learning anyway.
I'm not going to argue that it's a bit of a weird type, but I wanted to try my best at an explanation anyway o7
Pokemon scientists explain how this dude is normal enough to be classified as a pure normal-type
#pokemon irl#rotumblr#rotomblr#maple reblogs#Pokémon like Pyroar being normal type despite having a fire type also#is mostly due to genetic ancestry#it's hypothesized that it developed a fire typing later down the line of evolution#fascinating stuff but by god it's confusing even for me#If types weren't so prominent in battling I honestly think the scientific world would've tried another way of classification#also hey nice absol pfp!

Bitches be like "ooooh your Pokémon secretly hate you they want you dead!!" Ok then. Explain why pyro is nuzzling next to me in the winter when I'm cold while he could just go near the fireplace to stay warm. Explain why Soleil wags her tail when she sees me come home. Explain why Roxanne covers me in blankets when I'm sleepy at my desk. Tell me why Slasher and Crusher trust me enough to wash their faces under their fur. Explain literally anything about Xeen following me when I tried realising it Multiple TIMES during my internship.
If you think your Pokémon secretly resent you then maybe you're the problem and you're a dick <3

it’s always ‘competitive battlers don’t care about Pokemon’ but like every competitive battler I know is like . This is my garchomp. She has sad wet eyes and so sometimes I have to put her in sweaters to calm her down. Also she has won several championships.
#Obviously bad apples are everywh but most competitive trainers I've worked with were sweethearts who adore their mons!!!#in some cases there's Pokémon who won't have a good home in a casual owner's house unless said person is actively accompanying#I'm thinking of my beautiful son Crusher and Slasher the Zweilous#these guys NEED to fight on a regular basis they have a lot of steam#his previous owner ended up giving him to be BECAUSE they werent equipped to deal with that. but bigger#(crusher and slasher are a rare case of gigantism!)#even if I'm not a professional trainer anymore I can still offer them battles because I have the time and ressources#basically : don't judge people based on their occupations and think before you adopt

There's a lot of things that goes into it, actually! As someone who's currently studying dragon and dark types, I still have a lot to learn, but here's what I know!
A BIG part of this is, obviously, the Biology of the Pokémon! It's true that it varies a lot inside a type, but there's some common traits. Florges isn't a grass type because, while it has flowers as part of its body, Florges itself is unable to photosynthesise— a key feature of grass type! Think of it as a symbiotic relationship of sorts.
Other types like dragon are a little tougher though. This is where genetics come in! A lot of dragon types who "doesn't look like it" have been classified as such due to their genotype being very close to other dragons— but this also counts the expression of genes! Won't go too deep into it, but basically not all our genes are expressed all the time, and this can be quantified by traits also. Part of why skrelp isn't considered a dragon type, it doesn't express enough "dragon qualities". Said Qualities tend to translate into what moves the Pokémon can learn!
Type classification isn't absolute though. There's definitely some that remains a bit weird— especially normal type. Generally, a normal type is put there because they all have a similar genotype, but it also feels a little like a "trash can" type. Generally when it's tagged onto a Pokémon with a other primary type, it's because the Pokémon got a normal-ish genotype but not enough for full normal. So they just put both. Just to be sure.
Don't ask me about moves though I don't fucking know
Question for the biologists:
What goes into a Pokémons type classification? Like what makes a Dragalge more of a Poison/Dragon type as opposed to it's pre-evolutions Poison/Water typing? When a Floette fuses with it's flower to become a Florges, why doesn't it gain the Grass type? Why are Pokémon like Pyroar, Heliolisk and Farigiraf part Normal type? Are their elemental and psychic abilities just not as strong as other Pokémons? Does that warrant a whole secondary typing to signify that?
#maple reblogs#maple rambles#sorry op. i nerded out.#there's probably other things I don't understand yet that goes into this but that's the ways I've seen it done I think

Do you ever feel like your life was meant to be more grand than what it is now so you can't help but feel like you've gone a little too much to the right from the timeline you should be in? No? Just me? Okay.

I love it when eevee(lution)'s go:
They look so concerned...
#maple reblogs#Pyro does that whenever I open a bag of chips#either he's concerned about my eating habits#or he is intrigued and want a bite#probably both.

Maybe unpopular opinion but I don't think we should bring back fossil Pokémon as a whole. The first experiments were fun and all, but I've seen more and more people trying to ACTUALLY bring back the species and I doooon't think it's a good idea.
The people at the blueberry academy are already making me squint with their terrarium sometimes (it's not bad in itself, I like the concept, but the mixing of Pokémon from different regions all in one vague biome makes me nervous about how the relationship between them would evolve etc) but lately I've read a paper about them implementing extinct species and mmmmmmmmm.
The ecosystem is very fragile, just one disturbance in the chain can have grave consequences. Humans already have had enough influence on it, like, did Galarian Corsola taught these people nothing???
#pkmn irl#rotomblr#pokemon irl#maple says stuff#fossil Pokémon#Like. okay#not only could these species be taking niches from already existing mons#but also. diseases#their immune systems are DEFINITELY not built for our current era#they could end up carrying diseases and being a threat to themselves and other Pokémons#I am soooo tired of scientists playing gods. cara Liss or whatever her name is I'm watching you

Depends on the region I suppose! I didn't grew up with a rotom phone and they only recently began to be mainstream in Kalos? I remember during my internship in Alola I was already flabbergasted by a rotom dex and it was like. A few years ago.
Wait hold up, how common are Rotom Phones?? I've never actually had one and some kids at the Pokestore just called me old because of it
#maple reblogs#Then again Kalos always had a bit of an old fashioned mindset so it might explain why#Galar had rotom phones before Kalos I think#weird how it works!

Rye (he/they) here! I'm just a student trying to learn as much about Pokémon as I can and become a Pokémon professor. I'll be honest, I'll probably end up posting more about my partner, Patch, than any actual research. But feel free to test my knowledge or even teach me about your own Pokémon and experiences with them! :)
(Pictures of Patch are tagged "the patchwork")

The fact we haven't found any fossils of the "Paradox" Pokémon from area zero elsewhere in the region means they likely weren't around at that time, unless they were in an INCREDIBLY niche Habitat— although that doesn't seem to be the case.
Good Morning!
Now give me one fact about fossil Pokémon or you’ve failed.
