this is the last fully-written thing i have. i have plans for the next installment (pilots), and i have a roadmap that covers season 1 of VLD (or, at least, the points I want to get to), although i do need to rewatch it because some things definitely need to be axed or moved around (i'm obviously not just gonna rewrite it verbatim). to be honest i'm more interested in writing the interludes (i have three more planned out) than the main stories, but i still think it's important to show the characters before/during kerberos and during voltron

side note: i tried to "beef up" my writing this time around, aiming to have less lines of just dialogue and instead actually showing what's going on (i mean, i really like writing dialogue, but i also realize that readers are not necessarily going to conceptualize the story the way i do as the author). i'm fairly satisfied with it, despite taught that editing should take away instead of adding

i do have some other, half-baked stories that are not (directly) related to this series (although they might eventually become part of it (the signals'verse canon diverges from the main canon in a few ways that i'm not 100% committed to for these tangentially-related stories, but i can't eat my cake and have it too))

Summary:

Katie wanted to be excited. A part of her was. Hang out with her friends, eat food made with love—fun stuff. So what if she had woken up with a nine out of ten on the chronic pain scale? She'd been through worse.

She rubbed her eyes and tried to stretch. I have got to get a stretching routine, she thought. The thought was, thankfully, interrupted by a car pulling up and a person hopping out.

"You good?" Lance asked.

"No, I feel like shit. But otherwise, yeah. I'm fine."

something different. decided to infodump in the actual notes than in here, although do have things to say about it here.

i think my writing is too dialogue-heavy, and i need to work on actually writing scenes and settings instead of characters and conversations. i enjoy it, and i love writing the way people speak, but it makes the writing feel sparse in my opinion. it works for the kind of really short microfiction stuff that got me back into writing, but i think for more long-form stuff its suffering. a lot of times i want these stories to be longer, but my writing style lends itself more to short forms (this was a slight problem for signals and messages, which were both downsized significantly when i realized i couldn't write as much as i wanted to—strangely, the interludes always seem to end up larger than i anticipated). i'd like my writing to be more dense, which i am trying to work on. anyways

this went for a long time without a proper name. i originally called it microcosms, which is fine, i guess (i'm saving that for something else, now). the lyric title was more of an addition after the fact, but i would like to do more lyric title fics. there are some good lyrics out there.

let's talk about krolia. in this continuity she not only found the blue lion, but also left a record of it for keith to find. she's connected to it in ways i am hesitant to mention here since 1) i don't know if i want to commit to them and 2) if i do end up getting there it would be a bit annoying to spoil it here. also, he doesn't know she's an alien

i always thought the fraunhofer line thing was a bit silly with it matching the rock formations yadayadayada. here the rock formation line thing is meant to be a signal (!) from the blue lion, but it's not the fraunhofer line thing they're tracking to pinpoint it. idk, i wrote this months ago and any amount of research i did into that has been effectively erased

fun fact: i originally wrote it so the galra warship was replaced by two smaller fighter ships, under the idea that a giant fucking alien warship in the sky (as well as a flying mechanical cat) would set off some alarms on Earth. i put the warship back in because i want those alarms to go off. the drone fighter is just so lance can have an "oh shit, did i just kill a dude" moment that i think should happen in most kids tv shows

up next is the (as mentioned before) hunk's interlude. after that, i'm not sure. i mean i have a roadmap but nothing after that is concrete. namely, i need to wrap up The Rise of Voltron (what a pilot episode) while also figuring out how to manage keith's and shiro's interludes. the former should be manageable with the next planned major story (akin to signals and messages, tentatively titled 'pilots'—also, messages was originally called pilots), but to include both keith and shiro as interludes (well, shiro's is more of an epilogue like the three-body problem is more of a prologue), i need a fourth major story, which i only have vague ideas about. doesn't really matter, since i'll probably never get to it (hence why this lengthy write-up exists at all)

some implications in this chapter (also, stated in the tags): keith and shiro are brothers in this continuity. or, half-brothers, as i imagine it. they share a dad

also, somewhat implied in the last chapter is that keith and pidge know each other. this makes sense, considering their relatives' involvement in the kerberos mission.

keith and hunk also know each other, which will be detailed in the upcoming interlude which i may have talked about in the past. it's hunk's interlude, which wraps up the garrison trio interludes (the three-body problem, binary stars)

keith and lance do not know each other (however much lance refuses to acknowledge this), which is funny. as much as i love klance alas in this continuity they are meant to be platonic (unless...?)

this was written before Signals was finished, and although it was originally intended to go before the aforementioned fic in the series, the way it turned out i think it's better as an interlude between Signals and the next one (tentatively called Pilots), despite most of it taking place before The three-body problem. this, of course, means i'll have to write more interlude pieces focusing on single Voltron members, which may not be too much of an issue considering i've only gotten thru the first ten minutes of The Rise of Voltron in Signals.

This is an introduction, I suppose. I'm MapleSyrupPtarmigan (or Maple, or MSP, or M), capitalization optional.

I write things and like music, and like things and write music. I love cats and I almost have a degree in something. My legs, spine, and soul are in chronic pain but I'm the happiest I've been in years.
