“He’s the bad boy,” adds Brian Henson. “You can’t help but be attracted to the bad boy. But it’s scary for Sarah. That’s the important part about it. That’s what my dad was trying to do there.”
Scary but also exciting. It’s confusing from Sarah’s point of view. “At first, there’s this Jareth–’He’s the Goblin King, he’s scary, he’s the bad guy, he’s got my little brother,’“ Brian Henson continues. “Then this weird tension comes in with, ‘Yeah, but he’s also masculine; I’m attracted to him. He’s male, I’m female… but I’m a child. I wanted to be an adult; I don’t want to be an adult if that’s what that means.’ That is tough and delicate material that you have to work with carefully, and it’s extremely important. It’s also a big part of any teenager’s life as they start to figure out sexuality. And you can step wrong–but ultimately Sarah is the one who makes the mature choice.”
It’s a daring subject, not immediately comprehensible to every member of the audience–but it certainly seems to be clear to the girls who, like Sarah, were coming of age when they first saw the film.
“There’s a point in the movie,” says Froud, “where the relationship changes. We sort of get that when we arrive at the ballroom scene. Because once Jareth becomes sexual, he’s dangerous. And everybody, including the other dancers, backs away–’Oh, no–we really can’t go there.’ And we couldn’t. But it’s there all the same. That’s what gives this power to his character. It’s interesting how over the years people constantly respond to it. It speaks to generations and generations of young girls. It’s precisely the thing that we had been a bit nervous about portraying. But it really works.”

“I am first angry at the people who live among us, some of whom are family and friends, who support this repellent, orange, stomach-churning mess of a man — a complete loser who took no time at all blaming everybody but himself for the horrific plane crash that took the lives of 67 human beings. Next, I am angry at the tens of millions of United States citizens who couldn’t bother to vote at all, and instead stayed at home picking their noses and dialing up TikTok videos. I truly wish the worst for them. They, more than anybody else, deserve this. I have spent the past few months communicating with many Democratic Party activists across the country, and I can tell you most are seething about this incoherence from party leadership. This was from Christopher Webb, a Democratic Strategist in California, in response to my endorsement of Wikler yesterday: “I support you on that but I’m not endorsing. I agree he’s probably the best suited of the options we have, but I feel like we need a bomb-thrower, not a fundraiser. There’s a lot of absence right now (from leadership). Dude, it’s driving me crazy. What’s keeping me sane is knowing a lot of the rank and file like us see it, too. So I’m not crazy.” No he’s not. What’s crazy is following the same people over and over, who have proven they have absolutely no idea where they going. Time for a change.”

Abortion is not simply about a birth.
Abortion bans are about removing women from controlling their own bodies and making their own decisions.
Abortion bans are about removing women from spaces so that men have less competition.
Abortion bans are about empowering misogynists, sexists, rapists, and abusers.
Men who want abortion bans pretend they are not connected with rape culture.
Men who want abortion bans pretend boys are not impressionable and learn misogyny.
Men write abortion laws, not women. Men legislate abortion laws, not women.
Men benefit from abortion laws, not women.

kids these days who are fans of fall out boy and can just read the lyrics on spotify or whatever. do you know how lucky you are. when i was a lad you listened to an illegally burnt cd, heard a nonsensical string of syllables, and listened to it 100 times until you thought you know what was said. and then you got ahold of an album sleeve with lyrics and read the lyrics. and realise you were absolutely nowhere close.
