Random mini personal rant, but "mental illness is an explanation not an excuse" has to be one of the most misused and watered-down arguments on the internet currently. I completely get it's meant to point out when people do genuinely awful things and aren't held accountable, but I'm seeing it be thrown around for when people with mental illness even exhibit or admit symptoms of the illness they have, with no elaboration or nuance. Just basically another way of telling people "stop being depressed" or "stop having mood swings".

If you can't handle a subject that isn't clean or black and white enough for your worldview, don't try to teach others on it.

Adding onto this!! Red lighting is not only helpful for nocturnal animals, but it also in humans does not "trigger the neutralization of the rhodopsin" (National Parks Service), i.e. it has little effect on night vision in general. This is why astronomers often use red lights for checking maps and papers while they're out! It lets you see but, in the event it's turned off, you won't have to re-adjust as much as you would with yellow/white/blue light!
