Lair of the Broker

For @spectre-requisitions-exchange 2025 I got chosen to write for @masweird and I got to revisit the Shadow Broker for a third time :) Even got to play with fashion which we love to bond over. And also in doing research I discovered there was apparently cut dialogue after Shepard takes down the Shadow Broker that the Illusive Man calls The Broker an "old friend"? Though I bet it isn't the yahg since he's so anti-alien and so he is probably unaware of the change of command. I wish I'd been able to allude to that a little more but oh well.

The Illusive Man tasks Miranda with providing a distraction, and she can't believe what she agreed to…

He hadn't trusted Dr. T'soni and the drell, Feron, as far as he could throw them--which wasn't exactly a high bar, as he didn't trust any aliens. So he asked her to provide a little distraction; something to keep the Shadow Broker's attention while they procured Shepard's body from his hired Blue Suns. Though surprisingly, with all the credits at his disposal, even The Illusive Man couldn't tell her what she would be walking into, the Shadow Broker's identity a closely guarded secret. Miranda stopped as she caught sight of her reflection in a nearby surface, taking a moment to fix her hair and adjust the neckline of her dark teal dress, the bodice and slit skirt hugging her every curve and leaving precious little to the imagination. A gift from The Illusive Man for this endeavor. She ran her hands down the silky material, admiring the way it brought out the blue of her eyes before she took a deep breath and squared her shoulders, walking deeper into the Lair of the Shadow Broker.

The sound of her boots clacking on the metal floor echoed through the silent ship as she approached their office at the center of it all. She had expected some kind of security team, but the place was utterly devoid of life; maybe they didn't think they needed the protection, or they didn't want anyone to get close enough to unmask their true identity. But with the Illusive Man knowing enough to send her here, to the heart of the operation, that would probably change in the future, though for now she was grateful she wasn't going to have an audience. The doors opened in front of her to reveal The Shadow Broker calmly sitting behind a large desk, a huge and hulking figure shrouded in shadows.

“Miranda Lawson.” A deep voice rumbled out, making her whole body tense up. “My day just became far more interesting.”

“How do you–”

“Know who you are?” His deep laugh boomed through the space, the metal panes shaking at the sound. “You forget who you're dealing with.”

Of course he knew exactly who she was. He may have been the galaxy's biggest secret but he was far too good at what he did. Liara's visage appeared briefly on one of the screens behind him, reminding Miranda of her objective. She hooked a thumb under one of the spaghetti straps of her dress, tugging it off her shoulder as she took a step forward into the space and letting him get a good look at her even in the dim lighting of the room. He braced his palms against his desk and stood, making him even bigger and more imposing than he already was, his massive silhouette was like no species she'd ever encountered before and she swallowed hard, wondering if she'd made a mistake accepting this mission. He leaned forward into the light, revealing eight piercing black eyes that watched her with a predatory interest and a triangular maw lined with sharp teeth, the sight sending a shiver down her spine as she realized the amount of danger she was in if this didn’t go well. Whatever she had expected, it wasn't a yahg.

His gigantic body loomed over her as she rounded the desk and slipped in between it and him, perching onto the hard surface and shrugging the other strap of her dress off her shoulder, the intensity of his gaze as he watched her causing wetness to pool at her entrance. “The Illusive Man sent me as a gift, hoping I could convince you to consider a meeting, to discuss a collaboration of sorts.”
