It Chapter Two Review
Tumblr media
It Chapter Two is the new film based off the second half of Stephen King’s novel which is once again directed by Andy Muschietti. The film stars Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, and Isaiah Mustafa as the adult version of the characters we were introduced to from the previous film. Bill Skarsgard also returns as the evil Pennywise for the second chapter.
Tumblr media
Chapter Two takes place 27 years after the previous film and it sees the return of The Loser’s Club members as adults returning back to their hometown Derry and finally attempting to defeat the creature It, as it has returned and once again started its killing spree amongst the children of the town. Andy Muschietti’s first It movie was one of my favorite horror films for the year 2017 and I thought they did a much better job than the original television movie. The child actors were excellent and believable and Bill’s performance as Pennywise were my favorite things about that film. Chapter Two covers the second half of Stephen King’s novel where all of the characters are adults and in the new film I thought they did a great job with the adult actors taking over from their children counterparts. With the first film dealing with growing up I felt as if the second film dealt with what happens afterwards. Muschietti’s new film deals with more adult themes, and horrors as each of the characters are now adults and have to overcome their own past traumas in order to defeat It once and for all.
Tumblr media
Each of the adult actors portraying The Loser club members did an excellent job with my favorite being James Ransome who portrays the older version of Eddie. Bill Hader was also really great in his performance as the older Richie as well. Bill Skarsgard also delivered another fantastic performance as Pennywise. I really enjoy how he made the character his own and didn’t try to mimic Tim Curry’s amazing performance from the original. His performance in these last two movies were some of the highlights and really helped make Andy Muschietti films stand out and improve on what has come before.
Tumblr media
Overall I found myself having enjoyed the first It movie much more as I felt in Chapter Two the film kind of drags in the middle and it didn’t have enough of the kid actors to give it the spark that was there for the first movie. It Chapter Two is a worthy follow up to the first film and another great film put together by Muschietti and his crew. Overall I enjoyed both of these It films more than I did the original television movie.

Avengers Endgame Review
Tumblr media
After 11 years and 20 films the much anticipated finale for the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally been released. The new film titled Avengers Endgame is once again directed by the Russo Brothers. Without giving to much away, the film picks up right after the end of the last years Infinity War with the surviving Avengers trying to pick up the pieces after Thanos was able to successfully captured the infinity stones and wipe out half the population.
Tumblr media
Avengers Endgame is a huge film and it’s crazy how the Russo’s brothers were able to craft this second part of the film and make it a much different experience than last year’s Infinity War. I felt as if Infinity War moved straight to the point and really did not let up until the end of the film. With Endgame the movie takes its time to get going and it really doesn’t rely heavily on the huge action set pieces that made a huge part of last year’s film. By doing this we get more of the impact of Thano’s actions. The film does a great job on focusing on the characters and after 20 films and knowing each of the characters it really felt as if you’re on the final journey with them as they try to defeat this foe who successfully was able to achieve his mission. The film is a great fan service to all the fans who have watched all the films since the first Iron Man in 2008 as there are a ton of call back and references that really give the film the emotional push that’s needed.
Tumblr media
Each of the returning actors did an outstanding job in the film. After 11 years of films the actors have each grown into their characters and the chemistry between them is flawless. My personal favorites in this film were Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. It’s really amazing how they were able to pull this off as there are tons of characters throughout the film and the Russo’s are able to manage and give each of them a reasonable thing to do throughout the movie. The characters in this movie are the heart of the movie and the film makes sure that everyone knows that. With a lean 3 hour running time the movie takes its time in its pace and I really enjoyed that the movie didn’t fill rushed at all.
Tumblr media
Avengers Endgame is a finale for the fans and 20 films it’s an experience worth checking out in theaters as I’ve never seen anything like this done before. Marvel and The Russo brothers were able to craft a perfect ending to a story worth the 11-year journey.

Mid90s Review
Tumblr media
The new film Mid90s written and directed by Jonah Hill released onto more theaters this past week and I was able to get a chance to check it out. The coming of age film stars Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges, and Katherine Waterston. The film is about a young thirteen-year-old named Stevie (Sunny Suljic) growing up in Los Angeles during the 1990’s with his single mother (Katherine Waterston) and older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges) who befriends a group of young skateboarders.
Tumblr media
Wow Mid90s was a very deep and relatable film for myself especially growing up during the time period the movie takes place in. The first film by Jonah Hill is shot in an old school format and within the first 10 minutes of the film I was immediately thrust back into the 90’s with Stevie. There was never a date of the year during the film but the movie is shot with enough details where you can fill in the blanks of the time period. Hill’s film uses skateboarding and hip hop a lot of the film and I really enjoyed how its showcased in the movie. You get to see the good and the bad. The movie touches on a lot of deep topics that I was very surprised about and the film does a great job on each of the characters as I really ended up caring about everyone in the film. The movie doesn’t hold back on the troubles of real life and the journey a person goes on while making new friends and coming out of your shell. I could tell while watching the film this is a real deep and personal story from Jonah and the film is excellent in its storytelling.
Tumblr media
The cast of Mid90s was excellent. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Stevie and his skateboarding friends. They really felt like a group of friends and it was nostalgic watching them crack jokes back and forth and experiencing life. Sunny Suljic was really great as Stevie and he does an excellent job in carrying the film. I really enjoyed his journey from being an awkward quiet kid to actually finding a group of friends he could resonate with. The rest of the cast was also excellent as I really cared about each of the characters from the movie. Even after watching the movie I’m still here thinking about what could happen to Stevie and his friends in the future. The chemistry between the cast was outstanding and is a major highlight for the film.
Tumblr media
Mid90’s is an excellent coming of age directorial debut by Jonah Hill. With a deep and engaging story outstanding use of old school hip hop songs and great score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, there’s something in this film that should resonate with everyone. Being a kid growing up in the 90’s this film had a perfect nostalgic feel and Jonah and the whole cast did an excellent job on creating characters that I couldn’t possibly forget as it is a film I could watch multiple viewings.

Halloween (2018) Movie Review
Tumblr media
Finally had a chance to see the highly anticipated Blumhouse produced Halloween. The new film written by Danny McBride, Jeff Fradley, and David Gordon Green see’s the return of Jamie Lee Curtis in the titular role of Laurie Strode and also features the original film’s director John Carpenter returning to do the score for this new film as well.
Tumblr media
Blumhouse’s Halloween is a straight continuation from the 1978 original and it ignores all of the other sequels in the Halloween franchise. To some of the older fans of the series this may be very confusing but in a way this helps simplifies the plot of the film and makes it a much easier film to newcomers of the series to get familiar with. The movie takes place 40 years after Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was the sole survivor of Michael Meyer’s wrath on Halloween night. The new film now taking place in 2018 see’s Laurie Strode as a much older and hardened woman. She now has both a daughter and granddaughter who are very distant from her as the only thing that’s been on Laurie’s mind is Michael Meyer’s fateful return to Haddonfield and her chance to end the nightmare that’s been haunting her for the past 40 years.
Tumblr media
David Gordon Green’s new Halloween is a great sequel to the original while also being a great homage to the many different films in series. Green’s film does many of my favorite things that I liked about the original but gives it an updated feel that does an effective job. The iconic long takes from the original is here in this film and they are just as terrifying and entertaining as they were in the 70’s. The new film is a great sequel to the original and I could tell that McBride and Green were big fans of the original film as they honestly delivered on crafting a Halloween movie that should appease to the fans of the original but will attract newcomers to the franchise. Michael Meyers is older but just as terrifying and gruesome than he could ever be. The film doesn’t hold back on the many kills and does a good job on showcasing how evil of a monster Michael Meyer’s is. Jamie Lee Curtis performance as Laurie Strode was excellent. I really liked how her character’s past was the main backbone of the film and the aftermath from being stalked by a serial killer and losing her friends and how that has shaped her and what she must do to protect her family and everyone else from the pure evil that has returned to Haddonfield.
Tumblr media
John Carpenter’s score was also another highlight about the new film. The original movies score is one of my favorite movie scores of all time and I really thought he and his team outdid themselves in the film as hearing the updated iconic theme in the film brought a huge smile on my face. The score really delivered in the new film and its definitely the best since the original two films in the series. The new Halloween movie was an awesome sequel/update that delivered on the scares, and tension and brings an old horror legend back into the forefront with one of the best sequels in the series. The only gripe I have about the new film is the twist at the last act to the end which I thought felt came out of nowhere and could have been fleshed out more as I really didn’t see the point of it. Compared to Halloween H20’’s ending, I felt like the new film could have ended much stronger instead of feeling rushed. Overall Halloween is my favorite horror film that I’ve seen this year in theaters and I hope everyone enjoys the updated return of Michael Meyers who helped put the slasher genre on the map.

Venom Movie Review
Tumblr media
Had a chance to check out Sony’s Venom this past week starring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Scott Haze. The new film is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad). I can’t believe Venom is finally here as it seems like I’ve been seeing previews and interviews for it everywhere for the last year. The new film is set in its own stand-alone universe so any fans expecting to see the same familiar Venom origin that we’ve seen before in comics and animated series should know right now this is not the film. The story see’s notorious journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) gain superpowers after bonding with an alien symbiote species named Venom after attempting to uncover a plot by Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed). I went in to Venom with very low expectations as I was very curious to see how they would make this character work without mentioning Peter Parker. Fleischer’s Venom felt all over the place for me as I didn’t quite get the tone the film was shooting for. It was some parts it was a slapstick comedy but then would turn into a serious film. Also it felt like a lot of important scenes were cut or left out as characters’ motivations suddenly changed without any explanation. Also the main antagonist of the film was very generic and I couldn’t tell you what his motivation was as the film briefly rushes past any sort of explanation.
Tumblr media
Tom Hardy’s performance as Eddie Brock was great and did the best of what was given in the film. I wish there could have been a few more scenes showcasing the struggles Eddie goes through and his relationship with Venom was the highlight of the film for me. Their constant back and forth banter with each other was great. The rest of cast did the best in what they were given as Michelle Williams role as Eddie Brocks love interest was very generic and I didn’t think they gave her much to do in the film. Riz Ahmed did the best he could with his character but ultimately the main antagonist of the film Carlton Drake really had no sort of arc in the film and I really didn’t understand the motivation on some of his character’s actions. I wish the film would of did a much better job on fleshing the characters as really Eddie Brock/Venom was the only interesting character to me in the film.
Tumblr media
Ruben Fleischer’s Venom was a disappointing film for me as I really like the symbiote story arc and the character and I wish the film would of really did a better job on fleshing each of the characters out and not only Eddie Brock. There were scenes you can tell that were cut out as characters would suddenly make choices that I felt came out of nowhere without any explanation and the main antagonist was really weak to me, I thought they could of done better fleshing out his motives. All in all Venom wasn’t the worst comic book movie and there are some cool action scenes but overall I wish they would of given the character a better story and figured out the tone.
