not to be divisive or whatever, but 9x10 of supernatural is one of the most overt examples of sam's victimization at the volition of the narrative directly. being possessed by gadreel and crowley at the same time, finding out whatever agency he thought he had was just a loose illusion whipped up for him, even something as trivial as castiel burning his warding ink off - all of the diminutive changes to his own body sam woke up to. the fact that it's not even something of an aberration for him anymore. that is simply insane.
Except that… I need your help. And you're clearly not gonna stick around for much longer unless I give it to you straight, so… I've done a lot worse than you know. I've killed innocent people in the line of duty. But I'm pretty sure it's not something the old me could've done. And maybe I should feel guilty. But I don't.
dog dean afternoon is a failure of an episode but only because dean didn't try to hump sam's leg. he didn't even think about it. there's a motif of noncommittal storytelling with this show to say the least.
something i keep thinking about is who mary is to sam. she didn't raise him; he doesn't know her except through the stories john and dean told him. she exists in pictures and print, not in memories. she's a stranger to him, yet his entire life has revolved around her. he seeks revenge for a woman he's never met or known or loved. she's just a secondhand god to a nonbeliever, omnipresent but never actually there, never actually touched or held or shared. he's outside the church looking in on the mass but never able to partake. it must be alienating, for your family to have known god while you're left only to your own faith.

s12 and sam is lying awake in bed staring at the ceiling, thinking about how mary only ever knew him without demon blood, back when he was still pure, and wondering if that’s why she can’t love him now, cause she died on the night he was tainted and dean is still the four year old she left and that’s why they can text and play words with friends but sam isn’t that baby, can never be her baby, because her baby was 100% human and sam is just not
