Rose groaned as she heard Matthew’s familiar voice and turned on her side, flapping her hand aimlessly as an attempt to shoo him away. “Go away, Corner,” she mumbled, finally managing to find the boy’s face with her hand. She smushed his face away and used her other hand to rub at her eyes. A long yawn escaped her lips and Rose sighed before peeking her eyes open. “Happy now, Matthew?” 

“Yes.” Matt laughed. He leaned against the trunk of the tree. “I don’t blame you for sleeping out here, it’s a nice day.” He looked down at her lap where the book was. “What are you reading?” He asked

Rose watched him out of the corner of her eye and mimicked his movements, her head pressed against the tree trunk. She hoisted the book up in her hand and replied, “Jane Eyre. Lovely book, you know.”

"I've never heard of it." Matthew said, studying the cover. "What's it about?"

Her book resting on her thighs, Rose leaned her head back against the large oak tree. It was a nice, peaceful September day, the edge of the leaves barely turning a yellowish colour, only the start of their transition into such vibrant shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. Rose always viewed Autumn as beautiful, yes, but Winter was always her favourite. The light snowfall, the warm holiday welcomings when returning to home, Christmas cookies galore. Even so, Autumn was nice, Autumn was lovely, Autumn was just fine for only a few months long.

Reading outside was always a hobby of Rose’s; the soft lapping of the water against the shore and a slight breeze brought her at ease and made the time outside of the castle more enjoyable. She flipped idly through the coarse pages of her book before resting her head back on the rough bark, her eyes fluttering shut for only a few minutes. Only a few minutes of short sleep, she reminded herself, just a few, short minutes…

Matthew was going for a walk down to the lake when he saw Rose silently sleeping. He walked over and crouched down beside her. He picked up a leaf that had fallen on the ground and lightly poked her face with it. “Rooosee.” He said, smiling. “Wake up, Roseee.” He said. After a minute of doing that she still didn’t wake up. “Oi, Weasley. Wake up.” He shook her shoulder lightly.
