Removing the acrylic covering sheets and making the packaging at the book bindery.
The packaging did not have enough bleed on one of the cover edges so I had to use a slightly bigger print version which meant all of the corner edges were slightly off.
The time in the bindery took a while to get everything right but I learnt how to use paper drills to get curves and use adhesives and folding techniques. I also inserted magnets inaide the 3d printed box so they are concealed inside and also inside the cover page.
In future, I would have made a test version of the packaging first if I had time and then would adjust the flat-lay layout although I did get it pretty perfect by testing on mockups beforehand (I didn’t know the thickness of card being inserted inside the pages so needed to allow more for folds).

I ran out of time to finish off my motion animations for the hand in but I believe what I have submitted works well as a cohesive unit of collateral items.
The design system is applied professionally across all elements so they look as though they are part of the same family.
I will continue working on my motion graphics in the background for my portfolio.
Please note in my blog at the bottom of each page there is a button (Forwards) to navigate to the next page for that week.

With the laser cut pieces I applied a base layer of white acrylic paint and then used cardboard pieces to wipe the fluroescent green paint on top.
When the paint had dried the letters did not really fill properly so tomorrow I will try to spray paint some acrylic in the labs.

Today I went to level 7 of fashion design and Galina gave me a hand to sew the elastic pieces to the acrylic ones.
I also laser cut some more pieces to test the outcome if I spray paint the laser cut prints.

Laser cutting the tokens
I laser cut some felt and glued it to the transparent blue acrylic to give the design depth.
I also laser cut a phone shape to hold the phone band out of green acrylic with different depths so I can test putting white paint in the lettering.
Next I need to put acrylic paint inside the shape and bring it in tomorrow to Fashion on level 7 where they are going to help sew a few pieces for me.

Version 3 – Final Packaging Iteration
I printed version two and some of the patterns did not line up on the corners so I calculated the distance and did a few test prints in black and white to get them lined up.
Version two prototype also was exactly to scale for the size of the box but when I go into the bindery I want to put 3mm card in between the sides of the printing. Therefore I have accounted extra space in between folds so it folds precisely once stuck to the card and also to allow me to put magnets inside.
For consistency I have made the colours on the sides dark blue one long edge of the packaging represents traction and the other side represents distraction (the curvy distracting pattern that is almost an optical illusion).
I have also allowed for the height of the outside packaging designs to be longer so they can fold over the cardboard pieces and be sealed by the inner packaging prints.

Version 2 – Final Packaging Iterations
Here I tested muliple layouts to see which colours would make sense next to each other and where it made sense to place certain information. I also tested and experimented with patterns.
I decided to put the being present tips on the back of the packaging because it makes more sense to put the information about the opporunity cards inside the packaging where the opportunity cards will be sitting inside of. Therefore people will understand what to do with them and not miss the information.
The being present tips on the back people will find and remember that when they put their phone in the box they can flip it over for some tips about being present or just reminder to not engage digitally for a while.
I also printed these options to decide the best outcomes.

Version 1 – Final packaging iteration
Here I tested colour palettes for the packaging design and also pattern options for the inner box.
I also designed an inner base for the box which is based off of the motion animated posters.
What I learnt from this was that some of the dimensions were wrong. Although, I measured them precisely the boxes 3D shape meant some sides needed more length.

Prompt – Motion Animation
This took much longer than expected and is less impactful than I expected.

This process took several hours.
I morphed each point of each shape into the other shape of the alternate brand logo from Illustrator and in After Effects.
This process was very tedious but I used the same process for each letter to ensure the output was cohesive.
In retrospect this effect took far too long but it is very interesting and aligns very well with the brands design system (Soft and smooth shapes for distraction morphing into sharp and angular shapes for traction or focus).

An annoying part of the animation process is that I have to manually set the control points and animate each point of the shape from each frame to get a smooth transition.

Brand Development – Prompt
Here is a time-lapse of my iterative process fro brand identity design from sketch to finished output.
It took me quite a while to get all letters in the brand name to look balanced next to each other.
One particularly tricky part was getting the arrow proportions right as it needed to look like an arrow but also read as a capital T and it created a massive area of white space when next to the P before it.
It took me many iterations and I kept using the smooth and pen tools to perfect the shapes so that I can easily animate each character into the other. I also used ovals to design the curvy typeface and rectangles to design the angular tyoeface.
The concept behind the brand having two typefaces is so I can make them variable.
This will connect to the brands design system. The design system uses curvy warped shapes to emphasise distractions and hard angular shapes to emphasises traction, presence and focus.
Tomorrow I will animate the typeface so it can morph between curvy to sharp and angular. This reflects the brand experience that a person engaging with the campaign will go through. When they first see the motion animated billboard they will be open to distraction but the motion design will be used to show transformation to awareness of mind (present).
I think this is a strong concept. I will use motion design tomorrow to also flow into more informational displays from the logo itself. The O in both typefaces is shaped like an hourglass to reflect a loss of time associated with being distracted and this will support the brands key purpose and message which is to make people aware of how impactful their everyday distracted behaviour is on their lives. For example a daily screen time of 3 hours 30 mins results in 11.4 years spent looking at a screen in an 80 year timeframe. The arrow can also be animated as a way into content regarding traction.
The campaign aims to put things in perspective and promote a shift in state of mind which is reflected in a motion animated logo shifting from one state to another.
The motion graphic displays will also have sharp angular animated typography to reinforce positive mindsets on time (stoic quotes) and use wavy text to inform people about the impacts of not being present / being constantly distracted.

Today I refined the community 'opportunity card' tokens which will go inside the anti-distraction box.
The first iterations were all hexagon shapes (top left). This progressed into different shapes which appear through the brand identity and poster design system.
The second iteration had plain centred text but I decided that it looked to dull and boring and needed further extension of the brand through the flow of typography.
To do this I drew sharp angular lines with the pen tool and adjusted the type along the lines. The meaning of it is that the prompts on the cards such as "Plan a 30 minute catch up with a friend." is an activity where an individual must be present and not distracted in their device.
Anything in the brand system that is purposeful and allows a person to gain traction in their lives is designed with sharp angles. Anything related to distraction is curved using wavy text.
I think the application of this system across the collateral is really successful and the dynamicism of this idea across multiple contexts is helpful. I have already designed some looping and wavy motion graphics related to distraction and will soon animate some stoic quotes to represent traction and an awareness of mind / presence that a person must really focus on to stay present in a space.

The difference in finishes between laser cutting and screen printing.
I really like how the screen prints came out and they are also functional and won’t break when stretched.

Screenprinting the brand pattern onto neon elastic bands.
Sourcing the elastic was quite difficult I got them from the $2 shop as suspenders and trimmed them down to size.
I did not have high expectations for this process working but the end output is really well finished and looks great. I added extra shapes at each end of the pattern to account for the edges needing to be sewed over. .
