This is the shooting setup I used to photograph my book. I wanted to create some studio style lighting from home. I used a white sheet to diffuse the natural light coming from outside I then weighted my tripod and extended it from above and covered a cardboard box with a black sheet as a background.
I used a piece of white card to try and bounce some of the light at the base of the book and fill in the shadows so there was more of an even and balanced lighting tone.
I then set my camera to shoot in bursts of 3 on a timer and went through each page. I later applied colour edits in Lightroom and made a few fixups in Photoshop where necessary.

Removing the acrylic covering sheets and making the packaging at the book bindery.
The packaging did not have enough bleed on one of the cover edges so I had to use a slightly bigger print version which meant all of the corner edges were slightly off.
The time in the bindery took a while to get everything right but I learnt how to use paper drills to get curves and use adhesives and folding techniques. I also inserted magnets inaide the 3d printed box so they are concealed inside and also inside the cover page.
In future, I would have made a test version of the packaging first if I had time and then would adjust the flat-lay layout although I did get it pretty perfect by testing on mockups beforehand (I didn’t know the thickness of card being inserted inside the pages so needed to allow more for folds).

final product!
Finally finished my punk zine! Not going to lie, I really struggled with the punk aesthetic. My comfort zone is composed of grids, colour palettes and well proportioned imagery, so researching and creating this punk aesthetic really threw a spanner in the works in terms of the way that I design! I spent hours upon hours of looking through punk album covers, posters and zines, and while doing so became pretty accustomed to the way they talked and expressed things on the page. In the end, I kind of loved it. The freedom and mess is unlike any other design movement, and there was just so much to explore and experiment with. I was doing both manual and digital cutting and collaging, photocopying and scanning in random objects fro around my house, scribbling, gluing and doodling. It was a blast.
Some of the technical components trumped me for a while though; such as creating a coloured paper ‘background’ for some of my images (photoshop - solid colour layer - multiply overlay) which took WAY too long to figure out, as well as resizing and compressing a lot of the images. Just goes to show that in the chaos of punk you still can’t forget about those crucial things! Anyways. I have really enjoyed being a part of this class this semester. It has challenged me creatively, and I loved getting to know more about the history of design, especially from two legends of the industry who have so much knowledge on the subject. Here are a few pages from my final assignment:

Text Manipulation Workshop Activity
In class today we did a quick workshop activity that I found extremely useful; its aim was to focus on interesting ways to design layouts which will help us when making our zines . We were given a document with a photo and text and had to spend five minutes rearranging it to focus on the image. This five minute exercise was then done with the prompts of focusing on text, and distorting the layout.
I definitely could have expanded on my third experiment of the distortion, as I didn’t really distort or warp the design, more just arranged it in an unconventional manner.
The fact that we had such a strict and short time limit was really effective for me to play around with designs without any judgement, where I couldn’t be a perfectionist. This was better for getting out ideas in quick bursts. Such a short workshop like this really has helped me think about new ways I can approach the zine, and has opened my eyes to the power layouts can have in evoking different aesthetics.
It was also interesting seeing my classmates’ different approaches to each of the prompts, really showcasing the unlimited nature of design.
I think it is really easy to get wrapped up in one’s own design style and ways of approaching assignments, and that it is important to be able to take a step back and view design brief’s in a different light. Sometimes I forget that essentially design doesn’t have rules and that the best designs are the ones that go outside the box and subvert people’s natural beliefs of the “rules” of design.

Bellarke Fam Gratitude Day ♥ - #weektwelve
There is LOTS going on.
I recently won a really small category in a really small writing online non-official contest. But how HAPPY I am to win it! My writing heart just glows and glows. I love what I do.
I also happen to have purple hair now! Me and adventures, the best duo.
I’m grateful for being able to meet old and new people, to explore my passion and get surprised when I least expect it. I’m grateful for opportunity to study on university in less than a WEEK! I’m grateful that despite black clouds slowly creeping above me I can still find the light to guide me.
Be well, be kind.
(thank u @carrieeve @nvermindiseeyou @catastrophic-chloe @shaeheda @famousflowermagazine for the tag!)

The app *plays drumming rolling* here it is \o/

so ...our initial idea of the app failed including the roleplay video we did earlier. The feedback our lecturer gave us was that try to create part of the app that other apps do not have so that you can really have the ‘x’ factor.
so after doing some survey on google survey -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After doing a survey to ask our target audience, most of the feedbacks we got included the answer that they do not think they would feel a need to even visit a grocery store, because they find it a hassle to think of what to cook or am unsure of what to cook.
So we decide to “fix” this issue by creating this function in our app where it would allow the user to visit a grocery store, select the camera icon and it would show them a selection of recipes according to the choice of dietary, the time needed pax and difficulty.
We want to keep this app simple and friendly so that it wouldnot only appeal to our young target audience, but this would also be useful to anyone who simply just have to download our ‘Gordon Nose Best’ app.
so we completely changed our idea 360.

^ this was just an idea of the special part of our app.
^Here is a simple roleplay video of how this app would help!

Once we got all these stuff down - it’s left with creating the app on illustrator!

the end (for now)
This class has probably been my most challenging class this semester. It has pushed me to explore new techniques, try new things and work in ways that I am not really familiar with. One thing I do really appreciate, however, is the amount of work and effort that Andy, Karen and Bailey have put into our lectures and classes. Watching the weekly lectures and the depth and analysis that Andy and Karen do into the history and realms of design is so interesting and has really opened my mind up to different ways of thinking and seeing. It was definitely a huge influence on my decision to choose Punk Culture as my zine topic. Looking back, I wonder why I chose a topic that was so unfamiliar to me and difficult to replicate, but I think it was because the lectures had sparked a real curiosity to see what goes on behind the scenes of the famous design movements, and why these things look the way they do.
One thing that Andy said during a tutorial really resonated with me and stuck with me - design doesn’t just happen when we open our Adobe Suite. Design is in the materials we use, the way we think and we we express these processes. The potency of the different topics in the lectures are a key reminder of this. The projects and tasks we were assigned were not digital based - they were hands on. Use spaghetti to make words! Carve play-dough! Make a collage! Write a question out of objects! They all pushed me out of the comfort zone of my computer and into the real world, where creation began. In our classes together, Bailey asked tough questions to challenge us and encouraged class discussions. During one class when we looked at our collages we had made, she made a lot of comments that made me look at our designs in different ways. ‘The balance of colour in your collage really makes it engaging’, she said about mine, which I never would’ve thought about otherwise! In one of our last classes we had face to face, she got us to look at a poster and analyse what was wrong with it. Our usually quiet class all started picking apart the different components, thinking of new ways to order it and trying to look at the poster from the experience of a viewer. It was these little things that all helped me develop as a designer over this last semester. I will miss the challenges of these classes, but I know these skills will help me in the future.

Blog 012: Blog Ending
Final Week. This week we are so busy preparing for the fast approaching final pitching. We already got our product. There were some issues and errors with it but still we managed to overcome it during the final pitching. We also finished revising our pitch deck for the final pitching, even our BMC. Everything is good to go.
Pitch. So to end our journey with this this subject and with our product. We had our final pitching with the panels, representing our product. It was very nerve wrecking. Yes, we were prepared but we can’t neglect the fact that there might be some problems that will occur while we are pitching but fortunately it ended well for us. Hopefully, for everybody also.
It was a very rollercoaster ride with this journey. There were many ups and downs. We’ve been through some storms but in the ended we saw the sun with rainbows. It was an exciting ride. We learnt a lot. Everything we will be remembered. I hope no one regretted doing their product or from even going in this journey. It surely is a bittersweet goodbye. I’m glad it’s all done but i’ll be missing the feeling of doing something like this.
Until next time,
Rene Michael (technosearcherene) is signing off.
