Someone in my life always makes a comment like “good for her/him, that can’t be easy” when she sees a person over 130 pounds running or exercising, and this feels like something that I should be calling her out on but I wasn’t sure? ANON PLEASE

I would do the questioning-everything trick.  So here is a sample conversation of how that would look:

Them: “Good for him, that can’t be easy.”

You: “What ‘can’t be easy?’”

Them: “Running like that.”

You: “Why?”

Them: “Well, because they’re heavy.”

You: “Do you think running is harder for heavy people?”

Them: “Well.. uh, no, I just am trying to say they’re doing a good job getting in shape.”

You: “By saying running is harder for them than for skinny people?”

etc etc.  Just keep answering with a question that picks apart what they’re saying until the fatphobic core of it comes out.  You can add leading questions like “Do you think it’s smart to assume how difficult things are for people based on their body?” or “Do you see fat people as lesser in some way?”  Just pick it apart with questions, coolly and calmly.  Don’t let yourself come across as defensive or flustered.  They are the one having to defend their unnecessary statements, so let them make a fool of themselves.

Irrelevant. Sucks that racist assholes were trying to start shit, but by reacting you’re letting them win. Keep the protest peaceful and ignore the taunts. By bending to their antagonizing and turning to violence you’re just giving the camera something to discredit your message. People have the right to say stupid shit and be ignorant  in this country. Just bite the bullet and ignore them.  It’s certainly no excuse to burn your town down and completely obliterate the integrity of your message over a couple jerk-ass racists. Shes acting like just because the media didn't note the “otherside” taunting, that it was still somehow justifiable for the protesters to descend into an angry mob over. Verbal insults =/= physical retaliation and arson ever. Want people to respect you and your message? don’t resort to violence over words. Period.
