i’ve talked about this before but omg this is just so sick and twisted. darry reaching for soda is just so sad like he always acts strong in front of his brothers and even tho this is a moment where he’s breaking in front of soda, darry REACHING for soda and showing that he really needs his support in this moment is just heart breaking.

sure, steve and soda can be awful romantic sometimes, but they’re also the kinds of people who’ll lean in to the other to say something romantic just to burp in the other’s face or something. they’re two teenage guys at the end of the day, they’re not completely gushy

okay so i was thinking about this earlier and i need some opinions. is throwing in the towel a reference to suicide? i mean the whole song is about darry believing that he's not good enough and saying that he's ready to give up (aka, throwing in the towel) and then soda convincing him that he shouldn't give up

steve and soda steal glances at each other all the time

for confirmation, for comfort, to make sure the other’s still there, to make sure they're on the same page, to gain confidence, to know when to step back

and maybe it never goes beyond looks. maybe they never say anything to each other about it, about everything that lies underneath.

but even if it never rises to be explicit, they both now what's resting there, the underlying current that draws them to each other, and maybe just knowing it is enough.

i know i like just said that steve will wear his vest with nothing underneath to show off, but he’s super insecure about his back in specific. he has these long, ugly scars across his back where his dad used to belt him. he’d belt him until he was literally bleeding on the floor and unable to fight back. if he can help it, he won’t walk around without anything covering his back. that’s what he prefers his denim vest. he can still keep cool in the summer, but he also doesn’t have to show his back.

when the gang goes swimming, he sometimes sits to the side and just dips his legs into the lake. he knows the gang won’t judge, but the greasers don’t have private pools—they have the swimming hole or the lake. steve doesn’t wanna get asked about the scars on his back and shoulders. he goes in most of the time and just sticks close to soda to hide his back, but if there are fresher ones on his back, he won’t go in.

sodapop will sometimes wrap his arms around steve to cover his back because he knows steve hates the way his back looks he’s always there to console steve, but he understands that it’s not something steve can just get over. they’re working on it.

steve and soda have both definitely snapped at customers for the other. someone’s complaining that soda’s taking too long on the cash register? steve is down their throat in seconds. someone makes a rude comment about steve’s teeth or something? careful, cause soda’s gonna knock theirs out if they don’t shut up. they’re so overprotective with each other, it’s insane
