He had brought out the man in Alec, and now it was Alec's turn to bring out the hero in him. He knew what the call was, and what his answer must be. They must live outside class, without relations or money; they must work and stick to each other till death. But England be­longed to them. That, besides companionship, was their reward. Her air and sky were theirs, not the timorous millions' who own stuffy little boxes, but never their own souls.

I was sitting behind Ismail, I think. And when the credits rolled, and I just saw his shoulders doing that, and Ismail just, was tears rolling down his face, he turned round to me and went, "it's so beautiful, god!" But it was entirely genuine, this is a, you know, this is a man who wore his heart on his sleeve, and at that point, I went, "oh, this is not the big bad wolf," and he was immensely generous to me, and I became very, very, very fond of him."
