Honestly what we know so far about Comfrey's "descent into madness" I think could be seen as a metaphor for lots of things irl (science, invention, journalism, technology) that people pursue with wide eyed idealism until the realities of capitalism and actually funding those endeavors inevitably erodes your moral integrity as youre forced to continuously capitulate to the interests of your sponsors. I don't think Comfrey is "evil." I think she's a person who believed in adventure and her mission so deeply that she kept telling herself that the ends justify the means. Until one day she looked around and she had no one left to share the spoils with.

oh also i'm not sure it's likely but i had the thought and wanted to throw it out there:

we keep learning more about how much travel is happening between worlds, and how it didn't used to be this way, and about the potential destabilization of the relationship between zood, zern, and gath, and i'm starting to wonder if ludmilla is maybe trapped between worlds? like, each type of energy seems to correspond with a biangle and with a realm. so maybe ludmilla's lack of identifiable energy means that she's nowhere at all.

ough so much good stuff in the latest episode.. pappy and olethra's conversation made me want to cry.

also I haven't seen anyone talking about torse and maxwell's conversation "joy doesn't seem to come easy to you either" , but that felt real significant to both maxwell's character as well as he seems to be connecting to torse in a way that he hasn't been able to connect with anyone else on the crew?

I wonder if max is just entirely unphased by his "meat grinder" moment last episode or if he will need to deal with that emotionally at any point?

I think there is something to be said about the clear lack of care for her own safety and dismissal of her own pain Marya keeps showing.

This is a woman who went through such a traumatic and tragic experience that she refused for years to come back to the thing she loved most, who spiralled into self doubt and self loathing until she was presented with the chance of getting revenge.

At the end of the day she did not join to save Comfrey, she joined to kill straka or die trying clearly.

She throws herself into danger with little care, and she is tough, she insanely smart and capable, but she throws herself into wells at the mere possibility of facing her worst nightmare, she gets choked and thrown against a wall and doesn't stop for one second on her own pain or safety because it's better that way, she was being somewhat controlled, it doesn't matter that it's still a painful and traumatic experience.

She hears that the woman who she probably admired more than anything and who opened the doors to the sky to her is clearly involved in her worst moment and she pushes it down because there is no space for her pain and resentment when others are still conflicted about her.

She is alone and she silently scratches her tattoo off. This woman grabbed a knife most probably and either stabbed herself or skinned herself to get rid of something that once represented her pride and joy.

Marya is not well and we barely scratched the surface of the weight she is carrying. I fear she is gonna break at some point and it won't be pretty.

I understand why the implication that Comfrey and Van had something romantic and/or sexual happen in the past along with Van describing their relationship as "parental" might make some people uncomfortable. Totally reasonable. But I personally find it delicious the way that Van said "parental" and then hesitated, almost catching her breath as she realized how confusing the dynamic must have been. I think it's fascinating to see in a group where giant age gap relationships seem pretty commonplace, where of course there'd be some weird gray areas and shifting dynamics and boundary issues. When you're flitting through the sky caught up in the whimsy of adventure and the rules of polite society don't even cross your mind as dalliances between mentors and mentees, parental figures and team members alike can occur.
