One of the funniest scenes in Ben (1972) to think about from the rat's perspective is the Marionette Show the kid character performs for him - having made a cute little rat marionette that Ben, being extremely intelligent, would probably recognize as a facsimile of a member of his species. Imagine? Your new very powerful friend (though you can tell he's a youngling for his species... what you don't know is that he's already lived several of your people's lifetimes), with abilities/technology beyond your comprehension, has made a replica of you (which is not a practice your own culture ever engages in). Now he keeps dancing it around for your entertainment and his.

Permanent Starter Call

While Ben's species, inability to talk, etc do make him inevitably a crack-y muse, I do want to make sure people know that I'm not going for "evil rat". In the original film, at least, I don't see Ben as evil.

His colony befriends a creature far larger and more powerful than themselves, and of a species that often hates Ben's kind. Willard did almost kill them all before deciding to spare the mischief out of pity.

They came to trust him with all of their lives... and he let Socrates (a rat '71 Ben regards as his best friend) get brutally killed by another human while Ben himself could do nothing but hide in terror, lest he also be killed.

Willard taught them they could avenge their friends, though... then promptly tried to murder them all for acting under his guidance. He did kill a vast number of them before Ben, recognizing the scent of poison, intervened. By the end of the movie, Ben, not fully aware of human motivations, sees most as either indifferent at best, or outright capricious and cruel at worst.

He just hasn't realized, by the time of the sequel, how few human deaths it would take to start a war that would lead to even greater efforts towards the mass slaughter of his kind than humans already engage in every day.

Be consistently kind to him, and he can be the best weirdly intelligent (and way more vocal than usual) pet rat for a humanoid muse.

The Last Man

Clara -- Lionel Verney's niece and adoptive daughter. CHILD MUSE. (around 12.) Good-natured, deeply religious; being forced by dire circumstances to grow up too fast, despite her family's desperate attempts to enable her to have as normal a childhood as possible. Already inclined to be a workaholic, almost, to the extent that she's permitted to be.

Willard (1971) & Ben (1972)

Ben -- He's extremely intelligent for his species, but still essentially a normal rat. Not evil - just understandably very wary of humans once he's betrayed by someone he thought was Friend. Not dangerous to any human... until he has about 500 other members of his colony with him. Then again, he'll soon realize the consequences daring to harm them will have for every other rat he's ever cared about. [Concept in play: cosmic horror from a half-rung down.]

Disney's The Black Hole

Kate McCrae – Astronaut with an ESP (External Sensory Processing) chip implanted in her brain that allows wordless communication with any AI equipped with a corresponding chip, and may possibly even carry over, to a lesser extent, to those without one.  Few really know how this conveys thoughts from one being to another, but the humans that navigate the technology best tend to have strong affection for robots in a world that tends to consider them ‘mere machines’. Canonically, the film’s survivors get pulled through a black hole at the end of the movie, so there’s a handy starting point for crossovers.
