Did S4 E1 show Mike gay panicking????!? I haven’t seen any discussion of this scene and I wanted to talk about it because ??? Disclaimer; I have a full face of clown makeup on and I just read the Byler masterdoc so naturally I’m reading too much into everything. At the same time I will not take criticism and this is rock-solid Byler proof.

Just for context, this is when Mike and Dustin are trying to recruit somebody to play D&D since Lucas had the championship game. He is trying to get Nancy to play.

The abrupt stop after he bursts through the door yelling Nancy’s name. Why was he so surprised upon entering? Did he not expect to see so many people??? He knew where to find Nancy, so we can assume he has been in the editor’s room before. He slowly starts looking around the room after seeming shocked for a second.

The next shot is Mike’s POV, of a male student looking at him almost.. intently? He looks very earnest, albeit a little bit confused, and his posture reminds me of Will. I know, I know, that is a REACH let me live.

The shot switches back to Mike, whose eyes linger for a split second. Then his gaze sweeps over the room to the opposite side (somehow missing Nancy who is standing in center of the room, glaring at him. How did her brightly colored outfit not catch his eye?)

The shot switches to Mike’s POV, showing us how he glances right past Nancy to a desk near her, where two students are sitting and looking up at him. A male student is in the foreground of this shot and is scowling at Mike. He looks almost disgusted? That may be too strong of a word. He really just looks annoyed. He is notably wearing a yellow-ish jacket (blue meets yellow in the west????!!?!). The second student at the desk is a girl I think, but she also is wearing yellow and her hair looks similar to Will’s (it’s not a bowl-cut but the general shape is there).

The shot goes back to Mike. We see that random male student #2 is also subjected to Mike’s lingering eyes. FINALLY, Mike’s eyes move to the right, then up and he finds Nancy!!

Why the focus on the random male students? Why is Mike so confused upon seeing them? Were they what distracted him from seeing Nancy who was STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM IN HIS DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT?? Did Mike get sidetracked because he made eye contact with not one, but two boys who may or may not have reminded him of his best friend with whom he is secretly in love????? I need answers. I know this is so dumb but I can’t get over it. It seems very intentional. Maybe the intent was to paint Mike as annoying or abrasive, or maybe as someone who is like socially inept? But there are other ways to do that without implying gay panic. That’s how I read this scene but I know I am delusional. July 1st needs to come sooner because I am unwell.
