“That is why no news organization, despite being grateful for the readership from Facebook, wants to become too dependent on the network, or give up its own relationship with readers. Just as tech companies have viewed one another as both friends and competitors, news organizations now view Facebook the same way.”
This article form the New York Times gives great insight into new changes in media, and the strive in the industry to embody several services in one.

This podcast is long, but it exemplifies a text that gives insight into an industry. I found the processes discussed by Stephen Colbert, regarding producing his show, to be very revealing and interesting.

This is an older article from the Washington post, but I thought it remains a relevant discussion of the news parody genre as a whole. Discussions of the influence media plays in political action often focuses on decisions in the voting booth; the implication that public opinion has influence beyond election day is very supportable.
“Studies consistently find that people who watch “The Daily Show” are far more knowledgeable about political affairs than the average TV viewer. There is some dispute over causality: whether watching the program helps one become well-informed, or whether the already well-informed are the people most attracted to the show. Nonetheless, it provides a home for those seeking political interest and engagement.”
I believe this quote points out an interesting mix up many make between correlation and causation. Whether political satire is more informative than traditional news can not be determined based upon these facts alone.

“Whereas Bruce tends to express traits that can typically be approached as feminine, Alison admits that she has been “a connoisseur of masculinity” (95) since she was a child. Thus, even though their share many similarities, their divergence in terms of their gender alignment creates significant tension between the two characters.”
The analysis in this article was interesting, and made productive points regarding the influence of traditional gender definitions on this family’s relationship in the graphic novel Fun Home.

This page from the graphic novel Fun Home demonstrates a characteristic of the entire novel. The illustrations are notable for their use of color to present a tone. Bright colors are not present; rather the illustrator has used grays and blues. This indicates the serious nature of the text.

Another Wonder Woman trailer with clearly better, well known actors? Interesting to see different story lines and the potential of a different company making the same film.

Thought this video was cool, because the girl Stacy talks about how she feels as a comic fan in regards to diversity in comics. She touches on gender and race issues within comics. It’s interesting to hear from a woman’s stand point.

I have seen many articles on this campaign and I think its great! Most women do not look like the women in magazines. Even thinner women do not look like that. The depiction for what these companies think is considered real relies on the ideologies set forth by pop culture. It’s a breath of fresh air to see something new.

Meet Alda, the group of plus-size models dedicated to helping each other and fixing fashion
A new shoot in the May 2015 issue of Glamour Iceland spotlights the models of Alda, a professional collective formed by the top plus-size models in the industry. Kicked off in 2014, the models of Alda have been helping each other gain leverage in an industry that’s overlooked them for so long — and succeeding.

Ok, this does not relate directly to what we’ve been discussing most recently, but it still relates to the time we’ve spent discussing representations of race in the media. I think it is so important and powerful to share these positive and empowering images with young children so that all children understand they can and should be represented.

This NPR article is everything! This new show that aired on Netflix called Grace and Frankie, take a look at two women who are forcefully brought together, because their husband admit they have been inlove with each other for years. Netflix is seriously paving the way for some controversial relationships. First Orange is The New Black, now this. This show highlights women in their early 50's as the leading roles, then they explore the life of two gay men taking advantage of the new same sex marriage law. This show is something I look forward to watching and hope changes the television dynamic of pop culture today.

Not only are women underrepresented but Asian Americans also. If they do get a leading role, it's to fit the stereotype in which they live in. Such as doctors, scientists, straight A students amd minorities in a city setting, etc. While these aren't the worst possible depictions it's still leaves a message to people watching these shows that this is what Asian culture stands for.

A really cool web series brought to you by PBS about gender and sexuality. This show explores the queer spectrum and all of its different intersectionalities across the spectrum.

In light of the recent criticism that Marvel has faced for its portrayal of female superheroes, an interesting exchange between a Marvel CEO and a Sony executive has been found in the previously leaked Sony emails. In the message, the Sony executive lists examples of female superhero movies that have been a “disaster.” Though the full context of the email is unknown, fans have been quick to remind everyone that plenty of male superhero movies have failed too (i.e. Green Lantern, Green Hornet, and Daredevil).
