Come see Measure for Measure to support your local theatre students! All proceeds of this show go towards the MCVTS School of the Arts, and the expansion of young minds.
MCVTS Theatre program at the East Brunswick Vocational and Technical school present Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, directed by Maria Aladren. The show will be held on March 19-21 and 26-28 at 7 PM at the East Brunswick Vocational and Technical School Auditorium, 112 Rues Lane, East Brunswick. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased by contacting [email protected] or going to http://bpt.me/1348626, $15 for adults and $5 for students. Teachers and administrators K-college are free. Tickets at the door are $17 for adults and $7 for students. Free parking at the venue.
Students in the program are thrilled to explore the world of Shakespeare.  This play--considered one of Shakespeare’s problem plays--presents a wonderful challenge for young actors.  The play deals with issues of hypocrisy, religious fervor, politics, and the abuse of power.  In Measure for Measure, Shakespeare sends a benign (but clueless) ruler, Duke Vincentio, into a quest to find out the true nature of her domain by giving her power to Angelo, her most law-abiding advisor, and disguising herself as a friar to observe the consequences.  Hilarity, betrayal, confusion and death ensue.  Angelo decides to rule with an iron fist until a young soon-to-be nun becomes his undoing.
For this production, director Maria Aladren has decided to set this world in the sophisticated glamour of a 1930’s Vienna, just before the Nazi invasion. The duke has become a duchess, and the joie-de-vivre of the Art Deco movement permeates the set and costumes.
“Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall”, the duchess’ right-hand woman says. And students in the program are challenged to find the dark humor in the all-too-human foibles of morality and law.
“When I first thought about Shakespeare I would picture Victorian era styles. But now I know what they don’t always teach in class, that Shakespeare is more relevant than I would have originally thought. Hypocrisy is something I don’t like now, so think about it in the context of this play. Heads roll, fights break out, people are tattooed, and go undercover like spies.“
“If I try to explain this show to you it might just sound like a Shakespearean tragedy, but its a comedy. And thats where the fun begins. All I have to say is Shakespeare is one clever dude.
“The Grand Budapest hotel man. A Shakespeare Grand Budapest inspired hypocritical show.”
In the MCVTS Theatre conservatory, young artists pursue their love of acting, playwriting, and  technical production; providing a practical and theoretical foundation for students seeking excellence in the performing arts.

Few other subjects raise more controversy and diverse opinions than the state of education in the USA. Yet no other topic is more relevant to students currently in the educational system. For the past few months, MCVTS Theatre students have taken upon themselves to explore, investigate, and express their views on their experience of the process of education. The final result of their work, The Education Project--a totally original, collaborative play--will premiere May 22, 23, 24 at 7 PM at the East Brunswick Tech Auditorium. For tickets email [email protected] or go to TheEducationProject.bpt.me. Tickets are $15 for general public ($17 at the door) and $5 ($7 at door) for students K through college. All teachers and administrators free of charge.
