Prior to the introduction of the vaccine in 1995, there were around 4 million cases per year in the United States. Ten years after the vaccine was recommended in the US, the CDC reported as much as a 90% drop in chickenpox cases. One dose of the vaccine prevents 95% of moderate disease and 100% of severe disease.

Measles meets its match
In 1958, there were 763,094 cases of measles in the United States. In 2008, there were 64 suspected cases of measles thanks to immunization from vaccines.

Polio loses its punch
Jonas Salk introduces the Salk vaccine, or inactivated poliovirus vaccine, to the world. With two doses of the vaccine, 90% or more of individuals develop protective antibody to all three serotypes of polio, and at least 99% are immune to polio following three doses.

Celebration Camping Month June 2021
The suns up, the birds are singing, and the mosquitoes are finally hatching from their larval phase. Ok, it isn 19t all rainbows and fresh fish, but June is Camping Month, and it 19s a great opportunity to get outside with the family and enjoy the great outdoors.
Research shows that people who spend time camping are happier, more relaxed, and tend to buy more bug repellant. What? We don 19t like mosquitoes anymore than you do, but we do love camping! History of Camping Month
While there was a time when 18camping 19 was just called 18being alive 19, that all changed in the 1800 19s when a man named Thomas Hiram Holding began to popularize the idea of recreational camping. Camping was a part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail, and once he had settled it turned into a passion he pursued and introduced to others. Once camping in general had become popularized, Thomas went on to introduce the idea of Cycle Camping to the American world.
This is, quite simply, where you load up on a bike and ride until you find a spot to camp, get up the next day, and do it all over again.
What is likely the first commercial campground opened in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1894 and was called Cunningham 19s Camp. From this point in history all sorts of new types of camping came into existence, from mere weekend family getaways, to RV camping, and everything in between.
Whether rafting down a river in a Canoe and setting up camp in the evening, or hiking into the woods far from civilization with a backpack full of your gear, Camping Month celebrates them all.
How to celebrate Camping Month
Well this has got to be the easiest answer ever, GO CAMPING. Even if it 19s just a pop-up tent and sleeping bag in your backyard under the stars, get out there and reconnect with the great outdoors. There 19s a place to find your soul and set your mind to peace out in the great distant woods, and they 19re calling all of us to head back out there and find ourselves.

Celebration Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month May 2021
Like many syndromes and disorders, they 19re hard to prevent, difficult to diagnose at an early age, and generally have no cure. Prader-Willi Syndrome is one of those disorders. Because it can happen in any family, it affects about one in 12,000 to 15,000 people each year in the United States alone. Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month is a holiday dedicated to informing people about this condition to help families out there in need of answers.
History of Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month
Prader Willi Syndrome was discovered and first diagnosed in 1956 by Swiss doctors Andrea Prader, Alexis Labhart, and Heinrich Willi. After they observed nine children with common characteristics, such as small hands and feet, weak muscles from birth, intellectual disabilities, on-set childhood obesity, and constant hunger, they were able to determine that thee symptoms were caused by a disorder that wasn 19t named yet. Today, doctors can determine this syndrome through genetic testing, as they have now found that this syndrome is caused by an abnormality of chromosome 15, which results in the dysfunction of the hypothalamus, or the part of the brain that controls functions such as hunger, emotions, fertility, and body temperature.
Prader-Willi is part of a spectrum, similar to Autism and ADHD, which means infants and children could have a varying degree of symptoms and be misdiagnosed as a result. As more research became relevant, the holiday itself began to form. In 2009, representatives Ed Royce and Jane Harman introduced the holiday to the House of Representatives in the United States. From there, it passed as an official month-long holiday to be observed. Organizations such as the Foundation for Prader-Willi research and the Prader Willi Syndrome Association now sponsor the holiday as one of their main events for fundraisers and contests, where the money collected will go towards research to help families manage and treat the disorder.
How to celebrate Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month
If you feel strongly about this cause, one of the best places to go for resources and information is to visit websites for organizations such as the Prader Willi Syndrome Association or the Foundation for Prader-Willi research and donate money towards their cause.
