🔵 Day 23 - Favourite Gaming Memory:

My Dad playing Sonic Spinball

This might seem strange to have such an important memory attached to a game that's not exactly recognised as a world beater but bare with me.

When we were kids one of the things I remember most was coming home from school or spending evenings watch or playing on the MegaDrive with my dad, my first memory of this was him playing #castleofillusion but the most prominant was with this game.

In one of my previous posts I mentioned the gaming magazine #SegaXS and it was using that magazines level layouts my dad was able to get to the very last level of the game, which if you've ever played Spinball, is no easy feat.

He did this because we were sad that we would probably never see the last level. So, while were asleep my dad played all night got to the last level and then left the game running so when we came down in the morning we could see it and play it.

To this day its the only time I've ever seen the last level of the game, and he did that for us.

🔵🎁Happy 29th birthday to everyones favorite blue hedgehog Sonic!

I can't believe it's been 29 year... I remember when you were new! Wow I feel old! When ever I think of gaming, the first thing that pops into my head is the opening music of Green Hill Zone. I love this game, the music, the level design, its childhood nostalgia in cartridge form.

🟢 Day 22 - Favourite Retro Gaming Magazine: SEGA XS #30daysofgaming

Growing up and even now there are some great videogame magazines out there, but for me growing up my Favorite of all was #SegaXS

Full Level walkthrough with full length screenshots of whole levels, something I've only ever seen in this magazine, so you could see everything that's was ahead to be able to plan your strategy.

Reviews for the #SEGA systems of the time, including in this issue the first review for a little game called Sonic CD!

And of course a full list of new and classic cheats for Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear and Mega CD!

A classic magazine and something I still look at and use today!

Lovely surprise arrived in the mail today from @limitedrungames, #realmyst by @cyanworlds.

I played the original many years ago upon release (yes I know, I'm old) and as soon as this became available for preorder I had to get it for the collection. I've never got anything from Limited Run Games before but as you can see from the photos the quality and presentation is very good indeed. The Shiney collectors card is a lovely touch and it even has a manual, a rarity these days... I've been meaning to do this forever but finally I put down an order for the Analogue Mega SG!

The Mega-Drive (or Genesis for my American peeps) is a very important console in my life, I still have all of my original games from childhood (and more now besides). I can still use my original hardware but moving forward this will allow my to have these games back in my living room and not in an old tv upstairs.

🟢 Day 21 - Currently Pre-Ordered: Animal Crossing: New Horizons realMYST (@limitedrungames) #30daysofgaming

So theres a few games I am looking forward to, upcoming on March 20th is Animal Crossing: New Horizons which is more than just a game, it's a lifestyle! And given what's going on in the world right now I can't think of any other game I'd rather be locked indoors with.

Next up is realMYST which is being released by the amazing folks over at #limitedrungames, it's currently available for preorder and ships in the 2nd or 3rd Quarter of 2020. I love Myst, I had it back on my old windows 95 pc back in the day, can't wait to make this a part of my collection.

🔴 Day 20 - Strangest Console: Nokia N-Gage #30daysofgaming

I mean... look at it... what were they thinking... and why did I buy it... To be fair, it actually did play somewhat well for it's time but as a functional phone... no.. just no. Since I've just moved into my new home Tony Hawk was the only game I could find and couldn't charge it because I've no idea which box the charger is in. Will come back to this at some point because I know the universe is begging for an N-Gage review 😅

🟡 Day 19 - My Rarest Game: Legend of Dragoon Press Kit (PAL) #30daysofgaming

While I'm luck to be in a position to have a few very rare games in my collection, the rarest by far is this Legend of Dragoon Press Kit for the PS1. While other titles I've been able to value due to other people selling them, I've never come across anyone selling this version, in fact I know of only 1 other person who has been able to verify they actually own one.

By the nature of it being a press kit it comes with a "press disc" that contains promotional imagery, character art, logos etc that would be used by magazine editors in reviews. While the discs have the finished art work on them the CD case itself does not as they were not complete by the time these were sent out, instead the discs are stored in this textured green/gold box with an embossed logo on the front.

From the information I've been able to gather there were between 20-30 of these made to be send out to various magazine/review outlets in the UK, but other than that, theres very little info out there on these so if anyone has more information or if you even have one yourself, let me know!

🔵 Day 18 - Favourite Gaming Book: Half Life 2: Raising the Bar #30daysofgaming

You would think all these years after the release of Half Life 2 this book would be here for nostalgia at best but no, this book is just important now as it was when it was released. Covering not just the development of the game, it goes into depth on the thought processes at every stage of design, from environment, characters, sound and story. While the games industry has moved on in terms of graphical power and styles, the development stages of how games are made largely remain the same. This is a bible if you are getting into game development like I was a few years ago and theres a reason why this book is still highly sought after.

A fantastic read and a important in depth look into one of the greatest games of all time.

🟢 Day 17 - Favourite 3rd Party System: RETROFLAG GPi Case #30daysofgaming

There are many 3rd party consoles to choose from these days that cover a wide variety of systems and functions but at the moment my current favourite is the RETROFLAG GPi case, a Raspberry Pi-W based system that takes on the appearance of the original DMG GameBoy.

This little thing is about two thirds the size of a regular gameboy but still retains the same feel, buttons have the same silicone membranes so don't feel "clicky". While it can of course play gameboy games via roms, that is just a small part what the GPI can do, NES, Snes, GameGear, MegaDrive, Mega CD, PlayStation and even more besides. There is a lot you can do with the GPi not to mention a great support community that has built around it too, theres a lot more I'd like to discuss but I'll come back to this another time. For now I'll just say, if you were on the fence about getting one, I highly recommend the GPi and you won't be disappointed.

🔴 Day 16 - Most Played Game: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim #30daysofgaming

Disregarding Tetris, the game I've probably played the most 1 way or another is Skyrim. It's just one of those games you can just pick up and play, even after time away from it. The freedom to explore where you like, play how you like and make a character however you see fit is just a small part why I keep coming back all this time later even over various systems.

The portability of the new switch version means I will never have a burning Train, Bus or Plane journey again and playing Skyrim VR on the PSVR was a total game changer to me. For years you see this big world in video games but you are always looking through a window that is your TV or monitor.

Playing this almost 10 year old game in VR broke that barrier, I was there, in Skyrim, looking up at that different sky, looking around me at actual dragons. It's insane.

🟡 Day 15 - Favourite Retro Console: Sega Mega-Drive #30daysofgaming

As a rule of thumb with retro games who grew up during the 16-bit Era, you were either a Nintendo player or a Sega player... I was a Sega boy through and through.

I remember my dad coming home with this console, a Japanese Mega Drive 1 back when these things went even out in Europe, I to this day have no idea how he got hold of the damn thing but it still has a pride of place in my collection.

I can still picture turning this on for the first time, a copy of Sonic 1 slots in and seeing all that colour and music, it is forever etched in my brain. Later we got hold of copies of games as they were released over here, Castle of Illusion, Bonanza Bros., ESWAT, Revenge of Shinobi I could go on, but I loved this console, I loved seeing my dad sit down and play with us or even just in his own time, so many memories and all of them precious.

Because of this I never really got into Nintendo "home consoles" until the #Gamecube, and even to this day because I grew up with a gameboy for portable and megadeive as console, nintendo is still in my head portable gaming first, not console. The only thing that's broken that in the modern day is the Switch lite since it's both home console power in a portable.

Anyways, memories are very important to me, especially ones including my dad since he is no longer with us, and the Mega Drive is more to me than just the nostalgia of playing games, its Memories of my dad, my brother and me, helping each other through levels, willing our dad on during the hard bits and sharing in his small victories.

I love you Mega-Drive. ❤

🔵 Day 14 - Favourite Cover Art: Broken Sword 1 & 2 (PS1) #30daysofgaming

I've always lovely great story based games and just art in general, when these cartoon style point and click adventure games came out I was instantly sold.

The covers to these games don't show off any of the characters or locations but give enough of a flavour of what adventure awaits.

The cover to the first game is dark and mysterious of symbolism hidden throughout while the 2nd cover has a more ancient Aztec feel. The covers just stand out to me and have always stuck with me, just the look, the tone, the colours and symbolism all do such and amazing job of selling what's inside with giving too much away.

🟢 Day 13 - A game you recommend playing: Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (NDS) #30daysofgaming

Hotel Dusk is a fantastically deep crime/mystery story set in the U.S. around the late 70s as you follow for New York cop Kyle Hyde as he arrives at the Hotel Dusk and seemingly stumbles onto something that can unlock a secret from his past.

The gameplay style is somewhat unique in the you have to hold the DS sideways like a book while playing and along with the rotoscoped hand drawn animation style you really feel like you are playing with an interactive book.

The story has many branching paths with your decisions and how you talk to the people around you affecting the final outcome as there are multiple endings depending on how good your detective skills are to uncover the mysteries inside the titular hotel.

I highly recommend people pick this one up.
