The Educator's guide to all things 3D Printing
We've been dealing with 3D printing and educational institutions (mostly in Singapore) since 2013 and we've learnt a few things along the way. Most concerns from educators are similar and all are very valid.

5 major benefits of 3D printing in education
There are a few considerations before you start:
What are the objectives of "getting" a 3D printer?
Who will be the main users of the 3D printer? - Students, Teachers or technical staff?
Budget
Location and position of the 3D Printer
A few considerations when choosing a 3D printer/vendor:
Ease of use of 3D printer and associated slicing software (more information on this below) - Check on levelling procedures and material loading/unloading procedures
Quality of prints - Are you able to get good prints with very little intervention or is the printer more technical and you need to be available to mess with settings?
Warranty and after-sales service - This is incredibly important, things will go wrong and you don't want to be left in a bad situation. Most warranties will not cover nozzle clogs, find out how much these will cost to remedy
Is the 3D printer able to use third-party materials? What are the materials used and tested on the 3D printer being considered?

The 3D Printing Process
The 3D Printing Process consists of 4 main steps.
Design -> Slicing -> 3D Printing -> Finishing
1. Design
You can either choose to design the products on your own or you could download models from the internet. Sites such as Thingiverse and Myminifactory provide users access to many files from various different interests, there is something for everyone. A good introduction would be to get students to explore and download models of interest to them from these sites.
2. Slicing
You would have to convert these 3D Designs (or CAD files, which should be in either STL or OBJ formats) into codes that your 3D printer will be able to understand. Slicing Softwares are particular to each 3D printer. Flashforge models available on our store use Flashprint. At this point, you would have to decide on the orientation of the print to minimise print time and supports (supports are like scaffolding, because 3D Printing is a layer on layer additive technology, you can't build layer 2 with layer 1 for support. Supports act as a bottom layer for top layers to be built on).
3. 3D Printing
Level your build plate -> Load Filaments -> Send the sliced files (from step 2 above). Make sure to watch the first (or first few layers of print) to ensure that the layers are sticking to the build plate and that they are sticking to each other. This is important. After which, you can leave the 3D printer to churn on it's own. Make sure to check back once in a while, you never know what problems can arise.
4. Finishing
Most of the time you would be doing basic clean-up like breaking off supports and cutting off any stray bits of filaments. You could also sand, spray paint or manually paint your 3D prints. Depending on materials you are working with, you would have to use different paints. But typically, acrylic spray paints work well.
Design Software for schools
There are a few design softwares that have been made specially for educational institutions.
1. Autodesk Fusion 360 - Free for educators and educational institutions. Plenty of free tutorials linked directly from the software and also on Youtube and a great community of creators online who are always happy to help. Most commonly used nowadays by design and engineering firms.
2. Makers Empire - Claimed to be one of the world's easiest-to-use 3D Design Software, it's specifically designed and suited for schools and educational institutions. They even have a monthly design competition that users can take part in to test their skills. One of the best choice for 3D Printing in Schools.
3. TinkerCAD - One of the early pioneers of 3D Design Software for Kids, it is also an offering from Autodesk. Simple easy-to-use interface and functions make this software great. It's also powerful- there have been many stories of designers using TinkerCAD to create professional/consumer products for sale.
Activities with students
As mentioned before, you can get students to explore and download their own models from sites such as Thingiverse and Myminifactory, or you can get them to design their own objects. An alternative is to get them to use generative design systems such as the Cell Cycle App from Nervous System. This helps students understand certain basic concepts with design and manipulation of models. It might even give them ideas about creating their own custom designs.

10 materials you can 3D Print with at home
Since it's emergence in the 1980s, 3D printing has grown from an industrial technology that was the domain of million dollar companies to a desktop technology that we can use in the comforts of our home and office. Together, there has been a lot of advances in materials engineering. Traditionally, desktop 3D printing was restricted to ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) but now there are more than 12 different types of materials you can use and explore at home.

PLA
Polylactic acid is a versatile and low-cost 3D printing material. Due to its accuracy and ease of use, it is the widely accepted standard for 3D printing materials.
3D prints made with PLA are rigid and strong. PLA has been used to fabricate everything from decorative items to functional products for use in form and fit testing applications.
PLA is a bio-degradable polymer created from processing plant parts. It is considered more “Earth- friendly” than any other 3D Printing material.
PLA is available in about 60 different colors.

PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate)
PET is one of the most commonly used plastics worldwide. It is a strong and tough material that can withstand higher temperatures than other 3D printing materials.
PET is available in a range of colors with varying translucency. Its glossiness and translucency can be manipulated to produce 3D prints with finish similar to glass.
PET is ideal for end-use and functional products including moving parts. It is one of the safest filaments to use for children’s toys and any part that would need to be in contact with food or drink (ensure your extruder is food-safe too).

Dissolvable Filaments (HIPS and PVA)
HIPS and PVA are two different types of dissolvable filaments commonly used to 3D print support structures. Using dissolvable filaments makes removal of support structures easy and less time consuming. Using dissolvable filaments also helps to create intricate shapes which would otherwise be impossible.
HIPS is best used with ABS while PVA is best used with PLA and other materials. HIPS dissolved in Limonene while PVA dissolves in cold water.
Wood-infused filaments
Wood-infused PLA Materials give a warm and tactile finish similar to that of wood. It is also one of the easiest 3D printing material to work with - no need for any specialised extruders and heated build platforms.
The final product can be sanded and stained just like normal wood. If your final product is to be made with wood, use these filaments to test the final feel of your products.

Carbon-Fibre infused filaments
Carbon-Fibre infused PLA filaments are comprised of approximately 20% chopped Carbon Fibre filaments infused with either Polylactic Acid (PLA) or PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET) filaments. Carbon-Fibre Filaments are more rigid than conventional PLA and PET. Yet, it is easy to print with standard PLA settings. The matte-black of Carbon-Fibre infused PLA filaments gives a nice finish that helps to mask layer lines.
Carbon-Fibre infused PLA filaments are ideal for end-use products such as drones and RC cars.

Metal-infused filaments
Metal-infused PLA filaments are comprised of approximately 20% metal shavings infused with PLA filaments. Metal-infused PLA filaments cool and solidify very quickly which allows for faster printing speeds. This also allows the printing of designs that may not be possible with other filaments.
Models printed with metal-infused PLA filaments can be sanded to obtain a finish similar to metal.

Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) Flexible filaments
TPE is an exciting filament that allows you to print soft and flexible products with a finish similar to that of rubber. TPE is also resistant to UV and certain common chemicals.
TPE is ideal for projects that require flexibility and elasticity. TPE filaments are good for many wearable electronics applications. In addition, it can also be used to create shoes, handlebar grips and even tires for RC cars. With the right settings, TPE prints are watertight which is great for floatation devices.

7. Size Difficult Angles with the Sliding Bevel

When working on small designs with intricate angular edges, the need to accurately measure small angles become extremely important in order to retain your model’s exact dimensions. In such circumstances, your digital angle finder cannot read these minute angles. Therefore, purchasing a sliding bevel as an added accessory to compliment efforts of a digital angle finder is the way to go. To do this, simply fit the bevel onto the angle and then use the digital angle finder to read it. The sliding bevel can also be used as a check and balancing instrument for maintaining angle consistency along the length of an object.

The contour gauge is a tool designed to accurately capture the profiles or outline of surfaces spotting multiple curves. 7 things to think about before you buy a 3d printer
Nearly every day, we have a visitor who wants to buy a 3D printer. Whatever your application, here are 7 things you need to think about before buying a 3D Printer.
A 3D printer should in no way be an impulse purchase, it’s a tool that requires plenty of attention and care. So read on and get in touch with us at [email protected] should you have any questions.
1. Reliability
Can you do a long print without worrying about the 3D printer stopping halfway? What must you take note of? Is the extruder mechanism a workhorse?
2. Ease of use
From importing your design file to actually pressing print on the 3D printer, how do I do it? Is it an intuitive system? Can I explore and make changes to the settings easily?
3. Build platform
What sort of preparation must I do to the build platform before 3D printing? How do I ensure that the materials being extruded stick to the build platform and when the print is done, how do i remove it?
4. Slicing Software
Does it come with it’s own slicing software? What is the update schedule like? Can the software generate supports automatically? (Supports are sort of like scaffolds, they are necessary to 3D print more complicated designs.)
5. Warranty
How long is the manufacturer’s warranty? What happens after that? What does the warranty cover and what doesn’t it cover?
6. Materials capability
So does your 3D Printer require 1.75mm filaments or 3mm filaments?
Does your 3D printer need any special modifications to take other specialty filaments such as Ninjaflex or any other flexible 3D printing materials?
Look for what has been tried and tested, see some test prints. This may not seem so important now, but when you get bored of the norm, this becomes necessary.
7. Test prints
Can I see some test prints from the 3D printer? Can I see a whole print process till the start of printing? What are the retraction settings and capabilities of this 3D printer. How have they been tested? One of my favourite test prints for clients is the Voronoi Torso. With this print, you get to see the movements, speed of printing and retraction - all at the same time. Of course, you don’t have to complete the print, just go about 10-20 minutes in.
