Next time anyone insists “the protests can’t be antisemitic, there are Jews involved,” remember that we have a sitting congressperson putting a target on the backs of all Jewish students who aren’t. A full grown adult member of congress is putting a target on the backs of young people her daughter’s age.

I really shouldn’t have to be explaining why it’s antisemitic to say that any Jew who doesn’t identify themselves as part of one particular group is “pro-genocide.” I really shouldn’t have to explain why it’s so insidious to say “antisemitism is wrong, no matter how genocidal so many Jews are 🥰” She knows exactly what she’s doing. The only question is, do they?

I haven't touched any watermelon recently, but I have narrowed it down to splashback from the wet swiffer mop or the hand soap in my bathroom, which means it's either a synthetic fragrance, a plant (the soap is plantbased but not hypoallergenic, I believe it has lavender in it and I know lavender gives me hay fever), or maybe some tiny little insect bite??

It's now less angry, but it's spread across the back of my hand over my knuckles and it's still itchy and stingy and I'm still going slightly mad lmao but it's not red enough to show up on camera anymore so I guess that's an improvement...?

Has anyone else with mast cell fuckery had this kind of rash happen from soap or fragranced cleaning supplies?

It's actually pretty normal for me for this to happen, but usually only when I touch raw eggs, which I haven't done recently. I noticed a fragrance around my house earlier today, and I think someone cleaned the bathroom. I also used a swiffer wet mop, although I did wear gloves when affixing the rag to the mop so it shouldn't have touched my skin (and the gloves didn't bother me yesterday).

It's SUPER itchy and not welty or blistery, but it is slightly raised and bright red. I have some itchy red patches elsewhere too and my season allergies have been extremely bad this year.

"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."

That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.

It does NOT mean

That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing

That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)

That you need to kill off characters (??? what)

That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones

That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to

The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.

The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.

OP, I take your point, but I think your frustration is misdirected.

It's not that people refuse to understand what this phrase means, it's that they were taught wrong by writing teachers who were wrong.

I was told by one of my college professors that 'kill your darlings' means you can't trust your own taste, and if you're attached to something it's probably because you're biased in your own favor, and you should delete it because it isn't as good as you think it is. (He used Stephen King as an example of someone who won't kill his darlings; I realize now he just didn't like king-isms).

Writers don't come by this misconception in a vacuum and blaming a bunch of people who were taught wrong for being taught wrong strikes me as a bit off.

Last week, I was having a tough night. My partner Sprite and I caught up on Bob's Burgers. It's kind of Our Show; we've been watching it together as our ~date night~ since season six.

We've fallen a bit behind, as we often do (we're both disabled and she has a new baby animal in the house so she's Understandably Extra Very Tired), but we made time, and it was a really sweet episode. I love when Louise and Linda get to connect and share their mad genius streak.

Basically, it was a really sweet episode of a show that brings me a lot of comfort. (Also, a lot of the cast is Jewish!)
