My guess as to what “dead dove do not eat” means

Do you ever just realize you’re too far into something to ask a basic question ?

I’ve been reading fanfiction for years and still don’t actually know what “dead dove do not eat” means. When I read my first ever fanfiction, my best friend at the time(who read way too much fanfiction and a ton of angsty shit) warned me that I, a normally very sweet fluff liking little guy, should avoid that tag. While I do now regularly read some more angsty fics sometimes, I still never learned what that tag meant. I avoided the tag so long and then just made my own assumptions/guesses?

This is not me asking for anyone to explain it to me. I’m aware I could just look it up. I choose not to because it adds chaos and confusion to my life, and I’m scared of what searching that would come up with.

This is instead, all my guesses for your amusement

They eat birds

They canabalize something

There’s avians or bird people

There’s like, symbolism???

Broken innocence? In some way? Like, a bible reference???

An even more fucked up version of telling people not to beat a dead horse

It’s just sad without further specifics

Steven universe Fitpac au

Never posted any fanfics, but can't get this out of my head.

for context, this is an au based on Steven universe. If you've never watched SU, it might be ever so slightly confusing, but I think you'll be fine.

pac is the pearl, fit is one of the jaspers

Pearl sits at the control panel and touches nothing. He had adjusted the ship for their passenger weight and coordinates when they first got on, and hasn't touched anything but his chair since.

this is his punishment. He knows that. He couldn't be enough, so he lost his diamond. He lost getting to be his diamond's pearl, that is. Now he belonged to an agate on a ship that was headed to a random uncharted planet in order to make more gems for their homeworld. More gems who would eventually go to more planets and make more gems so that those gems could make more gems, and so on and so forth until there was nothing left but gem colonies for the diamonds to rule over.

On their ship, they currently have 3 jaspers for protection and brute force, 5 nephrite's for piloting, their leading agate, and pearl. Pearl facet-9AC to be exact. His only purpose here was to take notes. He planned to document statistics and do agate's biding. Aside from that, he sat still. He sat still and waited for instructions. It's not like he could do much more anyways. After all, he had been cracked. When... it ...had happened, Pac's gem had taken damage, along with his physical form. He was now missing one leg on his form, and no matter how much he tried to shift it back, he could never seem to get it back to normal. He had gotten limb enhancers made for him, but they were weaker than the older, nicer, models. After all of it went down, he was too expendable to have real resources put into him. He had tried getting fixed by pink or the reef, but there was nothing that could actually put him back together. So he was replaced. I mean, that made sense! His diamond, Pink Diamond, could not be walking around with a pathetic cracked pearl! Pink needed a pearl just as perfect as him.

"My agate, we seem to be entering an uncharted meteor belt" one nephrite said, while looking between their panels and the window. Pearl had honestly gotten so lost in his own head that he managed to forget where they were

"so fly around it! We don't have time to deal with this. Pearl! Are you sure you set up the map properly?" His agate replied, turning from yelling at the nephrite in order to stare him down.

and he thinks he did? Right? Yes! He checks and checks again and again before responding "yes my agate. The map is the correct path to planet Q539. The asteroid belt is likely just not fully charted, considering how far out we are from homeworld, my agate".

"Don't talk down to me! I know we're far out. I was just making sure you hadn't made a stupid mistake. Nephrite! Continue forward. We must get to the planet on schedule, otherwise I'll be hearing it from yellow, and I'll see to it myself that it becomes everyone's problem. I refuse to disappoint my diamond, or let any lesser life forms get in the way either!"

Their main nephrite began attempting to steer around the belt, before it became clear there was no way around it. No way up, down, left, or right. Only through. But that's ok! Nephrite's are pilots. That's their purpose. Just like a quartz is made to work and guard and a pearl is made to serve, a nephrite was made to pilot ships and aircraft's with great precision. Nephrites were almost always the first gem to be sent to new land so that they could just get an idea of the resources and come straight back. This planet, planet Q539, was a part of a colony already deemed to be insignificant enough that there wasn't really much to report on. They would just use the planet's energy for gem creation, and come back to homeworld. No need to scout things out or document anything aside from notes on the statistics of certain traits during gem formation, which was Pac's job.

they began going through the belt with few disturbances. The ship had synthetic gravity, so it could go as sideways and wayward as it wanted without impacting any passengers in the slightest. Then the meteors got denser. More tightly packed. Everything was so close together. But it was going to be fine! This is their job! Not Pearl's. Besides! They were all expendable Gems! No necessary gems would have been placed on such an insignificant task. the Nephrite's knew what was going on, and-

"My Agate! I don't mean to startle you, but the meteors are getting closer and more dense. We may need to turn around and find a new route, otherwise-"

"and waste time on second guessing? You're a nephrite! Steer the damn ship like you were designed to do!"

"My agate! I-" and there was a large crash before they could finish. The systems on the ship start blaring, the screens all turn red and warn of caution, the lights begin flashing, and a screen with the layout of the ship appears on Pac's screen. On the screen, he can see that one leg of the ship was ripped off- But that doesn't mean anything! They can land! They WILL land! Pac is not going to be shattered in the middle of nowhere on a trip he was given as punishment for not being enough. He won't be shattered. He won't be shattered! He-

"MY AGATE! We're within distance of the planet! We must make an emergency touch down! We can't get to our planned location, but it's the only way to preserve the ship well enough for return!"

Pearl realizes what they're saying and HAS to interject! He tries warning over the blaring systems, "one of the legs of the ship is broken! We won't be able to touch down without crashing! We need to aim for water or something to soften the blow!"

"I don't care what you have to do! Get us landed safely!" Agate screams at her inferiors while covering her ears. "PEARL! Turn off that screaming! NOW!"

Pearl reaches for his control panel but he can barely see. The systems are flashing and pulsing and screaming at him and he doesn't know what to do. He wasn't made for this! He reaches for his panel, only for it to shock him. That's... not supposed to be possible?! Pearl goes to the maintenance and accident logs to see if he can turn off the awful blaring sounds, but all he sees is more and more parts of the ship turning red in their map. First it's another leg, then the back port, then part of the battery! Pearl's ears are ringing and he can't see and people are yelling. at each other and it's so bright and blurry and he doesn't known what's going on and he hears screams and cries and crunching and cracking and-

everything goes black.

Ramón would have loved the fact !Fit keeps trying to set up an arranged marriage between himself and !Pac and its getting close to spring.

I can't remember the exact date but this certainly isn't the first time one of Hideduo suggested something similar.

me and my friends have been making stuff about it for like a year now and we do it for personal enjoyment BUT I decided to post this one because I really liked how it turned out!

fit is an orbicular jasper, and pac is a moon pearl ! (also yes, pac is tall so he had to lean like that hehe)

ive made a version of this too 😭😂

my version has pac being a pearl and Fit being a jasper. They were sent on a mission and got completely stranded. Their ship crashed, their crew mates shattered, and both of their gems chipped, causing their amputations.

Fit’s focused entirely on clearing a sector for them with absolutely no foreign life, and Pac’s trying to find anyway whatsoever to stay on directive. Fit obsesses over every little thing to feel like he has any control because he’s panicking, similar to jasper in SU future. Pac is more like when our Pearl first got to earth, minus rose. He thinks everything here is gorgeous and fascinating and deserves documenting and love, but doesn’t let himself love any of it, because he’s not supposed to. He tries to help Fit as much as he can, but Fit keeps getting upset and he keeps getting distracted. Eventually, pac has been secretly learning about all the local creatures and Fit’s been stressing so much that just finally breaks down. He fully breaks down. His form is wrong, this planet is wrong, he has no contact with home world, their mission is screwed, and he’s never going to get to go home ever again.

pac doesn’t know what to do. He just comforts him. Fit keeps telling at him and telling him to go away, but pac just stays there with him. Let’s him know he’s not alone. They’re trapped and stranded and will never get to have their lives or limbs back, but they’re here together at least. And Fit just gives in. He’s ashamed and upset, but he can’t help it.

pac kind of holds fit to calm him down, and Fit just lets himself be held.

until they fuse.

HE DIDNT MEAN TO! They didn’t mean to? It didn’t mean to? Whatever! They unfuse as soon as they realize. Fit doesn’t say a word. He shuts up and goes to his cleared out land. And pac just stares. It was everything. He felt safe. Genuinely safe. He felt safe and loved and appreciated and he needs that back.
