Devil's Bath
Devil’s Bath
Devil’s Bath is thought to be the only, and therefore largest, cenote in Canada. The sinkhole has a 359 m diameter and a depth of about 44 m. The cenote is fed by an underground spring and the constant rain that the area receives helps.
A cenote is a large water-filled sinkhole found in limestone. Acid and other minerals in the local water systems dissolve the limestone, leaving behind…

Kathleen Lake
Kathleen Lake is a great place for a picnic, if you can find it.
When you drive the Alice Lake Loop towards Port McNeill, you change elevations many times. One descent gives an amazing view of a calm lake below. This stunning view of Kathleen Lake is only visible between the trees in a few spots. If possible stop to take it in but be aware of active logging.
Once you reach the bottom of the mountain, you take a few side roads and make your way to the south…

Reappearing River
The Reappearing River is where the Benson River flows out from under the local karst landscape and reappears after having travelling underground for 2km.
Reappearing River is one part of the Alice Lake Loop. Visitors can explore many different karst formations as well as lakes for camping, fishing, or kayaking.
It is easy to miss the turn off for this site. The sign is very small and…

Vanishing River
As a child, I heard stories about Vanishing Rivier. I heard that the Vanishing River earned its name because it defied the scientists who tried to find where it went. I heard that scientists put GPS trackers into the river so they would float along and the river could be mapped but the GPS trackers always vanished along the route and could never provide the data. Rumours circulated that…

Dakota 576 Crash
Follow my blog with Bloglovin
On a windy day in April 1944, a Dakota 576 overshot the Port Hardy runway. It circled around again to make a second attempt but ran out of fuel. The plane crashed, killing the pilot and navigator. The crew member in the back of the plane survived. You can read the full story on the 101 NI Squadron website.

To reach this trail it is best to park your…

San Josef Bay, more commonly called San Joe, it located in the Cape Scott Provincial Park. It is at the northern end of Vancouver Island on the west coast. To access the park, visitors must take the highway to Port Hardy and then navigate active logging roads for approximately 60 km. The roads are well marked but it never hurts to have a backroads maps just in…

Travel During COVID-19
hav Follow my blog with Bloglovin
We are currently living through an unprecedented time. The rise of COVID-19 has shuttered many boarders. For the last few weeks travel during COVID-19 has been all but eliminated, even locally. While it makes me sad I understand. I would never want to risk bringing this virus back to my parents or grandparents.
With summer approaching I have been…

10 Best Places to go for New Year's Eve!
10 Best Places to go for New Year’s Eve!
Happy New Year. May it be better than your last.
Photo by Emilio Guzman on Unsplash
I learned something that blew my mind the other day. I learned that I may wish you a happy and prosperous New Year but I can not welcome you to the new decade. This new year, despite being 2020, is technically not the beginning of the new decade. Apparently, 2021 is the start of the new decade. Though…

Santorini
There are a few ways to arrive at Santorini. Mom and I took the ferry from Naxos, only an hour or so away by ferry. The fast ferries that run in Greece are very efficient with how they work. When we boarded the ferry in Naxos there were a number of racks, labelled with the ports you could board the boat at. As you walked to the stairs at the back of the boat you left your bag in the correct area…

Naxos

Leaving Mykonos, mom and I took the ferry to Naxos Island. Waiting for the ferry in Mykonos was organized. There were a few different lines for different ferry companies keeping people organized as boats arrived. There are many ferries each day headed to various locations and the Mykonos terminal is a busy place.
Being from an island, Mom and I are very familiar with travel via ferry. B…

Mykonos

We landed at Mykonos airport early in the morning after an early flight from Naples. The bus schedule showed that it would be almost an hour before the next bus came. We went to line up with many of the other passengers from our plane at the taxi stand. The taxis came at a steady pace for a while and then trickled to a slow. Worried about waiting for taxis people began to share.
There was a…

Naples (Airport)
Due to our tour to Mount Vesuvius running late, we arrived in Naples without much time to explore. We got to the train station and looked into taking the Hop-On Hop-Off bus. Unfortunately, the last run was at 5 pm and it was almost 5 pm. Mom and I decided to just head to the hotel and then we could walk around the area and find a place for dinner.
Our hotel was a capsule hotel in Naples…

Mount Vesuvius

After visiting the Pompeii Archaeological Site, mom and I made plans to travel to Mount Vesuvius the next day. We checked in at a tourist shop next to our hotel. The company had openings in the 10 a.m. tour. We booked in with them and went to wander around and find dinner and the train station.
On our way back to the hotel we found a nice little cafe to sit and watch the main square of Pompeii…

Pompeii

Mom and I had a flight in the late morning. We left Dubrovnik and headed to Naples. A bus went directly to Pompeii, near the main entrance of the archaeological site.
We wanted to find our hotel and drop off our bags before we ventured into the archaeological site. Our hotel was near the back entrance of the site and it took it just over half an hour to walk there and find it. Hot,…
