It had been months since her younger sister had fled the West. Normand had not been quite so responsive to her advances since then as she would have liked. Melisenda suspected that she may have been too eager - surely his pride had been wounded! Still, she would be relentless in her pursuit. She was nothing like either of her sisters and, now with all of the Wystan inheritance for her own, she was certain that Normand would finally look her way. 

Across the crowded room, she had been making eyes at him. Noticing his agitation, she brought him a goblet of wine (both to strike up a conversation and - more importantly! - to show him how she might anticipate his every need as his wife.) What she had not counted for, was that she might have been cause for his agitation in the first place. 

“I only meant to please you, my lord,” She replied, fluttering her eyelids in a way she had practiced in the mirror (her ladies all assuring her she looked quite enticing). 

“None at all, my lord. And I don’t expect to hear a word of her whereabouts. If any correspondence were to arrive, my father would dash it into the fire, unopened. And as he rightly should! She is a silly, ungrateful little beast and our family is happy to be rid of her,” Melisenda placed a hand on Normand’s arm, “What she did to you was unforgivable. Any woman would sell her very soul for the chance to be your wife. I’m sorry you were ever betrothed to her, at all, but I am pleased you did not have the misfortune of having married her. Now you are free to find someone else ... someone much more deserving.” Someone like me. 

Beltane Rites | Normand & Melisenda

Normand glanced around himself.  The night was splendid, filled with lights and laughter and dancing and drink.  It was just the sort of night Normand liked best.  He also liked the sight of a pretty lady in a red dress approaching him…that is, until he recognized her.  Melisenda had the great misfortune of reminding Normand of one of the most humiliating episodes of his life: his short-lived betrothal to Amia Wystan.  

Scowling, he looked away, hoping in vain to make a mistake, but someone was talking to him, putting a drink in his hand and then she was there.  “What do you want?” he asked, dispiritedly, regarding her closely.

Normand’s instinct was to say something cruel and storm off to prove he could conquer the situation, but sadly, tonight he could not.  Tonight was, as much as anything, about convincing the West that he could make a viable candidate as Warden and even Normand knew that pouncing at the first sign of hurt would damage the image he meant to conjure.  No, tonight he’d have to wait her out.

He took a long quaff and smiled at her rather reluctantly.  “I don’t suppose you’ve any news of your errant sister?” he added, dismissively, smiling brightly at someone who passed to pretend that this was not bothering him.  It would not do to expose a weakness.  He’d seen a legion of sharks pounce at a single drop of blood.  He didn’t mean to be a feast.  “Has she changed her mind and come crawling back to beg me to take her?  I’ll not have her, you should know.  She is ruined already, I suspect, and I’ll not take any man’s leavings.”

haha omg these two are bffs!!!!! I feel like their friendship is honestly so??? weird???? melisenda does NOT know how friendship or relationships work tbh ahah and I feel like she would like to say passive aggressive things to andrya like “aww, I love how you will just wear anything!” but when she isn’t lowkey talking shit about drya to her face, these two have been known to just rant about their awful sisters to each other!!! 

Also Melisenda was def highkey jealous that Andrya got married before her but now she feels like Andrya is getting what she deserves from that slight since  Persivyl def isn’t rich enough to be worth catching haha. Anyway, Melisenda is def going to try to go to Andrya for tips on how to catch her cousin b/c obviously Noramnd is the ideal man!!!!

Melisenda’s #1 goal in life is to marry a good husband (her definition of good just means money and a title lmao) so I can see where she had once set her sights on Quincy and then he married an easterner inSTEAD (rude!!!!!) so I can see where Melisenda tried to befriend Isabella when she arrived but only meant to sabotage her and make her life here a living hell (perhaps even start rumors that she was unfaithful to her husband!!!!) But I feel like all of that backfired b/c Melisenda would never be able to outsmart Isabella, ever.

these sisters!!!!! wow!!!!!!

Okay, so gresilda is the eldest and being four years older than melisenda, I feel like there was a time (which melisenda would deny to her grave!!!!) where mellie thought gresilda was!!!! the greatest!!!!! thing!!! in the entire world!!!!

Also, if I remember correctly, the Wystans also had a bro who was twins w/ Gresilda who was a dragon rider??? And yeah, so both of them were suPER amazing as far as Melisenda was concerned!!! (I can’t remember what we decided for the Wystan parents but I think we decided that they were pretty hands off parents haha which kind of accounted for how different their kids turned out to be?? It kind of works with my headcannon that there was a time where mels wanted to be jUST like her brother and sister!!! and didn’t even really have any idea that, gresilda at least, was considered weird for her non-ladylike behavior. 

(Also i cry!!!! b/c I feel like gresilda taught young melisenda all kinds of actuALLY useful things!!! and now melisenda has repressed thoSE memories b/c god dammit she will NEVER make a fire herself!!!! and if you asked, she nEVER has!!!) 

I do think that Melisenda just wants to feel loved and adored b/c she felt very neglected by their parents and instead, got that kind of affection from her siblings (also can see where they would have potentially spoiled her??? if not gresilda then perhaps their brother?)

But then she got older and met other people and realized that her sister was a ~freak and that she diD nOT want to be like her at all and stopped spending any time w/ her and just got herself a bunch of shallow friends and they’d just sit around working on their appearance and making fun of gresilda’s??? #whoops and melisenda thrived off of the attention/admiration/feeling of superiority she felt from it all and really hasn’t been the same since

I do think deep down she still cares about her sister but you wouldn’t know it to talk to her about it. I think Gresilda has been super embarrassing for her and Melisenda would constantly blame her lack of suitors on Gresilda tbh like “no one wants to have someone like you as a sister-in-law” and was basically like “good riddance” when she left (also I feel like Amia was also competition b/c she was prettier and kinder and even though she was the youngest wystan was probably still the most appealing haha -- not that melisenda would eVER admit that amia is a better catch than she is but she’s glad she is gone too .... although it grates on her that both sisters are gone and she’s sTIll verY single ahha but she still likes to think that the damage has already been done and no one wants to marry gresilda or amia’s sister especially since amia walked out on normand vipont!!!) 

Anyway, this is getting very long haha but these are my initial thoughts!
