i love that pure heroine is this album written from the perspective of a teenager hanging around the outskirts of a party, watching all the beautiful people drink and dance and kiss but never participating, wanting to participate and hating yourself for it. it’s about feeling like you don’t fit in but also it’s an album all about friendship, connection, it’s written from the perspective of we, us, and there’s this theme of us-against-them that runs through the whole album, it’s like lorde’s saying maybe we ditched the party but hey, it’s better this way. 

and then melodrama is about stepping into the party, throwing yourself fully  into it, being the center of all this light and sound and fluorescent emotion, but it’s also an album about loneliness. she starts with ���we” but fades to “i” by the time we reach liability: baby really hurt me. i’m a little much for everyone. lorde is surrounded by people on the dance floor, on the subway, but she’s learning what it means to be truly alone for the first time, losing herself and putting herself back together, every night. it’s thrilling but also deeply sad and solitary in the way new adulthood sometimes feels. 

i’m just !!! amazed that she made two albums with completely different sounds and themes but somehow made a single story out of them!
