accidents do happen, even to the best of us, it's true. this author is not entirely convinced 'accident' is the right word here, however. spilled milk? now that's an accident. stepping on toy bricks in the dark, dropping a glass on the floor, or forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning: all misfortunes and mishaps, all fair game — nothing an appropriate amount of grovelling and a mop or broom couldn't fix, perhaps even a bandaid and a kiss. in the case of the following events (as they were relayed to us), the fateful decision and the gleam in a determined, overconfident eye that preceded them, the laughing in the face of fate with all the well-intentioned brashness of youth? perhaps 'calamity' is more appropriate. it's on you, dearest reader, to decide.
