Short Poem: The Monster

The monster does not stalk or chase

Does not shirk from light nor shrink with shame

The way you do.

The monster allows the sun to shine

On every grotesque twist of its body,

Sits silent on piles of unfolded laundry and empty bottles with arms outstretched.

The monster knows you will fall into its strangling embrace,

Despite your body bearing scars of countless nights you let

jagged claws caress your hallow skin.

When you can not see it’s face,

When your clenched eyes are buried in its writhing chest,

The monster is almost kind. Comfortable.

You do not notice tendrils tightening

Darkness glowing

Stench wafting from every rotten crevice.

When, if, you see the beast that holds you,

The monster grins.

Broken fangs mock your attempt to escape,

Your heavy breaths,

Your tongue turning blue with suffocation.

The monster traces your jugular,

Tilts up your head,

And whispers you the only word it knows:

“Forget.”
