The Causes and Dangers of Famine in Gaza

The famine in Gaza is caused by several critical factors:

first, the ongoing blockade severely limits access to food, medicine, and basic supplies;

second, continuous destruction from conflict has left families without homes, jobs, or resources;

third, humanitarian aid is often blocked or delayed.

These conditions have created a deadly crisis for children like Qais. Malnutrition is weakening their bodies and putting their lives at risk. Without urgent help, many may not survive.

I am exhausted mentally, emotionally, and physically. I watch my son cry from hunger, and I feel helpless. Qais is only a baby — the famine could take his life if we don’t get support soon. I live in Gaza too. And I’m living the same reality — struggling to find food, to stay safe, to keep hope alive.

🕊️ In this month of pride, I hope we also remember that true pride can sometimes mean survival - holding onto love, protecting the vulnerable, and staying a parent in a war that consumes everything.

While we celebrate pride, love, and courage this month, as queer people we should remember that we are free only when ALL of us are free and we should be doing what we can to free Palestine.

This includes supporting those directly affected by the genocide in Gaza, like my friend Ahmed and his family:

He is a humble man from northern Gaza, an accountant by profession, who is now living through one of the hardest tragedies a father can endure. Ahmed isn’t an activist, nor is he asking for the impossible. He’s simply a father of four, trying to keep his children alive.

Today, his baby girl Ronza turns one.

Yes, today is her birthday. One full year of life — a year filled not with laughter, but with the sound of drones, the smell of tents, the absence of baby formula, a lack of medicine, and her mother’s silent tears every night.

Ronza is suffering from malnutrition because the borders are closed, aid is being looted, and there is no milk, no diapers, not even a safe place to sleep. Ahmed cannot leave Gaza, and he can no longer afford food. Yet, he hasn't lost his humanity, his dignity, or his love for his children.

🎂 Happy Birthday, little Ronza — a beautiful soul who deserves to celebrate like every child in this world.

And to you reading this: you have a choice — to simply witness, or to be someone who makes a difference.

Mothers in Gaza are nothing short of extraordinary. I genuinely cannot imagine what fears and anxieties they must be grappling with every waking moment of the past 19 months of this genocide.

I'm dedicating this post to four mothers who have been navigating these daily tragedies, dodging Israeli strikes while trying to provide essentials for their families.

🤍 Amal is a mother to a beautiful 2 year old daughter. Amal has been displaced multiple times and survived several Israeli attacks throughout the past 19 months. She’s adamant on providing her daughter with the basic necessities she needs, which is why she’s been fundraising nonstop.

🤍 Maram is a mother of two beautiful children, one of whom was born during this genocide. Living in a tent, Maram’s only wish is to keep her family safe and to secure their basic needs through a whole year of campaigning, yet her campaign remains very low on funds.

🤍 Noor is another mother from Gaza navigating the horrors of this genocide while trying to keep her children safe. Her campaigning efforts are mainly to support her 4 year old disabled son, Muhammad, whose therapy and treatment were halted by Israel’s genocide.

🤍 Reem has been campaigning for months for the sake of her family. She has four gorgeous daughters and her sweet son. Her campaign was created to cover the cost of their evacuation, however, since that wasn’t successful, the campaign is now their only means to afford basic necessities to survive this genocide.
