Baked Ziti from A Hundred Years, Then by @nuttersinc

I read this fic on my flight and added it to my list because it had a lot of food mentions. I was originally supposed to make three dishes from it today, Baked Ziti, Leek Soup, and Eton Mess. But I've been low energy and mood since I got back and my grocery delivery had one key ingredient missing, so I chose to make only one main dish, Baked Ziti.

It's a cheesy pasta casserole and very easy to put together, great for days when brain doesn't want to brain. I used Italian sausage and cheeses like provolone, mozzarella, and gouda. I was out of parmesan my beloved, so I skipped it, but you should add it if you want a nuttier taste.

Now for the fic ~~

There's not a lot of description about the recipe for Baked Ziti itself but the scene starts with details about Butter Chicken. As I've already made butter chicken a few times, I skipped it, but I'll add some lines about other food. It's a gorgeous fic with alternative endings for each meeting between Hob and Dream. The food scene happens in chapter 6 after Dream is rescued by Hob and Johanna and he enters Hob's dreams, where he is cooking.

Hob is dreaming of standing in his kitchen, raiding his fridge, when Dream steps into his dreams.

“Are you hungry?” he asks, tilting his head and taking in the way Dream is standing in the middle of his kitchen with his hands thrust into the pockets of his coat. “You look hungry.”

When Dream nods, because yes, he is, he’s in fact ravenous.

[Hob here offers multiple foods to Dream who is so hungry he eats everything.]

Hob opens the oven and takes out a steaming lamb stew with dried plums and a baked ziti.

Dream settles himself at the kitchen island on a high chair- he could conjure a more comfortable arrangement, but this is Hob’s dream and he doesn’t want to interfere, guessing that the impromptu casualness of the midnight feast has a hidden layer of meaning for Hob. He demolishes the bowl of mediaeval leek soup and the Moroccan lamb stew and the ziti... Still, the food keeps on coming and the empty plates pile around them.

The story is gorgeous and I hope you give it a read. I plan to make the other recipes too, but for today this is all I can do. *crawling back to bed*

(And I’m serious because how could you not after all the signs?)

Okay, after today’s Lucienne and Matthew news, which very likely mean unbridled moping in the rain, can I just say the following:

I’ve basically felt from day one they should replace Thessaly with Johanna. For a million reasons. Mostly because it makes show-narrative sense, but also because I’m selfish and would love to see less bi-erasure in fandom (it is a lofty goal, I know). So we see a bi woman have f/f AND m/f relationships and don’t just hype the same sex one and then ignore the other one as “straight”, as usually happens.

I’m still wildly convinced (well, hunch-style 🤣) we’re getting ConstantDream in the show. I’ll be embarrassed about it later if it doesn’t happen yet will survive, but I wrote a million times about it, so may I just draw attention to two of many:

The cinematography/framing (so many romance shots!)

His eyes in the lower one (you know when they get all sparkly with a slightly golden glow, right?)

The rain!

Her saying, “None of us can be trusted.”

Matthew saying he doesn’t like her in S1 (which is a direct mirror of the scene we’ve talked about, where he says to Lucien that he never liked Thessaly).

The way it already makes sense (Dream took Johanna’s nightmares away—she could just dream of him out of gratefulness or whatever. Same thing as with Thessaly really, easy to do).

The soundtrack. Yes, we have musical clues, read the meta.

Slight spoilers, proceed at your own risk…

The fact we’ve literally no news about AGoY and know that Wanda/Ruby have been rolled into one, which could totally mean Wanda’s arc has been changed (she doesn’t need to die in a storm/collapsed building, she might as well die in a fire).

The way that Johanna would protect Lyta for all the right reasons because of her experience with Astra.

And did I mention the rain? THE UNGODLY AMOUNT OF RAIN.
