yeah people have been too negative for my liking, imo you should only worry if he was actually slow because if you dont have pace then youre actually 100% fucked, but that hasnt happened so let him learn about the car while its still early

yeah like. if he didn't have race pace on sunday, i would be much more worried about this season. dirty air sucks this year but imho he's not always going to be stuck in it! he's let himself down on saturday a couple times while trying too hard to get the absolute maximum out of the car, that's bad, sure, but he's not exactly languishing far behind in the standings about it either. when he does put a lap together he's fucking fast. it's absolutely getting closer to a tipping point where he does need to clean it up in q3, especially once the other teams close the gap, but yeah, let's ride this out yk there's a lot of points on the table and he's got a very fast car with which to get them

Personally i think lando should be pushing the car to the limit in q3 and if he fucks it up (now at the start of the season obviously 😭) then so be it, i think red bull and mercedes are one update away from catching them at least on saturdays, he needs to learn how to push that car to the limit because maybe at the middle of the season a "safe" lap will only get you p5

yeah exactly!! i think the beginning of the year is exactly when he can and should be just a bit too aggressive, maybe fuck up, and still end up the middle of the front runners (as long as he completes the lap), like he's had this rare, valuable grace period early in the season to get locked in, where the mclaren car is strong enough that he can go in just a bit too hot, lose time, and qualify well regardless.

after these early races, he's got a solid base of points to fight later on in the year that he simply didn't have last time, despite him loudly and openly struggling with the car. it's crazy how negative people are being about this, when i genuinely think we're seeing the wobbly first steps of a monster later in the year. oscar is doing well, all kudos to him, but is this maybe potentially already him at his maximum with the car? it's possible 🤷🏻 we'll have to wait and see!!!

last year up until monaco lando and oscar were basically tied in qualifying (i think the difference in delta was like 0.007 so basically nothing) and it was from barcelona onwards that lando really started to be able to get some spectacular q3 laps, the car was maybe easier to drive for him but it wasnt until a bit later that he was able to extract everything out of it in qualifying, so im sure he'll be able to get there again, at least he had these problems now and not by race 18

yeah like maybe i sound a little insane to be like "i'm actually encouraged that lando is fucking up by pushing too hard in q3" because he's dialing in on the limit of what that car can do. he's overthinking and overshooting right now in his attempts to get a feel for it, to get back to a place where he can drive in a flow state with it, but once he does???????? watch out 🥰

Q: (Albert Fabrega – ESPN Latam) Question for Lando. Do you think this year’s DNA of the car is better suited to Oscar driving style rather than yours?

LN: It's a difficult one to answer. Yeah, it's very difficult to answer. I think there are just certain things which don't allow me to feel what I need to feel and those things are what allow me to drive to the level that I can drive at—to get pole positions and to drive at the highest level in racing. We're talking about small things. It's not like it's impossible to drive all of a sudden. It's just when we're talking about qualifying split by hundredths of a second, thousandths of a second, that's what I'm complaining of and nothing more than that. Yeah, it's not one I can probably just give you a yes or no answer to. I think he's maybe more naturally able to adapt. And I also think it's a driver’s job to adapt to whatever car they get given, but there are compromises, and the team are also there to try and help you get the most out of the car. But it's clear there have been some changes and whether it's just suited Oscar or Oscar’s way, or him doing a better job at adapting, that's not for me to kind of know or try and figure out or waste my time on. But yeah, for me, it's also hurt me a little bit more and I've not been able to perform at the level that I was at the end of last season, which I think is the best level that I've been.

I think Lando first minimizing the differences between him and Oscar, and then saying "it's not for me to know or try and figure out or waste my time on" whether the car was better suited to Oscar or if Oscar just adjusted faster is an interesting insight into his mentality at the moment—what matters are the steps he and the team are making for HIM to adjust. He's not in his head obsessing about how well his teammate is doing, he's aware of it obviously, but he's not fixated on it. While it's interesting that he states the fact that he was hurt a little bit more in the change between the end of last year and the beginning of this one, he frames it as him praising himself for how well he was doing at the end of the previous year, rather than being super negative about how well he is doing now, you know? He was exceptional before and that's why the difference is more marked. I also think he can and will get there again :)
