Matthew-Ronay's Four Modal Modules and the Parallax Effect
While researching how the parallax effect works in animation, I came across Matthew-Ronay's Modal Modules project, or "tunnel books," published by #threestarbooks. Tunnel books, also known as peepshow books, have existed since the mid-18th century. They typically consist of several pages made of cardstock, each with cut-out shapes that reveal the layers beneath, and are mounted with two accordion strips. When viewed from the front, these cut-out shapes give the illusion of a scene with depth and movement. I find these beautiful works by Ronay very inspiring when thinking about the final animation project.

I agree with AJ. Despite the frenziness of the flicking lights and the never-stopping moving lines, this immersive installation generates calm among the participants. I was lucky to experience it at the Park Armory in 2011. Although we were warned upon entry that this piece included strobe effects that could cause confusion and disorientation, I found it soothing and pleasant from the start. There were people of all ages, and kids were jumping over the moving lines, but I didn't see anyone running out of control. The adults were all relaxed in a perfect moment of collective harmony.

HELLO/HELP
I combined several found film and tape stop-motion clips with an abstract image made with paint and Photoshop. I accidentally generated a sad little character. The rolling-down color tape and film look like it's raining on her face. Or that she is crying endlessly. Or both.
I am interested in the rain effect, something that I might use in future work.
