The power of people
Three Stories, Three Continents, One Commitment to Change聽
Elemental was an extremely powerful and moving film. It聽showed how a single human can make so much of a difference. The film focuses on three characters and their commitment to change. A native Alaskan woman, who fights Tar Sands聽corperations聽for her land and her people through activism. An Indian man who see the Ganges River, Mother, being destroyed. Though education, sanitation, and community support; there is a chance for India to reclaim their Mother. A brilliant man, with a love for the environment, turn to nature to solve the current climate crisis. His radical ideas soon become reality as he will impact the world in a powerful, important way.
Can you commit to change?

OH MY GOD, GMO'S!
Tumblr media
GMO OMG

Jeremy seeks out answers so that he can not only keep his family safe, but keep us safe as well. GMO's are聽left in the dark in the US. They are not labeled, yet they are in almsot all of the food we eat. Key corporations work together with the government to increase GMO's and keep them secret to increase revenue. It's time to stand up for our Right to Know, and our health. Keep GMO's out of the ground, off the shelves, and away from our tables.

Corruption, Greed, Money, War, Destruction... Can you be a "Big Man"?
Big Men.
This film exposed the greed and corruptiion in Ghana and Nigeria in the hopes of becoming "Big". Yet becoming "Big" always seemed to be at the expense of someone else, of the earth. Big Men showed the exploitation of resources and the people of Africa, the influence that corporations have on other countries, and the power that drives humans to find and extract resources for energy (Money).
It surpirsed me to see the access that Rachel Boynten was granted thoughout her several years of filming; multple coutries, oil COO's&CEO's, guerilla militant groups, African political and religous figures, and the people affected by them.
This all access pass to Africa was a masterpiece depicting environmentalism, human greed, the need for oil, and corporations.

Nuclear vs. the World.
Pandora's Promise.
The most controversial film at CIFF, go figure, it was the last film. The placement of this film for the event, along with the Q&A left myself, and much of the audience wondering...
Is nuclear the way? Or was this film biased. It seemed to touch little on alternative energy sources other than nuclear. It certianly brought to light the strugles with coal, oil, natural gas, but did it give us a solution? Or, just a radical idea in the future of energy. With much more research to go, this film showed the other side of the environmentalistic coin.

Remote Area Medical brought to light the聽strugles of Americans who don't have acccess to healthcare or medicine. Althoguh this was not a "political" documentary, you can't help but wonder about the governments involvement with the nations healthcare systems, including a future involving Obamacare. Thousands of locals have gone years, even decades without even having a teeth cleaning, eyes exam, mamogram, ANYTHING! This documentary shows us the issues that many americans are going through and how a small group of volunteers makes a signficant impact on a person by providing free health, dental, and vision exams and treamtent.

Points North Pitch: The Ocean Doesn't Care
Due to聽its early stages, I'm curious as to how the directors will able able to have a focus on American tourism in Mexico without diverging too much onto Santos' story: un chico de quince a帽os que vende su cuerpo a los hombres americanos.

Making everything out of nothing... The power of passion, hope, and the wind.
William and the Windmil
William and The Windmill brought to light the impact that media and money has on the ignorant. William's life drastically changed after his fame from a TED Talk. From there, he left his home in Arusha to go to America. He shortly thereafter signed his life away to a production company聽who wishes to turn William's book into a movie. All the hype and whirlwind of society engulfed who William was. Hopefully soon he will be able to return to Africa to do what he was meant to do; spread his knowledge and ingenuity to better the lives of his people.聽
