Today is #NationalGetOutdoorsDay. 🏕 And I just found out that only about 7% of US National Park visitors are Black. Only 7%! Guess the percentage of white visitors in the comments. ⠀⠀ So damn straight we’re gonna talk about what National Get Outdoors Day looks like for the Black community. ⠀⠀ First off, I’m white. I grew up in the country, in upstate NY. My dad took my sister and I hiking. My mom took us on road trips to beaches and zoos. We went camping every summer. I went to @unitycollege, an Environmental college in Maine, to earn a BS in wildlife biology. ⠀⠀ We weren’t rich, but we weren’t poor. We had ACCESS to outdoor spaces. We lived on a mountain in an old firehouse with a creek in our backyard. They instilled a love of nature and wildlife in me. An interest in outdoor recreation and conservation. ⠀⠀ Because we had the privilege of growing up with these experiences. Because our town was safe. Our parks were crime-free (minus my sister and I spray painting our faces under a bridge lol 🤦‍♀️). ⠀⠀ I’m learning more about why so few Black people are visiting our parks. A lot of Black employees are still paid less than white coworkers, despite having the same education and work history. And they have the highest unemployment rate among any racial groups [from the georgewright.org/351scott.pdf paper]. ⠀⠀ So many are forced to live in the poorer parts of their city. Crimes are higher here, parental awareness and paranoia of safety is heightened, and Black children are just simply not often getting that knowledge, skill set, and appreciation for the outdoors passed down to them. ⠀⠀ Outdoor areas are often viewed as white spaces and off limits to the Black community. ⠀⠀ I’ve never really thought about or noticed this much. Because of my privilege. I see white faces like mine all over outdoor media. Crowding our parks. Plastered all over hiking, camping, and climbing ads. 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚. Pandora's Promise is revealed!

Pandora's Promise is a controversial new film about the potential for nuclear power to be a valid option. I really found this film interesting but I think it's sole purpose is to just get people thinking. With the time restraints of a movie there is only so much one person can cover about such a big topic and I feel that's where a lot of the criticism will come from sadly. 

With issues such as this people want the facts, the science. But, I saw this film more as provocative, just getting you to think about something in a new way without trying to throw all these hard facts at you. 

Reading a bit more into this film, all the people involved were said to be anti-nuclear power when they started out on this film, which adds a unique component to it. As the film went on they said they started to realize all they were taught to believe wasn't necessarily true. 

This film is a great start to investigating the option of nuclear power. Just opening the door to nuclear power seemed to be his goal, which I believe was accomplished.
