Its now 5 years since my first solo exhibition. XLA was very important to me and continues to be years on. It’s odd thinking about opening night this time so long ago, how different everyone was, and how much we’ve all grown. I recently spoke with the owner of my painting “rage/Compressed Dreams” about how she continues to revisit that painting, especially over the last year. The painting itself was about having moments and dreams taken from you, being held back through no fault of your own, to change then adapt with creativity and do it with a positive outlook; and our conversation has stuck with me. It’s a very different and difficult world now, in comparison to 2016. When I think about that time in which I created that particular artwork, in 2013, I was in such a low point and I would have said that I would never have recovered. I was in a particularly bad place. That way of feeling wasn’t to stay with me forever, and I don’t believe that we won’t collectively all recover from this moment in time. This pandemic has been horrific on so many levels to people of all different background, but there is hope in vaccines and hopefully an end to harsh lockdowns. As much as it feels like we are having time ripped from us in many ways, all we can do is make sure the time we have, once it’s safe to do, is spent well. It’s been one whole year since I exhibited my third project, second solo show Change. Still very happy with the outcome from that show, it’s response and the amount of people who connected with its themes. It was the most cathartic body of work I’d produced (at the time) and having people embrace it was a joy. Thank you to anyone who came along, shared the work online and got yourself a part of it. Grateful is an understatement. Happy to report I’m working on two new projects: Brittle - a photography only series based on false fragility, an exploration on what it means to put up a front when anything of the kind is so easily broken. Immunoglobulin Cash Money - a mixed media feast that’s a darker extension of XLA’s medical themes. It also looks into paranoia and living with a lifelong medical condition and what that means in the world as it currently stands.
