Q: Is fresh produce healthier than canned?
A: Both fresh and canned produce are great sources of essential nutrients! Overall, fresh produce is typically the preferred choice because it tends to have better taste and texture, more nutritional value, and fewer additives, and it promotes eating in season — meaning more sustainable, cheaper, nutritious, and fresh options. However, there are definitely benefits to eating canned produce.
For example, canned produce has a longer shelf life, can be a less expensive option, is often softer and therefore easier to chew, and has less fiber so it’s easier to digest. When buying canned produce, aim for options with less sugar, less sodium, and fewer preservatives.
When choosing between fresh and canned, think about when you plan on using that item. If you intend to use something that same week, buying fresh may make more sense. It also doesn’t hurt to keep a diverse selection of forms on hand — fresh, canned, and frozen produce. This can help you eat more fruits and veggies overall!

Q:What is the keto diet, and why did it become so popular?A:The “keto diet” has taken on many forms over the years! A true ketogenic diet is a very high fat, low protein, low carb diet. About 90% of calories come from fat on this diet, which is pretty extreme! The only population where we see any health benefit to following a true keto diet is in children with epilepsy, where it has been shown to decrease seizure frequency.

Most of what we see or hear about is a modified keto. This rose to popularity in the 1990s with the Atkins diet. This modified approach, which ballparks macros to about 60% to 70% fat, 20% to 30% protein, and 5% to 10% carbs, is what most people will be aiming for when following keto.
The idea behind this higher fat approach is using a different type of fuel for our bodies, called ketones, rather than carbs — which are our preferred energy source. It became popular as a weight loss diet because it works … in the short term, at least! With a high fat diet, we are likely to feel fuller for longer and eat fewer calories overall.
However, long-term health benefits, including sustained weight loss, haven’t been supported, and keto may not be safe for everyone. There will likely be a significant reduction of nutrient variety, and it may increase some people’s risk of high cholesterol. Since this diet is such a drastic change to most people’s food groups, it’s important to work with your physician and dietitian to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients your body requires to function at its best.

Q: Are there any benefits to buying organic food?

A: Ultimately, there are some benefits to buying organic food products and produce. However, buying organic isn’t essential for good health. I recommend purchasing whichever type of produce gets you and your family to eat more fruits and veggies!
Here are some things to keep in mind when deciding whether to buy organic food:
There’s not enough evidence to confirm that organic produce is healthier (i.e., has more antioxidants and vitamins) than conventional produce.
Just because something is labeled “organic” doesn’t automatically mean it is healthy. The “organic” label means the product is free from artificial chemicals/synthetic pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and GMOs. However, looking at the nutrition label regarding saturated fats, sodium, and added sugar is still important.
Non-organic products are safe for consumption. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) does annual pesticide residue testing and finds almost all pesticide residue samples below the tolerance levels, which are strict standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Organic farming can help decrease the risks of short-term and long-term consequences of chemical exposure to which farmers can be subjected. Due to elevated exposure levels of pesticides, farmers are at higher risk of consequences than consumers.
We also see that organic farming benefits the environment in some ways, including by improving soil composition, improving air quality in rural areas, and decreasing groundwater contamination. However, the sustainability of these practices can be worrisome as our population continues to grow, and organic farming tends to produce fewer crops and uses more land.
Final thoughts:
If organic produce, meats, or other products are on sale, if they’re affordable to you, or if you prefer them, go for it! If you prefer to stick with conventional products, that is absolutely OK too!
If you are worried about pesticide exposure or environmental impacts, go halfsies! Buy organic lettuces or berries but conventional bananas and avocados.
If you have space to grow your produce, try it out. Nothing is more convenient (and rewarding) than going to your backyard and harvesting your goods!

Q: What should I eat after food poisoning?
A: Food poisoning is usually caused by bacteria-contaminated foods. Think: undercooked meat, eggs, unpasteurized dairy products, shellfish, and unwashed fruits and veggies. But it can also be due to eating foods that contain poisonous toxins, including certain mushroom species. Some of the telltale signs are stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
The very first thing you want to do is throw away the food that upset your stomach in the first place so that no one else gets sick too!
A few hours after the onset of symptoms, you’ll want to try to reintroduce fluids to your system. Food poisoning can cause severe dehydration, which can lead to serious complications. Start with small sips of water, electrolytes/sports drinks, broth, or non-caffeinated carbonated drinks, which can help settle your stomach. Once you are able to manage some liquids, start incorporating small amounts of bland foods that are easy to digest and low in both fat and fiber.
My post-food-poisoning go-to foods include some chicken broth (to help with hydration and protein intake), saltine crackers, and occasionally a bubbly water. Once I’m able to keep that all down, I like to have an electrolytes drink and some chicken noodle soup.
I recommend keeping a few of your go-tos on hand to prepare for the dreaded occurrences of food poisoning. To cut down on your risk of getting sick from food at home, make sure to store your food appropriately and practice good food safety habits.
Most food poisoning cases subside within 12 to 48 hours. If your symptoms persist or if you experience blood in your vomit, a high fever, or lingering dehydration symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention.
