Death’s Door by Acid Nerve

What a great game.

TLDR: The gameplay is fun, the pacing is fun, getting lost can be fun.

Death's Door is an isometric game in the spirit of Souls-like Zelda with Metroidvania elements.

Acid Nerve made Death's Door, who also made Titan Souls. It's great to see how they've grown as developers.

 In Death's Door, you'll find yourself a crow on a mission, killing enemies with a simple yet rewarding combat system of dodging, rolling, charging up your magic, and slicing enemies before you.  I do want to state, this game is not easy, if you played Titan Souls, you'll know Acid Nerve's games are not easy. Death’s Door was difficult and coupling that with doing exercise every time I lost led to a fun experience albeit challenging.  

Get used to seeing that, cause you going to die a lot. 

You play a cute little crow/ reaper, who lost a soul he was supposed to obtain and embarked on a quest to harvest three additional souls in an attempt to right the crow's wrong (at least I think that's what happened).

 You as the crow can use the world as your weapon as well. Enemies harm each other if you get them to cause fratricide which is always a plus in games in my opinion. It makes the player’s choice carry weight and raises the stakes.

 I forgot what it's like to get lost in a game world.

 A large portion of the game, I spent wondering, not sure where to go, and adding the fact that there is no in-game map added to me getting lost. But that’s the beauty in the game, so many games nowadays hold your hand by providing a compass and map instructing the player where to go. Not Death's Door though, boom, you just wonder, looking for where to go. You get a new tool, time to revisit old sections of the world and see if you can access anything new. It can be a bit confusing at times because you're not sure if you're backtracking since the world is so big and confusing. But if you continue to power through, you'll eventually find out where you're supposed to go.

 The Art Design in the game is phenomenal.

 The main hub world's color pallet is minimal at first but changes over time thanks to budding little creatures and trinkets you find in the world. The worlds you explore, from snowy peaks, luscious forest, and somber cemeteries are bursting with colors making a nice contrast to the bureaucracy of the world our little crow exists in. Also, special s/o to game's magic, especially the "spirit bomb" in this game, if done in the right place, the world's particles become part of your spirit bomb. That's what makes this game so special, it's the little touches that make it shine. Throwing little fireballs makes you feel like you are throwing Hadokens left and right.

 The game’s developers crafted a lived-in world, thanks to all the different architecture, many characters, and worn structures found throughout the world adding personality and mystery to the environments. I'd often ask myself, I wonder why this walkway is so broken, your these doors hanging on a hinge.

 A few negatives: The bosses were easier than some of the game's additional bosses (to power up your magic spells) or mid-bosses.

 The lack of a map isn't a deal-breaker, but man does it make traversal confusing at times, especially since you're relying on your memory to find new places.

 Overall, I recommend this game, I died several times but each death taught me something new and when you figure out how to fight enemies and their patterns, it becomes a deadly dance as you pepper the floor with blood spewed by fallen foes if not your own.

Gains Gaming

Gains Gaming is a gaming alternative style which incorporates working out and gaming. Every time the player dies, they perform reps of an exercise (you get to choose the exercise).  For instance, I am currently playing Death's Door, a fun game by Acid Nerve (they also created titan souls). Every time I die, I do some type exercise, be it: 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, 10 pull-ups (or attempt to)..etc. With Gains Gaming, there is no true loss because even though you lose, through "Gains Gaming", you gain. Like the video game characters we play as, we must continue to become stronger to face any challenge we meet.

Stuck on a boss, every time you lose, do some exercise.  Gamers may feel intense stress when gaming, especially when losing and not doing well, leading to feelings of hopelessness, stress and/or futility which may cause your body to release cortisol into your blood stream. How many times have you said to yourself, "Ugh, I don’t know if I can beat this boss."

Gains Gaming seeks to incorporate healthy physical activity into gaming. We know that exercise is proven to improve one's mood via a release of endorphins. Physical activity may also assist in improving your mood, and acumen leading to out-of-the-box thinking which may be just the tool you need to vanquish the foe or foes impeding your progress.  

Want to try? All you have to do is, commit to performing exercise after each player death. Start off small, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, and try to incorporate other exercises if you get bored of push-ups or sit-ups. In the past, I've incorporated an ab-wheel, resistance bands, and dumb bells. Body weight is always a good weight to use for exercise.

Gains Gaming works well with single-player games where a player can die in the game world. You can also incorporate Gains Gaming into all other gaming genres. Playing multi-player games or fighting games? But how Sway? Did you just lose your match? Do some push-ups. Did you fail to break into the top 10 of the death match? Do some sit-ups. Did you just lose your run in a rouge-like/lite? Do some burpees. 

If you're like me, sometimes you struggle to work-out. Gains Gaming incorporates working out and gaming, to not only better yourself as a gamer but as a person.

Yeah, it seems like it's happening. 

However, If Democrats can deliver some semblance of a beneficial bill via the Budget reconciliation package, it will give Americans a taste of functional government. Something US citizens haven't had in over the last four 1/2 years.

Imagine a world where the Gov’t works to address the needs of the many over the needs of the Uber wealthy. 

Crazy idea I know, but hear me out, give Americans a taste of what gov’t can do if it works for them, and makes their lives better and they’ll be hooked like I was to pizza the first time I tried some. 

You want free community college, gotta get more senators elected in 2021. You want comprehensive medicad expansion to include dental, vision and hearing, need two more senators...you get the point. 

If the Democrats tank this deal, good luck in the Midterms.

Word to the wise:  Pass the reconciliation package, run on its accomplishments and pick up seats in the house, senate and boom, catering to Senator’s Sinema and Manchin will be a thing of the past.
