Brendon's eyes snap open to early-morning darkness, breath barely escaping the tightness in his chest as he gasps for oxygen. Sweat is cooling in the crook of his neck and behind his knees, his eyes blinking in futile effort to erase the images still playing behind his lids, the night terror grasping tight to his subconscious.
He can barely make out the light fixture in the middle of his room in the grey-blue lighting, his water-logged sight distorting the images as he wipes at the sweat at his brow. His body is trembling and his skin is crawling with the disconnected fragments of images playing behind his lids with every blink, and he tries to keep his eyes open until they burn to shut them out.
It's the second night this week that he's awoken to a racing heartbeat and tears leaking from the corners of his closed eyes, but it's only Wednesday. His unconscious mind is plagued with strange dreams; with images of out-of-body experiences he has no control over, awful trips and even worse come-downs directly correlating with his unconscious-mind.
He nearly vomits at the metallic taste in his mouth, stomach clenching tight as he rolls unsteadily to the edge of his bed, fingers gripped tight to the woven trim under his tips while he gags, blinking red numbers of his alarm clock silently mocking him.
He barely managed to capture an hour of sleep, but it's the longest he's had in a single night in weeks.
Dropping his head to his forearm, his body trembles as he slowly calms down, salty tears trailing between the dips in his fingers, soaking into the white sheet beneath, mantra of "I'm okay" and "I don't need help, I'm fine" battling the pull of his addiction and losing the lopsided war.
"One line isn't anything," he reasons to himself, nose pressed into the fabric of his shirt, heartbeat increasing steadily in anticipation of his venom; of his lifeline, "Just enough to get me to sleep, that's all."
