“Are you in the Navy?” Lynette responded crossly, eyeing the man as if she couldn’t quite believe that he had the nerve to speak to her in such a sarcastic manner. “In all my tine in this country, I don’t believe Americans think masquerading as a soldier is acceptable.”

“Uh, no, I’m not. And no, they don’t. It’s called Stolen Valor. It’s kind of a big deal.” Miles retorted somewhat curtly. He hadn’t lived in Cendre Hollow long but coming into the town while in a relationship with someone from a reigning family meant that he quickly figured out the hierarchy that ruled the people who lived there. And the Grandiose family seemed important for whatever reason rich families in small towns were so. Which meant marrying into them like Lynette had made you some sort of royalty. But Miles was raised on a farm in Virginia, where monarchies weren’t as common. This was America, after all. He owed the Grandiose’s no more respect than they gave him. “I can look up the number for the National Guard or something if you’d like to report me.”

Of course having worked in medicine since the late 60′s, she understood the exhaustion that some workers faced. But she expected a bit of contrition when blatantly caught in the act. “I was out for lunch-” She didn’t need to eat of course, but she did need a damn break from her work sometimes. “-and since I ran into you I figured I’d let you know that they’ve been trying to page you for the last hour and a half.”

Miles jolted even further as Annette’s words settled, the blanch on his face evident as he responded. “Fuck. Are you serious?” He inquired, eyes widening as he moved to check his pager before she could answer. “What’s going on? Air transpo?”

“Miles McLoughlin are you sleepin’ on the job again?” Magnolia demanded in a teasing tone, planting a hand on her hip. Miles was someone that she was still very fond of, despite the ah- unconventional way their relationship had ended. “I saw you over here and I just knew you were slacking again.”

Magnolia’s recurring presence in Miles’ life post their break up (which he couldn’t truly remember the cause of) was still something that he was getting used to, he thought as he blinked slowly at the woman before jerking his hand over to click the unlock button on the door. Still, he’d have to get used to it. As long as he stayed in Cendre Hollow. And in the orbit of her life via his connections to her family. 

“Aren’t you a peach?” He asked as his eyes darted down to the cups in her hands. He needed a coffee.”Tired of sittin’ behind that desk up on the dementia unit or something?”

“Real comforting to see that you’re all doing important work down at the hospital,” James replied dryly from his squad car as he watched Miles shoot up. There was no teasing to his tone, but it was evident enough once you got to know James that he put little care into what happened around town so long as he didn’t have to deal with it directly. 

Miles glanced out through his own vehicle’s window and into that of the sheriff’s, trying to read the older man t no avail. “It’s grueling work, sheriff. You should know that better than anybody. Gotta take a break in between saving lives.”

“The care you put into your job is evident,” Lynette retorted as she stopped mid-stroll, looking up from her Blackberry as the man spoke. It wasn’t hard to put two and two together to deduct he’d been sleeping on the job, even if her focus hadn’t initially been trained on the man. “What’s a medal I could put you up for?”

Even if Miles was inept when it came to reading sarcasm, it was still clear enough that the woman’s tone was less than genuine. He didn’t know the woman, but he felt like he knew of her from around town. Still, he didn’t like criticism of his work ethic from strangers. “Medal of Valor, probably. Honor? Navy Cross? Not super sure what they give out for what.”

Miles shot up from where he’d been lounging comfortably, eyes refocusing to the world as he tried to ID whoever had caught him sleeping in the passenger seat of his assigned ambulance. He’d been on the tail end of his lunch, he remembered, and had decided to close his eyes just for a second while he was still parked right off Main street.
