the stranger things i hate about you
chapter eight: a date?
| 1358 words | 10 things i hate about you!steddie |
The past couple weeks Steve has not separated with his Walkman, constantly listening to the songs Eddie has given him. Especially after the little moment they shared in the classroom. They have been staying up all night, chatting about the music, and the lyrics, and Steve was surprised to find out that Munson writes the songs himself. Somehow they never had to worry about a dead silence between them, there was always something to talk about, and it kind of scares Steve. He hasn't had a friend like that in a long time.
'Steve, you're giggling at your phone like a school girl, stop it. It's creepy.' Robin winces looking at the boy sat on the bed next to her, a magazine open on her knees. Robin's back rests against the headboard, while Steve is sitting at the edge, facing the door.
'No I'm not!' he exclaims and turns to face Robin, his eyebrows scrunched but a smile still persistent.
'What happened to your face?' she asks, getting up and poking his cheek.
'Oh, get off my ass. And I'm not giggling, it was a manly laugh. I got a-'
'Funny message from Eddie,' Robin interrupted, imitating Steve's voice, 'Yeah, I know. He's all you're talking about.'
'Well, you wanted me to get close to him. You should be happy I'm doing such a great job.' Steve sits up proudly. But what he doesn't mention to Robin is that he starts thinking of Eddie as a friend. A really good friend. They've gotten closer lately; much closer than Steve's gotten with anyone in a long time.
'Well, I'm sure it's more than just a 'job' for you.' Robin mumbles under her breath loud enough for the boy to hear her
'What is that supposed to mean?' Steve turns around to her completely, his face not so bright anymore. His eyes are squinted, staring Robin down.
Robin reaches out to Steve, grabbing his hands. The magazine slides off her legs. 'Stevie, you are the softest guy I've ever met. And trust me, I've met many.' She squeezes his hands in a reassuring gesture, sending him a smile.
'Well, I'm not being much of a softie right now.' Steve replies, his tone darker, as he glances at his phone. The screen lit up with a notification from Eddie.
'Steve, can I ask you a serious question?' Robin's shift in attitude scares Steve slightly, but he nods. 'Don't freak out. I'm not sure where you stand...' Well, that sentence definitely makes Steve freak out. 'Do you have a crush on Eddie by any chance?'
Steve's eyes widen and heart speeds up. He can feel his cheeks warm up, turn a pinkish colour, but he tries to ignore it, as unrecognisable sounds leave his mouth. Finally he manages to let a word out, 'What?'
Robin sighs. 'Steve, I'm not picking on you or anything. Just asking if you're attracted to Eddie.'
'No,' Steve replies immediately, but then gets all quiet and lets out a nervous 'No?' He doesn't know what to think. Now that Robin's words are stuck in his head, he's remembering all the times during basketball practice, where he could feel his pulse speed up slightly when another boy got close to him. Or when Billy Hargrove grinded against him when they were doing one on one. His cheeks brighten up with an even stronger shade of pink.
'Well, I guess I got my answer.' Robin lets go of his hands, leaning back on the headboard. She grabs the magazine, reading through the pages casually, as if she didn't just flick Steve's world upside down.
'This is too confusing.' Steve drops his face in his hands.
'The only reason I mentioned it, is because it could complicate a lot...'
Steve looks at Robin confused at first but then remembers. Robin pays him to hang out with Eddie. 'I'm not into him.' Steve retorts, but he doesn't sound so confident anymore.
Robin doesn't fully believe him, she's seen how Steve lights up when a message from the boy with curly hair comes through. She doesn't ask any more. If he wants to be in denial, there's not much she can do about it. Maybe that's for the better. 'Okay. On that note. I almost forgot, the payment for the last meet up.' She reaches for her bag that's settled by her bed and takes her wallet out. She passes Steve the money, which he takes reluctantly. She sends him a look, one that he interprets as 'You can stop whenever you want.' He smiles.
'Thanks, Robin.'
'Always, Harrington.'
———————————————————————
It's the evening when Steve gets back home, his thoughts still a mumbled mess from the conversation with Robin. She never mentioned the topic again after that talk, but it was on both their minds. But now that he's back home, the kitchen and small lounge so cold, and quiet, it feels even more lonely than usual. Especially after hanging out with Robin earlier today. Steve puts his phone on the coffee table and makes his way to the bathroom. The phone vibrates on the surface, device set on silent mode.
Steve takes much longer than normal in the shower. Almost as if he's trying to wash away the confusing feelings swarming through his body. He lets his thoughts get lost under the hot water cascading on his head. He holds himself against the wall, water drips off his hair, his eyes closed even though the water doesn't reach them. Thoughts of Eddie and Robin's philosophies cross his mind, and he can't help but agree with her. This is getting dangerous.
Steve doesn't realise when an hour passes. Goosebumps form on his shoulders as the water cools down and that's what shakes him awake. He turns the shower off and gets out, taking his time. He dries himself with a blank white towel, gets dressed and leaves the bathroom, making his way straight to the lounge to get his phone. The device lights up as soon as he reaches out for it, messages from Eddie stands out amongst other notifications.
target:
dude
this is gon sound so weird
but i need ur help
like asap
you there
its been an hour
and ik ur not sleepin
steeve
stevie
harrington
Steve smiles, seeing how the boy spammed his phone in a very Eddie manner. But the last message makes Steve's heart stop, breath getting shallower.
target:
pretty boy?
Steve doesn't know how to reply to that message. It's like his mind short circuited, mouth gone dry. Is Eddie flirting with him? They did get closer recently, but that's much closer than he thought. His fingers hover over the keyboard, hesitant how to reply to the curly haired boy.
steve:
sorry was in the shower
long day
whats up
Well, that might have been a little bit too casual. A reply comes in almost immediately.
target:
are you ok?
Steve feels a pain shoot through his chest. No, nothing's okay is what Steve, wish he could reply, but then he'd have to explain everythign to Eddie. Instead, he goes into Eddie's contact info and changes the name, target started to bother him. Then he replies.
steve:
yeah dw
just a lot happened
with my friend
He added the last message quickly, to not seem like it was something he made up. Even though he did. It's so much easier to say his problems are his friend's problems. People stop prying when they hear that. Steve underestimated Eddie.
THE pretty boy:
ur sure?
i'll listen even if its abt ur friend
"Shit," Steve whispers and sits down on his couch, placing his face in his hand. He can feel how hot his face is, and realises how deep into this shit he is. "I'm fucked."
steve:
yeah im sure
ill keep that in mind tho
thank you
u did need help with something though
THE pretty boy:
ah yes! i alr forgot
go on a date with me
Steve stops breathing. As if breathing is unnatural for him, Steve just holds his breath, eyes wide and cheeks getting even warmer. He replies, hands shaky.
steve:
what?

“Look, Spencer. I probably have nothing against you personally. But I've just been conned into another three months of probationary minimum wage because your boss at the Bureau decided he wanted rid of you for a month or two. We can be civil, but we're not… we're not friends, Spencer.” You stepped back and let out another sigh as you forced the words to stand between you. “Okay. I'll stay out of your way.” “Great. Looking forward to it.” “Sure. Me too.”

Could you make a kiss headcanon about Castiel or Lysander like you did for Nathaniel? I love your headcanons ❤️
Kisses with Lysander - HSL
N/A : Hii ! thanks for your support darling, here's your request, I hope you like it 💕
𝙷𝚘𝚠 𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚔𝚒𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚜 :
It would often be small pecks to show his affection and appreciation at random moments
But then this would grow into a more passionate kiss
He has this habits of cupping Candy’s cheek while kissing her
He also has this way of kissing Candy so softly that it makes her shiver
The kind of kisses that feel as light as a feather and yet, that feel so intimate
It always reflects a ton of emotions because Lysander is very good at expressing himself through his actions rather than saying it out loud (he’s better with his words with paper and ink)
𝚆𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚑𝚎’𝚍 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚎 𝚔𝚒𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚍 :
He likes it when Candy kisses his cheek
He finds it very sweet and even though it is a simple gesture, it shows her appreciation of him so that’s a yes
Unlike Nathaniel (as said in the 1st post of this little series), he’s not embarrassed by it
If he’s shirtless for whatever reason (but you probably guessed which one), he loves it when Candy leaves a trail of kisses across his chest
It’s a turn on for him
Of course he loves she goes for his lips (I mean it’s a classic but it’s certainly a way-to-go)
𝚆𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚑𝚎’𝚍 𝚔𝚒𝚜𝚜 𝙲𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚢 :
Her hands. All the time. (I won’t argue with anyone about this)
Palm kisses <3 this is so cute
Also offering his hand whenever she’s sat and has to stand up and then proceed to kiss her knuckles (loverboyyy)
He likes to kiss her nape while he’s holding her from behind (bonus point if he was putting on her a necklace he offered her)
Basically kissing her whole body during intimate time (that includes between her legs oops)
Kissing her breast and thighs also (could spend hours on it, I rest my case)
𝚆𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚠𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚢 𝚔𝚒𝚜𝚜 :
At school, it’s their greeting (the day hasn’t begin if their lips haven’t met each other)
Lysander doesn’t care of people’s opinion (yet, that doesn’t mean he’ll make out with Candy in the hallways 'cause even if he's not shy or anything, he's a pretty private person still) so he won’t be bothered by kissing her whenever he feels like it (or get kissed by her whenever she wants too)
The school garden is their make-out spot (this or the basement. Maybe even both)
I said it in the first part, but sometime it just happens at random moments (for example when Candy do something he finds adorable or when he just feel like Candy needs a little reminder that he loves her)
There we go, I hoped you enjoyed it !
I have been logged out of my account (and I had forgot my password so this was a bit of a shit show lol) so the requests are a bit late to be posted but it’s on the way 💕

the stranger things i hate about you
chapter seven: the connection
| 1,235 words | 10 things i hate about you!steddie |
a/n: finally we’re back, one more chapter left and we’re caught up with what i have written months ago, so din’t be surprised if the style of writing changes with chapter nine. enjoy :)
The past week has been a bit hectic for Steve. His everyday routine has changed ever since he got closer to Eddie; he was in Steve's thoughts at every point of the day. When shopping, cooking, driving around to get some fresh air. Eddie was everywhere. Still is. Steve is not sure if it's because of the cassettes and CD that the curly-head sent him, or the fact that Steve has a weird reaction to Eddie's singing voice. It's different to his everyday tone which is quite smooth and playful. But when Eddie is singing, his voice is more rough and serious, quite stern actually. It makes Steve wonder what Eddie's voice sound like in other situations.
Steve stops in his tracks in the middle of the school hallway, his hand holding a backpack that has now slipped off his shoulder and would be laying on the floor if Steve hadn't caught it. Mouth slightly agape, eyes a bit wider looking into one point in front of the boy, a streak of sweat going donw his temple. What is he thinking about? He looks around, panicking if anyone has seen his little moment of shock. He doesn't want any stupid questions from anyone, he's fine. It's just the usual lack of sleep due to his reoccurent nightmares, especially since these have gotten worse since he's agreed to help Robin. A ping coming from his phome awakens Steve, so he reaches for the device, the screen lighting up with a message from no other than Eddie.
the target:
what the fuck are you doing?
Steve is beyond confused, re-reading the message countless times, thinking he might have misread it, but the contents still stay the same. He looks up from the phone and looks to his right, almost as if feeling someone's eyes on him. There he is, looking at his through the window the class has into the corridor. Eddie's sat on the table in an empty classroom, a cigarette in his hand, eyebrows furrowed and phone on his lap. He looks... Nevermind.
Steve puts his phone in the pocket of his light jeans and opens the door to the classroom where Eddie is sat. He enters the room and closes the door behind him, dragging his feet as he approaches the curly-head.
'Hey,' Steve speaks up first, catching brown eyes of his 'friend', who slowly puts a cigarette in his mouth and inhales the smoke.
'Hi,' Eddie replies, a cloud of smoke leaving his mouth as he does. Steve cannot help but watch as Eddies lips close around the cigarette, the action making Steve take a breath in. 'What was that?'
Eddie's question breaks Steve out of his questionable thoughts, 'Uh, what was what?' he asks back.
Eddie points to the corridor with the hand that has the cigarette in it, Steve following with his eyes like a cat looking at a laser beam. Enthralled by the way the cigarette is placed in between Eddie's fingers, the way the rings are hugging his thin digits.
I'm going crazy Steve thinks.
Eddie sees how out of it Steve is. 'Nevermind dude,' he says, looks away and puts the cigarette back in his mouth, just holding it between his teeth.
An uncomfortable silence forms between the two as they both sit on the desk in the empty classroom. Eddie nibs on the object in his mouth, while Steve plays with his fingers, not sure how to start a conversation with the already distanced boy.
Eddie feels the slight shaking of the desk, and from the corner of his eye he sees the way Harrington's leg shakes, as if he's impatient, but his guess is the boy is just anxious. He used to be like that too. Eddie reached his hand out and places it on Steve's knee, still looking away from the blonde. Steve's heart speeds up, but he also seems to relax at the same time. His leg stops shaking, shoulders slouch slightly.
'Sorry,' Steve finally breaks the silence, 'I just get like that sometimes, it can be pretty annoying.' He chuckles quietly, but it's a kind of awkward laugh.
'It's not annoying. Anxiety is awful and physical contact was helpful for me so...' He stops mid sentence, his thoughts going off somewhere. 'How long have you had it?' he continues.
'Uh.' A pause. Steve's not sure how to phrase his thoughts. 'You know the guy that jumped off the school roof?'
'Yeah?'
'Well, it was kind of my fault.' Silence erupts once again, Steve's head drops down, not meeting Eddie's eyes.
'What, did you push him off?' A small laugh escapes Eddie, the boy trying to break the tension.
'No!' Steve doesn't pick up on the joke, abruptly looking up at the curly-head next to him. Their eyes meet, Steve hypnotised by the brown of his irises. Eddie is not really sure what's happening right now. Why are they even having this conversation? 'I-' Steve starts off again, but stops himself immediately. How can he tell the person that he's trying to befriend that he took part in bullying the kid who committed suicide not long after. 'Me, Tommy and some other guys were bullying him, everyday, even on the day when he jumped. We- We were complete dicks and I can't forgive myself for what we've done to him.' he says everything so fast, he's out of breath by the time he's done. Steve spills his heart out possibly for the first time since he has isolated himself from everyone. And to Eddie of all people.
'Wow, Harrington. That's fucked up.' Steve feels his face lose its colour. 'But it's not only your fault. Tommy and others are as much to blame. What did you even do to him?' Eddie asks.
'Well, I laughed with Tommy at him, repeated some things Tommy said and... And well-'
Eddie interrupts him, 'Steve. You need to learn to forgive yourself. I'm sure that guy was cursing Tommy more than you, as we all did. I don't know about others, but personally, I always saw Tommy being the one who stirred up the shit, the rest of you didn't stop it, and sometimes even encouraged him. But that doesn't mean you can let it bother you, it's not healthy.' As Eddie shares his feelings on the matter, his hand squeezes on Steve's leg. The blonde just now realises that Eddie's hand has gone slightly higher than it was before. He tenses up slightly, feeling his face warm up. Eddie sees Steve straighten up and looks at the boy's leg, seeing that he's still maintaining physical contact with him. He mumbles a swear word, takes his hand off Steve's thigh and pushes a lock of hair behind his ear, his cheeks burning slightly.
'Thank you, Munson.' Steve looks back at him, and smiles. His smile falters quickly and he sighs, 'I know I already said it, but-'
'For fuck's sake. I swear, if you apologise once more, I will smack you.' Eddie butts in, hopping off the table, the cigarette now barely burning in his hand. He puts it off on a bin by the wall and walks up to the door. His hand's on handle, when he turns back to face Steve. 'Don't know though, you might enjoy that.' He flashes a smile and leaves Steve sill sitting on the desk with a shit-eating grin not leaving his face.

the stranger things i hate about you
chapter six: best hangover medicine
| 1,136 words | 10 things i hate about you!steddie |
Steve definitely drunk too much last night, the bitter taste of beer still on his tongue and memories of the events in the club fuzzy. The boy is sat downstairs on the stool by the kitchen countertop, holding his head, a glass of aspirin in front of him. He’s rubbing his temples, the sound of a notification stinging his eardrums.
‘For fuck’s sake.’ He swears under his breath and reaches for the phone, the light from the screen too bright in the room swallowed by the darkness. He squints his eyes and blindly tries to turn the brightness down, which doesn’t go well for him. He takes a moment to get used to the light and reads the notification showing a message from Robin.
boss:
what happened last night?
The memories of the night at the club suddenly washing over him like a waterfall.
When Eddie started walking away from him, Steve followed suit and tried to stop the boy, attempting to convince him of the sincerity of his words. Eddie was very reluctant and accurately so, after all that Steve and his mates have done, but seeing Steve’s expression had him thinking. His eyes were a bit more narrow, awaiting Eddie’s next words. His hair ruffled, probably by the drunk strangers Steve had to walk past to get to the curly-head. His lips slightly open, as if he wanted to say something, hands slightly shaky on his sides. He was nervous.
Anything else past that requires Steve to do too much thinking, his head pounding, it was like a bomb ticking away, waiting to detonate. He gives up for now and messages Robin back.
steve:
idk, dont remember much
why? did something happen
A few seconds later he gets a reply, amazed with how quick the girl can type.
boss:
well, ik someone whos friends with him and they said that when trying to talk to him, he would only smile and say that hed keep it to himself
Steve’s lips form a flat line, concerned with what he must have done. When he was popular he had drank a lot, and it’d take a lot to get him at least tipsy. But now he was out of touch, and mixing alcohol has been a bad choice.
Steve looked at the glass filled with whiskey and winced slightly. He looked back at Eddie, sat beside him, a wide, toothy smile was occupying his face.
‘C’mon! The big Steve Harrington won’t drink whiskey?’ Eddie teased, knowing full well that Steve will do it. That’s the kind of person he was, or at least that’s what the metal head believed.
‘Oh, get off my ass Munson.’ Steve shook his head and downed the drink, alcohol was burning in his throat. ‘That’s awful.’
Eddie bursted out laughing, leaning back so far he almost fell off the stool. ‘You’ve never drank whiskey? You disappoint me Steven.’ A low giggle escaped him.
‘Why do you call me Steven? You know it’s Steve, you literally said my name earlier.’
Eddie stopped giggling. He looked Steve straight into eyes, and slowly smiled at him. ‘I like to see you flustered. Call it payback.’ And he took another sip of his drink.
Steve gets up from the chair, the memory so fresh in his mind, but so distant at the same time. It feels almost as if they have had been friends for a very long time, which couldn’t be further from truth. Could he even call them friends now?
A knock at the door wakes Steve up from his contemplating, his head turns towards the little hallway. His eyebrows scrunch up and he walks over. Looking through the peephole he sees a courier, holding a box. Steve opens the door.
‘Good morning. I got a package for Steve Harrington.’ The man smiles at Steve.
‘Uh, yeah that’s me. But I didn’t order anything.’ Steve replies, more as a question than a statement.
‘Oh. Uh, it says this is from Mr. Munson. Does that ring a bell?’ Steve’s eyes widen slightly. Eddie? What would he send? And how does he know Steve’s address?
‘Yeah, that’s my- friend.’ Steve takes the package from the man, bids him farewell and closes the door.
Back in the kitchen, Steve puts the box on the countertop and opens it with a pocket knife that was in a drawer. The opened box includes a CD and a couple tapes, as well as a piece of paper. He reaches for the paper and unravels it to reveal a letter.
Sorry dude, I’m old-fashioned. You wanted to listen to some stuff we talked about so I sent it to you. The CD is of my band and the tapes have a bit of Metallica, Iron Maiden and some Dio. I do expect to have them back, you got my address ;)
Eddie
Tapes? Music? Steve is beyond confused not able to register that part of the night. He takes the CD out, the picture at the front clearly self-printed, so the CD must have been burned by Eddie. The name ‘Corroded Coffin’ spaced out at the top of the cover, with bats surrounding a man below the name. Steve remembers the black van in front of the club yesterday.
‘Of course that was your car.’ Steve snickers at the thought and puts the CD back into the box to search through the rest of the ‘gifts’. At the rock bottom, he finds a cassette player with a sticky note saying ‘Cause I doubt you own one’. Steve shakes his head in amusement, taking the recorder and box with him back to his room.
Steve situates himself on the bed, the box carefully placed next to him, cassette player on his lap. He starts looking through the collection Eddie shared with him, but the singular CD in between the cassettes keeps catching his eye. Steve puts the cassette player on the bed table, grabs the laptop from the desk that’s next to the bed and turns it on. After a moment of hesitation, Steve takes the Corroded Coffin CD and puts it into his laptop, a folder popping up on the screen with a couple songs burned into it. He presses a random one, not sure where to start and a sound of guitar echoes in his ear. Drums come in and at the same time Eddie’s voice joins in. Steve feels his heart clench listening to Eddie singing, his voice sounding slightly different to what he was used to hearing at school, or even last night. The feeling goes away as quickly as it appears leaving Steve slightly on the edge as he continues to listen to the band’s music. He could maybe get used to this genre. And maybe he’d get used to Eddie and his company.
Just maybe.

i think i’m in love with you
in which Eddie believes that gay men can be friends with straight guys without there being any subtext to their relationship. duh he’s got a friendship like that! well, had. guess he was proven wrong.
part 2
read part 1
a/n: soooo i think i’m in love with you won in the votes, therefore i deliver to you the rest of the story! in my head this is the finished product, but in near future i could probably write shorts of some adventures they have and parts of their journey :) also i wanted to thank everyone who voted, hope you enjoy 🫶🏻
| 1869 words | modern!steddie | bestfriend!steddie |
Our lips move in a rushed manner, but it’s nothing too heated. It’s more like we’re too scared to go too far, as if we’d cross the invisible line that exists between friends. Many friendships have kept going after kissing in the spur of the moment, and I’m sure our will too. This is just to prove him wrong. He can’t be in love with me and that’s what I’m showing him. Except, his hands let go of my face and take a trail down my neck, chest and to my hips, grabbing them with need. He pulls my body even closer to his, an involuntary moan escapes me and causes Steve to stop. I open my eyes slowly. His hair’s disheveled, lips spread, panting, and his eyes are focused on my face. I see nothing else but the warm brown oh his eyes, they’re sparkling in the darkness of my room. Our close proximity makes my heart flutter, as the smell of coffee and vanilla hovers in between us.
I open my mouth to speak when the sound of the main door opening breaks the silence. Gareth.
“Fuck.” I can feel my head spin as the realisation dawns upon me. I’m standing in my room with my best friend, chest to chest, breathing heavily, with a hard on. This is not a normal best friend behaviour. And I know Gareth will give me a handful if he catches us like this. I quickly grab Steve’s hand, taking him to my bed. I push him to sit down, and he looks up at me, blinking really fast, confusion written out on his face.
“Eddie, this is a bit-“ I cut him off with a finger on his lips.
“Gareth’s back,” I lean forward and whisper in his ear. “Now lay down, pretend you’re asleep and stay quiet. I’ll think of something.”
I straighten up, ready to walk away, but Steve grabs my hand. I send him a look that screams please just do it and that gets him to let go.
I leave the room, hearing Steve sigh and the shuffle on the bed as I close the door behind me. I let a tired sigh escape me and lean on the door. I feel someone’s eyes on me and look up to see Gareth staring me up, arms crossed.
“What’s up man.” His voice snarky.
“Fucks sake, Gareth. You a fucking rogue or something.” My comparison made him scoff.
“God you’re such a nerd.” These words make me want to throw an uno reverse card in his face but I stop myself, seeing the way his eyes stay on me, scanning my face. He always does that whenever he suspects I brought someone home. It’s our house rule; one night stands are not allowed. Gareth and Jonathan witnessed all of my ‘partners’ walks of shame and one day they said they had enough, too uncomfortable with the looks each one of the guys gave them. “Do you have anything to say?” he continues.
“About what?”
“Don’t play dumb Munson. You know our rule.” The annoyance in Gareth’s voice is quite intimidating. His usual grumpy demeanour is something I’m used to, because I know he’s not actually angry or upset. But right now is different. Gareth’s fed up.
“I do. And I’m not playing dumb. It’s just Steve.” I rub the back of my neck, awkward saying his name after what happened in my room. “He had a rough time with his dad. He’s napping in my room.”
Gareth sighs. “Eddie.” His tone shifted, worry filling his eyes. “Listen, I think we should have this conversation.”
“What conversation?” I take a tentative step back, conscious of the fact that Steve is not actually asleep in my bed. Plus the walls are quite thin, and who fucking knows what Gareth wants to talk about.
“You need to stop this whole Steve thing.” The words shock me, so unexpected but yet I kind of saw them coming. As if that makes sense.
“What do you mean? What thing?” I chuckle uncomfortably.
“The longing stares. The constant name mentions in any conversation we’re having. Your smiles when he messages you.”
I interrupt him before he goes any further. “We’re just friends. Best friends. Just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I have to be in love with my guy best friend. That’s so stereotypical, I hate that kinda thing. It’s so stupid.” This time I crossed my arms, taking on a defensive stance and tone apparently. Gareth’s forehead is all wrinkly from how much he’s squinting his eyes.
“I never said anything about love,” he points out. And that shuts me up. I let my arms drop to my sides. Eyes wide, staring through Gareth’s head at nothing in particular. Shit. Fuck.
A loud thud erupts from my room, and a whine follows right after.
“Looks like princess’ awake.” Gareth walks off to the kitchen, hands in the pockets of his black jeans.
I sigh, take a deep breath and face the door. My hand reluctantly pulls the handle and the door opens to reveal Steve sitting the floor by the bed, arms on his knees, head down.
“Steve-“ Before I can finish, he stops me with his hand up.
“Eds, I’m gonna go now. There is a lot for you to think about. To be honest, I need to think a bit too. I- I’ll call you…” He stands up, and quickly pats my shoulder as he walks past me. The door shuts, I let a breath out that I didn’t even know I was holding. It’s going to be a long night.
A week has passed, no message or call from Steve came through on my phone. The third day after our talk I began to think that maybe the signal was fucked, but even when I went to town, I got nothing. The temptation to go and see him was overwhelmingly strong. At one point I even found myself walking down the road where his house is, but I stopped my stalker behaviour and went back home. He promised he’ll call, and I respect his boundaries.
This whole situation is so new for us. Ever since the day we were born, we never went through more than couple days without talking to each other; either through text, call or face to face, we have always talked at least once, twice a week. And I’m starting to feel the withdrawal. When I’m out, I think that every guy with slightly longer voluminous brown hair, an outfit straight from the 80s and a sporty build is Steve. I’m beginning to crave his company and saying I’m confused is an understatement. Gareth’s words have been running through my mind; longing stares, name mentions, my smiles. I hate to admit it but this literally sounds like something a high school teenager would do when they get a crush. Never in my dreams would I think that at the age of twenty would I act smitten. And it does feel weird to realise that, but God does it feel weirder to not act this way. I’m so used to being like that with Steve, it feels like my life is upside down now that I’m not stealing glances at his handsome face when he’s not looking my way. Or ‘accidentally’ looking at his ass when he’s walking up the stairs before me. Or playing with his hair when he’s asleep during our movie nights.
That’s when it hits me.
I get off my bed, grab my keys from the bedside table and dash out the door. I run past Gareth and Jon, grabbing my helmet and storm out the apartment. Their startled voices die down as the main door slams shut behind me. The rain’s heavy, making it harder to see anything in the darkness of the night, but it doesn’t stop me from making my way to my bike. The engine starts smoothly so I put the helmet on and ride off towards Steve’s house.
I manage to get there in ten minutes, which is awfully quick, especially when it’s pouring it down. I get off, completely soaked and leave my helmet on the bike. I run up the set of stairs to the front porch of Harrington’s house. It’s like im in a trance, each step is automatic and my fist hits the door as soon as I stop in front of it. Footsteps from within the house get louder and the door opens, revealing Steve Harrington himself. His hair is ruffled, each strand facing different direction. His eyes are slightly droopy, a clear pillow line imprinted on his cheek. He yawns and seems to finally realise I’m standing at the door as his eyebrows shoot up, eyes widen and his lips part, words stuck in his throat.
“I’m not in love with you,” I say quickly before he gets a chance to compose himself.
“What?”
“I’m not in love with you. I do love you Steve, but I’m not in love.” My breath hitches, so I close my eyes and inhale, trying to calm my heart. Steve’s just standing there, staring right into my eyes, waiting. “There is a part of my brain that you somehow occupy. Everyday I think about you. Your smile. Your cluelessness about everything I like. But also your willingness to learn. You always try to enjoy what I enjoy, but if you don’t you’re honest about it. And you’re so kind, and so hot. Like trust me I’m super attracted to you. Have been for a long time now. I’m pretty sure you were my gay awakening. Or maybe that was Brokeback Mountain. Well you definitely had your part in it.” Steve stops my waffling, shaking his head.
“I,” he pauses. “I don’t get it. Don’t get you.” His voice is shaking, and he puts his hand through his hair, bringing back the Steve hair everyone knows.
“I love you with all my heart. But a part of me doesn’t allow me to be in love with you. Doesn’t allow me to hurt you.” I sigh and Steve looks down at his mismatched basketball socks. “But…” His head shoots up, facing me once again, his eyes are sparkling like they were that night in my room. “I want to try. I need to try. For you. And for us.” I smile.
Steve comes out and wraps his arms around my neck, hiding his face in the crook of it. Wet drops fall on my skin and his body is shaking slightly. His heartbeat is faster, mine quickening up to match his pace. I return the hug, my hair dripping on him, his clothes slowly get wetter. But we don’t mind. We’re engrossed in the warmth of each other’s embrace.
“The past week was hard.” His voice rings in my ear, the warmth of his breath on my neck.
“Excruciating.” I add, leaning my chin on the top of his head. “It’ll be even harder from now on.”
“You know me.” Steve looks up to meet my gaze. Our heights are similar, but he’s slightly scrunched up against me. A smirk on his pretty lips. “I love a challenge.”

the stranger things i hate about you
chapter five: the hideout pt2
| 1.5k words | 10 things i hate about you!steddie |
‘Fuck. What’d I get myself into?’ Steve mumbles, pacing back and forth. Robin is laying on his bed, fully stretched out, following him with her eyes, slowly starting to get dizzy from the boy’s constant movement.
‘Harrington, calm down.’ She sighs. ‘Nothing bad’s happened yet.’
Steve stops in his tracks, slowly turning to face the brown-haired girl. ‘Yet?’ he exclaims, ‘Yet?’ The word leaves his lips once more, pitch a bit higher, and he slowly shakes his head. ‘Can’t believe it.’
‘Oh, come on. That’s just a phrase.’ Robin sits up, tucks her hair behind her ears and claps to signal she has something to say. Steve looks at her, exasperated. ‘Listen. It’s gonna be alright. You’re just gonna have a friendly chat with him. It’s not like I expect you to seduce the guy.’
‘What do you expect from me, Robin?’ That question causes the girl to double back, her eyes wide, but expectant. Is that the Steve Harrington many have talked about? Confident, blunt, and a little bit clueless.
‘I-‘ Steve doesn’t even let the girl finish before he starts speaking again.
‘What is your motive? Why do you want me to do this? Wait, I've got another good question. Why me?’ Words fly out at such speed, Robin struggles to fully understand him, a weird grimace taking over her face.
‘You’re just a loner Steve, okay? Eddie was a loner too. I just thought you’d be able to connect because of that…’
‘You only answered the easiest question.' A pause. 'Why are you doing this, Robin?’ Steve sits down on the floor by the head of the bed, leaning his arms on the mattress, facing Robin. He makes eye contact with the girl, trying to get her to speak, but she breaks the contact and looks away.
‘You don’t have to know everything about me Steve. We’re not friends. And it’s personal.’ That statement gets Steve even more curious. No sarcasm. No jokes. This seems unlike her earlier behaviour.
‘I just want to know if I’m getting into deep shit I won’t be able to get out of.’ The boy exhales, a breath he has not even realised he was holding. He gets him arms off the bed and leans back, looking up at the ceiling, extremely tired, even though the night hasn’t started yet.
‘Don’t worry. You can dip any time you want to. Promise.’ Robin sticks out her pinky towards the blonde. He looks back at her, unsure.
‘Really? Pinky promise? What are we, five?’ Steve raises his eyebrow in amusement.
‘Steve, don’t be a prick.’ Robin smiles at him and shakes her hand to encourage Steve to go along with it.
Steve unwillingly gets up on his knees and reaches out to intertwine his pinky finger with hers. Robin taps her thumb on his and lays back down with a satisfied smile. ‘Did you forget you were supposed to help me get ready?’ Steve questions, an unwilling smile on his face.
She places a pillow over her mouth to muffle a whine, but gets off the bed anyway and takes her bag. ‘Sadly, I am not a punk, so I don’t have much, but I feel like overdoing it wouldn’t do you any good.’ She looks through her bag and takes out a small pink jewellery box.
‘Didn’t think you’d like pink.’ Steve points out, trying to engage in some small talk.
‘Why? Because I’m not girly enough for it?’ Robin giggles at Steve’s embarrassed expression, tempted to tease him further. ‘That’s sexist of you, Steve.’
‘No! I didn’t mean to- It’s just. I-‘ Steve enters panic mode and struggles to say anything reasonable.
‘I’m just joking.’ Robin looks at Steve’s shaky hands, and how he’s playing with his fingers and picks at the skin around his nails. ‘I got this box from my friend. They’re very important to me, so I didn’t have the heart to tell them that I hate pink.’ Robin explains, catching Steve’s attention.
Steve’s not sure what to say, surprised by Robin’s sudden urge to share something about her with him. Sensing the boy’s not going to say anything, she carries on. ‘Well, I keep my favourite pieces of jewellery in this box and it so happens I have a skull ring in here.’
‘I thought you said you’re not a punk?’
Robin throws a pillow at Steve’s face. ‘Doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate their aesthetic. Now shut up, put some black top, jeans on, and the ring. That should be good enough.’ She chucks the ring in Steve’s direction and he swiftly catches it.
‘What about my hair?’ Steve looks Robin dead in the eye, worried, since he’s never been to a bar like that.
‘There’s no way to save it anymore.’ She says getting off the bed and going towards the door. Her face serious, but her voice giving out that she’s just joking. Steve pretends to be offended as he follows her out of his room.
‘Okay, message me if you want me to pick you up.’ Robin parks in front of the Hideout, turns to Steve at the passenger’s seat and smiles at him.
‘Okay, mom.’ Steve rolls his eyes, unbuckles and opens the door to get out. As he closes the door behind him, he faintly hears Robin shouting ‘Have fun, sweetie’ before her voice gets muffled. He shakes his head, not turning back to look at the girl who’s probably giggling to herself.
Steve’s now standing in front of a pretty run down building; bits of paint coming off the walls, one of the windows blocked off with planks, the doors having graffiti on them. It looks much worse than he expected. He looks around the driveway, only two cars taking the already small space in front of the building; a black van, with some worn off logo on the side reading ‘Corroded Coffin’ and a grey Bentley.
Steve takes a breath in, and approaches the door, then breathes out and opens it slowly.
Loud music hits Steve’s ears immediately, a remix of pop songs, some that he recognises. He’s growing more uncertain with each step further into the club, a sea of heads bopping to music, people brushing against each other. He looks for Eddie in the crowd, which has proven to be easier than he expected, with the boy’s long, dark, curls catching Steve’s attention by the bar. He’s alone, holding a drink in his hand, leaning his head on his hand and talking excitedly with the bartender. It’s now or never.
Steve pushes through the crowd, apologising to every person he as much as grazes, slowly making his way towards Eddie, his heart beating faster the closer he got. When he finally stops by the boy, he isn't sure what to do. Should he say ‘hi’, tap him on the shoulder, sit next to him?
Eddie looks back, as if feeling Steve’s presence and his smile quickly falters when he locks eyes with the boy. ‘Oh, you came.’
Steve couldn’t miss the slight disappointment in Eddie’s voice. He doesn't want Steve to be here. ‘Yeah, can I sit down?’
‘If you want to. Ain’t gonna stop you Steven.’ Eddie says and takes a sip of his drink. Steve sits down, an awkward silence filling the air.
Get your shit together Steve.
‘Did you wait long?’ Steve initiates the conversation, and is met with a laugh from Eddie.
‘Don’t worry. Wasn’t expecting you to actually come, so technically, I didn’t wait at all.’ Steve can’t help but wonder what happened to cause so much hostility from the boy, he seemed fine last time they talked.
‘Oh, okay.’ Silence again. ‘Do you come here often?’
'Really, Steve? Do I come here often?' Eddie shakes his head and takes another sip of his drink. 'If you don't have anything to talk to me about, then why did you even come here?' He gets off his stool and blends into the crowd. Steve sighs, placing his face in his hands and gets off too, determination guiding him through the crowd and towards Eddie, who's now in the middle of the dance floor.
'I just wanted to get to know you. Properly.' Steve shouts through the noise, music and drunk people surrounding them. Eddie turns to face him, still dancing, very clumsily, but his movements are charming in some way. However, he doesn't say a word. ' Listen I know I've never properly apologised. I've only given you excuses, but I don't have a reason why I treated you that way. It was stupid and really inconsiderate. I was an asshole.' Eddie stops moving.
'What was that?' Eddie asks, when in reality he actually heard Steve. He just really wants to hear it again.
'I was an asshole!' Steve shouts as loud as his lungs let him, and doesn't realise the song's finished. The whole place goes quiet, as 'asshole' echoes through the room. All eyes are on Steve, including Eddie's, a smile spreading on his face. He snickers and covers his mouth to muffle the noise, leaning forward as a laugh escapes him. Eddie straightens up flicking his hair as he does so, and sighs.
'Oh, Harrington.' Eddie pats Steve's shoulder. 'You still have a long way to go, but that's a good start,' he says and walks away, leaving Steve dumbfounded in the middle of a dance floor, music coming on again, but it's muffled in his ears.
