During the early hours of the morning, Fifth Harbour is usually empty save for a handful of drunks staggering home after a long night of overindulgence. This morning, it's crawling with tourists and residents and stadwatch alike. The chatter carries out over the water, drowning out the sound of the waves lapping against the boat.

Kaz keeps his eyes focused on the docks and not Inej's unconscious body crumpled in the other side of the row boat. He already lost one of his Crows. He won't lose another.

He squints at the crowd, searching for familiar faces as their boat bobs closer to Ketterdam. He raced out of the Slat as soon as he heard the news, but Roeder must have reached the Fahey Mansion in the time it took Kaz to row out to Hellgate and back. Many people in Ketterdam will not be happy to hear the Wraith survived the wreckage. Inej needs familiar faces to escort her somewhere safe, and Kaz needs Dregs he can yell at until he can wrap his hands around the throat of the person who dared to hurt her.

Kaz's arms keep moving, even as his muscles burn from the exertion of the night. There's only his oars slicing into the water, and the shaky rise and fall of Inej's chest to keep him tethered.

There — a dark hand waves a top hat frantically above the crowd. Jesper shoves his way through the mob of people awaiting them on the docks, Wylan clutching the back of his shirt. Kaz rows with a renewed determination, ignoring the ache in his arms.

"We're nearly there," he says, knowing Inej can't hear him. "Hold on."

The Dirtyhands of a few years ago screams inside his head to cover his hands, to run away, to never be seen so weak. But there's nowhere to run except the True Sea, and the brief slide of his fingers against Inej's damp hands were enough to set his own off shaking. He knows this will be a blow to his reputation. The idiots who flocked to the harbour to see the wreckage of The Wraith will report back to the other gang leaders that Brekker's gone soft.

Inej has always been his weakness. Van Eck knew that. By sunrise, so would the rest of the Barrel.
