4. Out of joy that the children had recovered, the peasant ran to the tavern where I am now sitting, and drank himself into oblivion. So oblivious that he forgot to give the witch her payment for her help. The witch got angry and poured completely different herbs, black salt sand, and crushed frog skin into the stream, and instead of spells, she shouted the strongest curses! The water in the stream turned red.

От радости, что дети выздоровели, мужичок побежал в ту самую таверну, где теперь сижу я, и напился там до беспамятства. До такого беспамятства, что забыл дать ведьме её плату за помощь. Разозлилась ведьма и в ручей насыпала уже совсем другой травы, чёрный солёный песок и толченую лягушачью кожу, а вместо заклинаний произнесла самые сильные ругательства! Вода в ручье стала красной.

3. The witch cast a spell over the well from which the stream flowed. She sprinkled dried herb powder into the water, added local salty earth, spat three times and told the peasant to give the water from this well to his children to drink. The man did so. Ведьма прочла заклинание над колодцем, из которого вытекал ручей. Посыпала в воду порошок из сушеных трав, добавила туда местного солёной земли плюнула три раза и сказала крестьянину, чтобы водой из этого колодца он напоил своих детей. Мужчина так и сделал. Как только дети выпили заговорённой воды, они сразу порозовели, у них появился аппетит, а на лицах заиграла улыбка. Продолжение завтра

Many years ago, there stood a village in this very place, home to the most hardworking and friendly people imaginable. In those parts lived a witch, whom the villagers often turned to for help. She could summon rain or bring dry weather for the harvest, cure illnesses, or protect crops from swarms of insects. She could also cast love spells or break them—in short, everything that an ordinary witch would do. And always, in gratitude for her aid, the people would give her something in return: sometimes clothes, sometimes food, or even just a beautiful stone.

One day, the children of one of the locals fell ill—a boy and a girl. With each passing day, they grew weaker, wasting away before their parents' eyes. Without a second thought, the desperate father went to the witch and begged for her help.

Много лет назад в этом месте была деревня, где жили самые трудолюбивые и доброжелательные люди на счете. А ещё в этих местах жила ведьма, к которой за помощью часто обращались жители этой деревни. Ведьма могла вызвать дождь или установить сухую погоду для сбора урожая, вылечить болезнь или спасти посевы от нашествия насекомых. А ещё сделать приворот или отворот, в общем, всё то чем обычно занимаются самые обычные ведьмы. И всегда в благодарность за помощь, люди ей что-то дарили: кто одежду, кто еду или просто красивый камушек. Однажды, у одного из местных жителей заболели дети: мальчик и девочка. Каждый день им становилось всё хуже, они угасали прямо на глазах. И недолго думая он попросил спасти ведьму помочь ему.

1. There's a mysterious very place in Serbia called Devil's Town. Wikipedia tells us that there's nothing mysterious there, just nature: minerals, rain, and wind sculpted the rocks into bizarre shapes. But who believes what's written in Wikipedia and school textbooks anyway! Once I stepped into a local tavern. Sitting by the fireplace, I shared some plum vodka with a local resident, who told me the real story about that amazing place.

Есть в Сербии таинственное место под названием Город Дьявола. В Википедии мы сможете прочитать, что там нет ничего таинственного, просто природа, соль земли, дожди и ветер придали скалам причудливые формы. Кто же верит тому что пишут в Википедии и школьных учебниках!

Однажды я заглянул в местную таверну и, сидя у очага, выпил сливовой водки с местным жителем, который рассказа мне настоящую правду об этом удивительном месте.
