The jingle of the bells above her boutique’s door always signified the entrance of a customer, and even in the back of the shop, Minnie would hear the noise and straighten up, preparing herself for a polite, professional yet friendly interaction. But the familiar voice that called out along with the tinkle of bells prompted a different reaction, one entirely unique to the owner of that voice. Nobody besides Mickey could earn the particular response of her heart simultaneously lifting like a bird to the air and twisting like a soft pretzel.
There was no doubt about it that he was her favorite person in the world; he had been there for her in the darkest times of her life as well as the happiest—he was the reason for so many of her best memories, and so much of her strength came from the support her gave her when she was struggling through her difficult childhood. In so many ways, Michel was the love of her life, the person who knew and understood her better than anyone. And all of that made it difficult, sometimes, to be around him. It was paradoxical, the way he calmed her nerves and made her feel so comfortable in her bones, with just his mere presence around her; and yet at the same time, she also ached from it. He was her best friend, but there was always a sense that he should be something more.
Of all that she had been through in life, it was almost more cruel of the universe to have given her and Mickey their day in the sun before they were ready for it. They had been together when they younger, and separated to each pursue their dreams, but now that they were both successful and had little else to reach for, wasn’t it about time to open that door to the past and try again? Perhaps they were each waiting for the other to knock first.
“Hi, Mickey! I’ll be out in a minute,” she called toward the front of the shop, brushing the wrinkles out of her skirt and fixing her hair before scurrying out from the back and greeting him with a warm smile. Minnie noticed the items in his hands, immediately recognizing the uniform shirt she had designed for House of Mouse and fearing something was wrong. “Oh, what’s this? Don’t tell me you’ve ripped the shirt I designed specially for you,” she gently teased.

CLOSED STARTER FOR @minervasouris’ MINERVA SOURIS & MICHEL MOUSE
Ever since he was a child, Michel loved stories. Everything about being involved, engrossed, invited into a whole other world, being so taken by word or picture that your mind just held onto it, had always fascinated him. It was what spurred him on to trying to be an actor, into being part of and making those stories too. In all stories, there are tropes, cliches, and the thing about them was that he truly never minded when they were in the things he read or saw. They were tools, if anything, to help the story along. It was like this, to him - he had coffee the same way every morning, because he enjoyed it so much that he wanted to make it part of his daily life. He just didn’t particularly care for cliches when they personally applied to him.
If there was a way to describe his relationship with Minnie, it was the epitome of right person, wrong time. Childhood sweethearts into high school lovers that was cut short by him chasing the starlight that had already faded before he even got close. It had been amicable, there hadn’t been many tears, but he knew better than anyone that he had truly done the wrong thing, going to California when he did. So, when he’d come home, he had tried to make it up to her. To all of his friends, actually - the restaurant hadn’t been enough to quell his deep-seeded guilt. He pitched in to help Donald fix his houseboat, gave George the head manager position just under him, and with her, he commissioned her and her boutique to help him with new House Of Mouse uniforms. She always had an eye for things like that; it was one of the things he especially liked about her. He’d decided to stop by her shop rather than make her take the trip to see him, a small bouquet of pink and orange daisies in one hand and a much larger problem in the other. He always felt strange about torn clothes, but the seam seemingly splitting on one of his work shirts and leaving his shoulder to elbow exposed wasn’t something he could manage on his own, even if he tried.
So, he walked through the door, the gold bell tinkling overhead, calling as he did so, “ Min, you here ? ” It was normal for the shop to be empty in the front like this, since she was one of the maybe five people total who worked there and even he knew she did most of the work.

Angelique’s eyes lit up at the mention of art as she thought of the pieces she could commission for Minnie. “Oh, no worries at all, I know plenty of local artists who would love to help. We could even get some photography mixed in with it. I’m a fan of mixed media if it’s done right.” She’d worked with some of the artists in town before to design specific pieces for certain spaces, and it was one of her favorite parts of the job: it made each space feel more personal with a touch of custom art.

“Oh, that sounds just fabulous!” Minnie exclaimed, clapping her hands together in delight. She already couldn’t wait to see how everything would turn out when finished, but she knew the journey of putting it all together was the real fun part. She was lucky to have a friend who really knew what she was doing when it came to interior design. Fashion was Minnie’s lane, and she liked to think she had a decent artistic eye in other aspects as well, but there was no way she could compare with Angelique’s expertise when it came to decorating a room. “Now when should we start redesigning the boutique?” she joked.

Binx hadn’t thought twice about how they’d just spoken to the woman, ready to eat the cat food as if nothing had just happened. They even began to take a few bites, completely unfazed by the shocked expression on the woman’s face. But as she spoke back to him, asking if he’d just spoken, the realization suddenly hit. Oh shit, did I really just do that? They stopped eating the cat food, taking a small step away from the can to make eye contact with the woman. Maybe they still had time to redeem themselves, letting out a soft meow instead of responding in words.
The cat wasn’t fooling her with that authentic meow of his...If he hadn’t understood her, he would have happily continued eating, minding his own business in his little cat world, but he knew she had heard him speak and was putting on a performance! That, or maybe she just wanted to believe. Perhaps this was an ordinary cat after all, and she was just looking for something magical in the mundane. Still. “I’m sorry if I offended you,” she apologized, wondering whether that was the problem. “I didn’t mean to say that you look like a stray—only, most house cats have collars in case they get lost, see?”

Adella hadn’t had an honest shopping spree in a while, so, at the suggestion she smiled bright. Soon enough Winter would be ending and Spring would be on the way, so it was definitely time to help her wardrobe change with the seasons. “I think it sounds like a wonderful idea,” she grinned. “Lunch and shopping. Is there any simpler joy?” She wrapped her arm in Minnie’s and leaned her head against her shoulder as they walked, a makeshift hug. “Is there anything you need to get? I’m dying for a good, simple white dress. And of course a Birthday outfit.” Her birthday wasn’t until the end of the month, but it was never too early to be prepared.

Minnie was happy to walk arm in arm with her friend, planning a lovely lunch and shopping date; she couldn’t answer as to whether there was a simpler joy, because it sure was hard to come up with anything else! Maybe music, or a cuddle with a fluffy pet—but that was it. She hadn’t forgotten Adella’s upcoming birthday, but the mention of it made her perk up and she quickly answered, “If you find something today, I’ll still have time to design you a matching bow! Oh, I don’t know if that’s your style, but I won’t be able to resist.”

With a grin, Angelique shook her head at her friend. Minnie wasn’t one to ask for much, especially not to take advantage of anyone. “S’il vouz plait, you don’t have to pull my arm when we’re talking about Paris.” With a bit of a gasp, Angelique began running the ideas through her mind. “Oh, my goodness. We’ll do a bit of a muted black and white, with pops of maybe lavender or pink around? What do you think? And don’t worry, mon amour. Anything for you.”

~
Minnie beamed back at Angelique as she began to throw out ideas for their potential color palette. She could already imagine how romantic the space would look with her friend’s keen eye and design sense sprucing it up; this was certainly the way to attain her desired aesthetic without going the tacky route of buying Eiffel Tower decorations. “I’m also looking for a few fine art pieces for the walls—is that something you do, or will I have to speak to an art dealer separately?” she mused.

binxinthenight:
Cat Binx was used to strangers approaching them when they were roaming the town, always mistaken for a lost cat or, more commonly, a stray. It was odd to be considered a stray when they did in fact have a home, though that didn’t mean that they went to it in their cat form. Roaming the town as a feline wasn’t all that bad, anyway. They approached the woman and immediately sensed she was harmless, rubbing its face against her hand gently. Though the thought of eating cat food as himself was disgusting, their cat like instincts always kicked in and they couldn’t help but be excited as a can was pulled from the woman’s purse. “Thanks,” the cat answered, unsure why they decided to talk to the woman out of nowhere. “I’m not really a stray though, but this is still appreciated.”
There was nothing like helping an animal, its gratitude only being a bonus reward beyond the natural positive feeling of doing something good but certainly not expected. As the cat verbally thanked her for the meal, Minnie sat on her heels in front of them and blinked, mind going completely blank for a few seconds in shock. It seemed almost impossible that the cat himself had actually spoken to her; it was so much more likely that she was somehow hallucinating, wasn’t it? But of course there had always been a part of Minnie that had been open to believing in magic—all she had ever really needed was proof. And now...well now she wasn’t sure what to think! “Pardon me,” she replied, apologizing for the offense she’d caused by assuming the cat was a stray. “I...I’m sorry—are you really speaking?”

“Oooh, you tempt me.” If there was one thing Adella loved, it was good food. And there were so many places to choose from in Walt Grove alone. “How about Tiana’s Place?” It was a favorite of Adella’s, and she hadn’t had it in a minute. It was kind of Minnie to offer to pay for their meals, but she also knew that the favor would be returned soon enough. “You know I can’t say no to their menu. Where to after that?”
Tumblr media
~
The suggestion of Tiana’s Place was quickly accepted with a nod and a smile—if she wasn’t biased in favor of Mickey’s restaurant, the other would absolutely be a shoe-in for Minnie’s favorite. “What do you think of a little shopping spree?” she replied, answering Adella’s next question with another of her own, a sly smile on her face. “It’s a perfect day! We’ll be all fueled up from our lunch!”

Elaine loved her job; sure, she’d rather be one of the artists hanging paintings on the wall but there wasn’t a more fitting place for her to spend all of her time on the clock. Though giving tours wasn’t her cup of tea, as long as those could be avoided. “That is one of my favorites,” she spoke honestly, turning her eyes to the piece Minnie was pointing out, “and one of the more underrated. It’s one of those pieces that I look at, and I can tell someone truly put their entire soul on display, every empty piece of it. It feels like they’re screaming ‘look at me, I’m right here’, while people continue to walk past, distracted by bright colors and more obvious beauty they don’t have to dwell over to understand.”
Tumblr media
~
The answer Minnie received from asking the gallery employee for her opinion was a more thorough and introspective answer than she might have hoped to expect; some would simply shrug at the stranger asking them a question, and they would never have had this little moment of connection. For Minnie, that was was art was about more than anything—expressing oneself to the world and providing a forum for others to see pieces of themselves reflected in it, to bond with others who had the same feelings inside, but just couldn’t express them so easily. It was why she loved music, why she loved fashion. They were all forms of art. “Are you an artist?” she asked, wondering whether the woman’s personal connection to the piece spoke to her own creative spirit.

“Oh, hello there!” Minnie crouched on her heels and held out a hand for the black cat to approach. She had seen them around before and was prepared this time, keeping a fresh can of cat food in her purse for just this moment. As she peeled the dish open and placed it on the ground, she said, “I hope you like this kind. It’s the only one my Figaro will eat. But I suppose if you’re a stray, you can’t afford to be picky, can you? Unless everybody else on the block has taken to feeding you when they close up shop, too.”

“Where should we eat, then? It’s on me.” Minnie had a favorite restaurant in town, but she was sure her friend didn’t want to spend more time at her place of work than she had to when she was off shift, so House of Mouse was out. Besides that, there were other places in town with great food, so she would be happy to treat Adella to a meal anywhere she chose. It was a girls’ day and they were going to make the most of it!

“How much is a consultation for a friend?” Minnie batted her eyelashes at the other woman, looking as sweet as she possibly could for the full effect—which was more or less played off as a jest. She wasn’t the kind to beg for a discount and would be more than willing to pay full-price for Angelique’s services, but this was her playful way of letting the other know she was interested in her interior design expertise. “You see, I’m going for a sort of Parisian aesthetic, but something is lacking...”
