“That nasty smell of burned meat. Is that from you?” -Norton to Alice in the Affection system.

I felt so offended for her when he said this to her, but I was more confused than anything else. After discussing it with my friends in @mintytealfox’s Discord server (check her out btw!!), I wrote a whole little novel on my thoughts on this line which I’ll dump here:

Imagine you killed 13 other miners in an explosion…I’d assume (and excuse me for being a little graphic) but I can only assume the smell of fire, smoke, charred, uh…you know, bodies would be a clear sensory memory for Norton. Considering he was near the center of the blast, the smell was stuck on him too.

This may be a hot take, but despite acting pretty callous and cold towards the other miners, I don’t think Norton 100% is unremorseful towards his actions. Especially after rewatching his trailer, the mental back and forth he appears to have with himself (i.e. with Fool’s Gold) right before he lights the flame to cause the explosion, I think shows he wasn’t really fully control of himself. Or really, he succumbed to his corrupted and twisted desires and with it, his normal inhibitions which would have constrained him from acting out on doing such a heinous deed. This created some cognitive dissonance which we can subtlety see here and there with Norton.

I know a lot of people think he did it maliciously and…well, he did but people miss that his mind was literally in two different places. It’s kinda hard to explain but think of it like disassociating with yourself and becoming the watcher instead of the doer. It’s kinda scary because you still feel like yourself but suddenly realize there’s a whole other side of you that you didn’t know existed until all those emotions, all those experiences, you buried deep inside explode. I think that’s what happened to Norton in that moment which is symbolized by the “birth” of Fool’s Gold at the end of his trailer, where we see the rocks from the aftermath of the Golden Cave incident form to become Norton’s hunter identity—an identity he can longer suppress all too well anymore or escape from.

Does Nortalice, to you, have canon potential or is it one of those random ‘oh hey that’s a fun dynamic, why not’ sorta ships to you? What got you into shipping them in the first place, among the millions of other Norton ships out there?

(Like Nortmelly for example, another one of those popular ones; enemies to lovers appeal to people, etc. etc.)

I was actually surprised that NortAlice managed to catch my attention, as shipping has never really interested me in fandoms. I would occasionally look into canon ships every now and then, but I wouldn't say they got any more attention than other character dynamics.

It wasn't the canon material that got me into the ship, but rather my mutuals (thank you @quoththeowl31 and @mintytealfox <3) that did. And the more I was looking at fanarts and reading people's headcanons and such, the more hooked I got fgdshjfgs And the more hooked I got, the more potential I saw in their dynamic. One is objective, open-minded and brave, yet can let her obsessions get in the way of her own well-being. And the other is cynical, closed off and cautious, yet is steadfast in his endeavors and self-preservation. One is graceful, one is rough. They are both persistent and willing to do what it takes in order to achieve what they want, but their approaches declares another distinct difference between them.

Now, I'd be EXTREMELY surprised if it became canon, as I have a feeling to what direction IDV is going to take. But at the same time, it wouldn't be THAT out there, in my opinion. But I may also be biased pfff So to answer your first question, it is a mix of "I think it looks cute and fun" and "there is potential". I feel fortunate that I get to see them interact in canon, as many ships don't get that (if you don't count official art and essences). Though that could also prove to be a double edged sword. We'll have to see.

I'm not entirely sure why that ship in particular among the thousands that are out there gave me such brain rot. I just really like these characters, I guess. I really like Alice knocking down Norton's walls and coaxing the best parts of him out that he has buried deep within him after a life time in the gutter. I really like Norton learning from Alice that people can be genuine, and being good to others is a viable choice. I really Norton being Alice's rock and support and comfort her when she struggles. I really like Fool's Gold being soft towards Alice, and Alice being soft towards Fool's Gold. I really like them being protective of each other, cuddling up with each other and being cute and silly together.

I just think they're neat.
