my debut to tadc tumblr.. you know how people remember songs better than anything? lyrics better than sentences etc? i think they all know some of the same songs, even if they dont remember who wrote them, or what the title is, or where they first heard it. it's much easier to feel grounded when you're singing queen and abba, just because the others know the words too.

Perhaps it’s cliche to say, but I think the key to strengthening your writing and making it feel real is observation. When you look at people, at your environment, do you really see? When people are talking, do you notice the natural pauses and emphasized moments? When there’s tension in a room, what are you sensing specifically that makes it feel tense? What is the silence doing? What happens when the silence is broken? How do people interact with their environment, physically and emotionally? Noticing, and mentally collecting the things you notice, is writing.

My number one favorite thing I love to hear is when people tell me my dialogue feels real. And of course, you tailor your dialogue to feel natural in book form, which is why we often have characters say the name of the person they’re speaking to a bit more than we might in real life. But if you can make your characters, the way they speak, and react, and move, feel real? You’ve unlocked the thing that makes people feel anything at all.
