I hope that when the day comes that Palestine is free, people don't expect everything to suddenly be alright overnight, because that won't be the end of it. There's this thing called intergenerational trauma that as an Indigenous person on Turtle Island, let me say, can fuck a People up for a long time. It will take generations to recover from such catastrophic and longstanding colonial violence. And when current leftist allies start back-peddling on their support and villainizing Palestinians if they aren't "perfect citizens" (a measurement that is highly westernized anyway), remember that trauma, especially on such a large scale, does things to people. What I'm saying is, the support shouldn't end there.

Magdalena’s work days were getting longer and longer. The long hours didn’t bother her, however she knew her parents weren’t all that happy about it. Most days she’d have to run all the way from town to get home in time for supper.
Tumblr media
"I´m home!" Magdalena exclaimed when she all but fell through the door.
Eugene threw a quick glance at his winded daughter before getting back to scraping his plate clean, "how gracious of you to finally join us," he teased.
"Yes, yes, very amusing," she said, kissing her parents hello before sitting down at the table, "so, what have I missed?"
Tumblr media
After supper when Alice, Magdalena and Theodora finally were done with the dishes, Magdalena cleared her throat.
"I have something to tell you," she said, "I didn´t bring it up at dinner because, well, I don´t know how Marion will react."
Alice studied her daughter´s face, trying to figure out wether the news were good or bad "out with it then, lassie."
"I know I haven´t been home much these last couple months becuase of work, even though I promised you and papa I´d be able to help out just as much as before," Magdalena began, "I feel like that isn´t fair to any of you, especially know that you´re here Theo. What I´m trying to say is, Ms. Billingsley has offered me to move in with her. I think it´s a good idea, it´s one less mouth to feed, and it would give the girl´s more space in our room."
Theodora hugged her friend, "how exciting, Magda!"
Magdalena gave her an appreciative smile, "thank you. What do you think, mama?"
"I´m very happy for you, dear" Alice said, "I´ll speak with your father, don´t worry, I´m certain he´ll be just as pleased."
Tumblr media
A week or so later, the day finally came for Magdalena to move out. And although everyone was happy for her, they were all sad to see her go, especially Marion.
"I´ll miss you terribly," the girl frowned, burrying her face in Magdalena´s neck.
"Now, now, it´s only a short walk from town. I´ll come visit all the time, and you can visit me as well!" Magdalena reassured her sister.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I´ll hold you to that," Alice said when it was her turn to say good bye, "farewell for now my dear girl. I´m so very proud of you. It turns out your father was right all along, that typeweriter was a very smart investment indeed."

The day of Benjamin and Theodora´s wedding had come. The bethroded hadn´t talked or even seen to eachother since their parents told them about their planned marriage and Benjamin felt it was high time to do so.
Leaving his parents and future in-laws talking outside, Benjamin walked in to the church where his sisters were waiting for the ceremony to begin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He walked up to his Magdalena and cleared his throat, "Magda, do you know where Theo is?"
“I believe she´s getting ready in the sacristy," she said, giving him a sympathetic look, "how are you feeling, brother?"
"I´m fine," he sighed, "thank you."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Benjamin knocked on the door and heard a quiet "come in" from inside. When he entered and saw his childhood friend dressed in all white, silently sobbing with her face buried in her hands, his heart sank. My dear, dear friend, he thought, how I wish you wouldn´t be crying on your wedding day.
Tumblr media
Benjamin kneeled down in front of the crying girl, "Oh Theo," he mumbled, "it´ll be all right."
Theodora looked up at him, wiping the tears from her cheeks, "yes," she nodded softly, "I´m being dramatic."
Tumblr media
He grabbed her cold hands and squessed them thight, "no, you´re not. Cry if you want to, God knows I have," he whispered, "listen Theo, I swear to you I´ll try my best to make you happy, as a friend or as a husband. We don´t ever even have to share a bed, if that´s what you wish. We decide how this will work, no one else."
Theodora had stopped sobbing, but tears still trickled down her face, "I know you´ll be good to me, that´s not my worry. It´s just-," her voice thickened, "well, it´s just that I wish to have children some day. But as you said, perhaps we´ll never share the marital bed."
"If you wish to have children, we´ll have children," he reassured her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Theodora stood up, smiling bleakly, "thank you," she whispered and embraced him, "you´re my dearest friend."
They stood there for a while in a silent embrace before Benjamin finally broke away, "come now, I think it´s time."

After one of her weekly meetings with the women’s suffrage group, Magdalena stayed behind to show Irene Billingsley one of her manuscripts.
She sat in quiet suspense, watching to older woman read.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“This is brilliant, Ms. Gale,” Irene finally said and sat down next to Magdalena, “you have quite a way with words. You write on a machine, no?”
Magdalena nodded excitedly, “thank you Ms. Billingsley, I do!”
“Very impressive,” Irene said. She seemed to think for a while before clearing her throat, “I have a proposition. Would you like to come work for me, or for us? We’re expanding and need a new secretary. There’s also talk about starting a monthly newsletter, so if you’re interested perhaps you could write columns for that as well.”
Magdalena let out an involuntary squeal, “my goodness, of course! I’d be honoured!”

That night, Magdalena stood in front of her parents´ bedroom door, gathering up courage to tell them the news. Finally she knocked and Alice opened the door, "Magda," she smiled, "did you want something?"
Tumblr media
"Good evening mama, may I come in?" Magdalena asked, Alice nodded and gestured her daughter inside, "good evening, papa."
"What´s on your mind, dear?" Alice asked and walked over to Eugene.
"Well, I´ve been offered work," Magdalena said slowly, "it would be six days a week, monday to saturday. I´d still have time to help out at home," she swallowed nervously, "I´m going to accept."
Tumblr media
"Why, of course you will!" Eugene exclaimed.
Alice walked over to her daughter and hugged her tight, "congratulations my love. We´re very happy for you."

Marion stood in the doorway to the kitchen, silently watching her brother and parents having yet another one of their arguments. She sighed, home life hadn’t improved in the least, and Marion was bearing the brunt of it. With her parents and Benjamin constantly bickering, and Magdalena’s tendency to disappear in to her books, she felt alone and ignored.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Realising neither her brother nor parents would be able to join her for a walk, Marion went to try her luck with her sister.
But once again she was disappointed, “sorry, Mari,” Magdalena mumbled, barely looking up from her book, “I must finish this chapter, then I have my meeting. Go look for Adriana.”
Tumblr media
Adriana, however, had just gone down for a nap. So, accepting defeat, Marion decided to go out on her own.
Tumblr media
As she was walking up one of the paths she´d taken hundreds of times before, Marion suddenly heard voices. Intrigued, she followed the voices and happened upon a house being built. A man and woman stood next to the unfinished house, deep in a conversation about what type of wood to use for the stairs. To Marion´s delight, she saw a girl the same age as her sitting with the couple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The girl soon noticed Marion and excitedly waved her over, "good day! What´s your name?"
"Marion, I live down there," Marion pointed back from where she just came.
"I´m Agnes," the girl said, "oh and this is my mother and father," Agnes looked back at her parents who had paused their conversation to greet Marion.
"Nice to meet you," Marion said and, unsure of how to act, curtsied, "I could show you around if you´d like," she then said to the girl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Please may I, mama?" Agnes begged her parents, "I promise I´ll be back in time!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agnes´ mother had barely said yes before the two girls took off running, both eager to finally have someone to play with.

Benjamin couldn’t stand being at home. No matter how much he yelled and quarrelled with his parents, they just wouldn’t budge. Every chance he got, he’d go out to the ruins just to sit alone and wallow in his own misery. On one such occasion, Magdalena and Marion decided to go look for their brother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they finally found him, Marion lit up, “Ben, there you are!” she exclaimed and excitedly ran up to him, “papa is wondering where you are, he wants some help with the chickens.”
Benjamin rolled his eyes, “to hell with him.”
Marion’s face dropped, she looked up at her sister, confused over Benjamin’s crude words. Magdalena gave him a stern look, “don’t speak like that in front of Mari.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Benjamin sighed, “our sister is right, as she so often is,” he smiled bleakly, kneeling down in front of Marion, “forgive me, I didn’t mean to be so harsh.”
“It’s all right, ” Marion said and gave her brother a hug, “can’t you come home with us?”
Benjamin nodded, “of course I can.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That night, when Marion and Adriana were fast asleep, Magdalena tip toed over to Benjamin’s bed where he laid sulking. She sat down and laid a comforting hand on his shoulder, “would you like to talk about it?”
Benjamin shook his head, “I don’t know what there is to talk about. They’re not going to change their minds.”
Magdalena nodded, she didn’t know what to say, how to comfort. She wanted to tell her brother about Cecilia, to show him she understands his pain, but it felt impossible, it was impossible. She felt tears starting to burn under her eyelids, and as hard as she tried to fight it, one teardrop managed to escape and now slowly ran down her cheek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Benjamin quickly sat up, “oh Magda, you don’t have to cry for me,” he said, “I will be fine.”
“I know, I know. It’s not that,”
“Tell me,”
“I can’t,“ she whispered, her voice thick, “you’ll hate me.”
“Please, Magdalena. I’ve noticed something has been weighing on you,” he insisted, “I want to help- I will not hate you!”
Magdalena hesitated for a moment, “very well,” she finally agreed, “you’ll remember that Cecilia and I- well we were quite close for some time. But, it was… it was more than that,” she fell quiet, her eyes firmly fixed in the wall, scared to even look at her brother.
Tumblr media
But suddenly she felt an arm around her shoulders. And in the silence, Magdalena knew Benjamin understood.

Benjamin had been back from Britechester for quite some time, but much to his parents dismay, his dedication to the performing arts had not dwindled.
And so one day, as autumn was sweeping across the country, Eugene and Alice told Benjamin to put on his sunday clothes for a visit to the Williams family. The reason for their visit his parents wouldn´t tell, and this worried him greatly.
Tumblr media
Benjamin´s concerns were only intensified as they were welcomed in to the dining room where Theodora already sat by the table with a melancholy expression. He was asked to sit down next to her, their parents sitting on the other side of the table.
The mood in the room was serious, almost unbearably so, "could someone tell me what this is about?" Benjamin finally asked, not able to take the tension any longer.
Alice cleared her throat, "yes, let´s get to the matter at hand," she said, getting an agreeing nod from the others, "I´ll be blunt, we have decided that it would be for the best if you two were wed as soon as you both turn eighteen."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Benjamin´s mouth dropped. Certainly this must be some sort of cruel jape, he thought. He looked over at Theodora, she refused to meet his eyes however, "what in God´s name are you saying?" he exclaimed.
"Please, son, calm down," Eugene said, he too avoiding Benjamin´s eyes.
Benjamin stood up, almost knocking over the chair he´d sat on, "calm down?" he all but shouted, "calm down you say? This is madness! Mother, you can´t be serious!"
"We are, lad," Mr. Williams said, "so please, sit down and be reasonable about this."
"Theo? Say something!" Benjamin pleaded, ignoring Mr. Williams. But Theodora only let out a quiet sob.

As for Magdalena, her days were mostly spent reading and writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’d also started attending the weekly meetings of the local women’s suffrage movement.
The memories of Cecilia haunted her less and less. That was until one day, as she was walking to one of the meetings, she saw Cecilia standing outside the house where the meetings were held.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Magdalena froze, all the feelings she up until now had managed to push to the back of her mind came washing over her once more. She soon gathered herself however and walked up to Cecilia, clearing her throat as she got closer, "good evening, ms. Grey," she said coldly.
Cecilia looked up with watery eyes, "Magda," she said, her voice hoarse, "I was hoping to see you."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Magdalena chuckled dryly. How ironic, she thought, I´m in control now, "well, here I am. Say your piece."
Tumblr media
"I wanted to apologize," Cecilia sighed. Magdalena stepped closer and narrowed her eyes, her past lover pressing herself against the wall, seemingly wanting to sink through the floor, "I´m sorry."
"I don´t want your apology," Magdalena said, shaking her head, "it´s too late Cecilia.”
