I'm really excited for these inauguration crowd numbers to come in.
Don’t cook the books either Donald. We all know your event was dry. No matter how many times CNN anchors repeat majestic or peaceful transition of power. The world can see America divided and the chaos in the streets. Barack we love you but it would’ve been equally presidential if you would’ve just walked on out while Donald got through that struggle speech trashing your career. The majority knows man, we know you did good. We see it. The majority sees Donald for who he is too. He ain’t slick. And it’s too bad the majority doesn’t count. In any event, a first family that I can relate to will be missed. Really though.

Radiohead’s “The Butcher“: Production+Instrumentation
Since this track only exists as a studio recording, one can only guess at who played and programmed which instruments. However, it was likely very much a joint effort, with much of the loop and beat programming being undertaken by most, if not all, of the members of the band.

[Intro]
0:00 ENTER Drum machine (Elektron Machinedrum?), Sample from a Scott Walker documentary. Here, the Sample is contain three “hits” in a dotted rhythm, and the pitches of the three do not vary between repeats.
0:04-0:06 Scratchy noise (probably generated by the Machinedrum) Delay is added to the documentary Sample, getting getting gradually more intense over three repeats before stopping.
0:07 ENTER Snare (Drum machine).
0:10 ENTER Center: Synth noises.
0:12 Delay added to sample for a fraction of a second.
0:13 ENTER Center: Bass synth (Jonny’s Minimoog Model D).
0:17 EXIT  Center: Synth noises.
0:23 ENTER Left: Harpsichord(?)+Delay+Reverb.
0:25 The final note of the sample begins to alternate between a higher pitch and a lower one. (re mi fa, re mi do).
0:40-0:49 The middle note of the Sample alternates between higher and lower, pitches, but ends on a low pitch each time (re mi do, re fa do).
[Verse 1]
0:49 ENTER Center: Vocals. Sample pattern flips, ending on the lower pitch first and the higher pitch second (re mi do, re mi fa).
0:51 Drum machine Kick is suddenly lowered in the mix. (It slowly increases in volume/bass content over the next 45 seconds, before jumping back to the decreased level at 1:37).
1:04-1:07 Scratchy Noise The modification of the Sample, heard from 0:04-0:06, is repeated.
1:08 Sample switches back to previous behavior (re mi do, re mi fa).
1:09 ENTER Left: Jonny’s Ondes martenot (80′s Student Model).
[Break]
1:14 Center: wordless singing doubles the Ondes martenot until 1:18, when it diverges into its a melody of its own.
1:35-1:36 Right: “Plucked Loop” begins to fades in softly. It’s hard to pin down exactly what these plucked noises are. They’re not as rich in high harmonics as the other “Harpsichord”, so it could be an EQ’d/filtered Harpsichord or a Clavichord.
[Verse 2].
1:37 EXIT Right: “Plucked Loop”. ENTER Left: Backing vocals, Harpsichord+Delay+Reverb Right: Backing vocals+Heavy reverb, Glide/gliss synth (Minimoog?). Drum machine Kick is suddenly lowered in the mix.
1:40 EXIT Right: Backing vocals.
1:43-2:00 Left+Right: “Plucked Loop” fades in.
1:48 EXIT Right: Glide synth.
2:00 EXIT Drum machine. ENTER Phil’s Drum kit. “Plucked Loop” increase in volume.
2:05 EXIT Center: Vocals.
[Break]
2:06 ENTER Right: Backing vocals.
2:08 Bass synth switches to playing an eight note, followed by a quarter on the 2nd and 4th beats of each measure.
2:14 “Plucked Loop” volume decreases.
2:17 ENTER Left: Backing vocals, Ed guitar swell.
2:41 ENTER Center: Vocals.
[Verse 3]
2:54 EXIT Everything except Center: Vocals, Bass synth. ENTER Drum machine (Kick and Snare, Kick is still at the reduced volume).
3:01 ENTER Center: Synth noises (same as 0:10-0:17).
3:04 Drum machine Kick gets more animated/complex.
3:12 EXIT Center: Synth noises.
[Outro]
3:13 EXIT Drum machine. ENTER Center: Drum kit, Sample; Left+Right: Harpsichord+Delay+Reverb. Sample now always ends on a lower pitch (re mi do), save for every eight repeat when the last hit is omitted altogether. Left: Harpsichord has a single repeat slapback delay and heavy reverb. Right: Harpsichord is identical, but significantly louder and delayed by an eighth note.
3:15 ENTER Left: Piano.
3:22-3:27 Left->Center: Piano. The attack of the piano note is panned hard Left, then it pans to center as it decays. It generally plays exactly an octave below the Harpsichord part.
3:27 Center: Piano.
3:27-3:30 “Record scratching” noises. These were very likely generated by adjusting the playback speed of a sample while it was playing.
3:31 Right: Piano. The attack of the piano is not heard, and its decay fades in on the right.
3:38 EXIT Sample, “Record scratching”. Left->Center: Piano.
3:46 ENTER Sample, “Record scratching”.
3:50 EXIT Piano. Left: Synth/Ondes glissando.
3:51 ENTER Center: Bass synth+delay,
3:54-3:57 Overdubbed Ondes martenot in unison with Thom’s vocals.
3:56-4:01: Left->Center: Piano
4:00 EXIT “Record scratching”.
4:01-4:05 Overdubbed Ondes martenot in unison with Thom’s vocals.
4:03: EXIT Backing vocals, Harpsichord.
4:05 (Reverb of the Ondes martenot and Backing vocals fades out entirely.)
4:07 Left: Piano +Delay (dotted eight, the “sixteenth” notes are much quieter).
4:18 EXIT Drum kit, Left: Piano+delay. ENTER Drum machine (Kick only), Scratchy Noise. The modification of the Sample, heard from 0:04-0:06, is repeated until the Sample exits.
4:18-4:23 Ed guitar loop.
4:23 EXIT Bass synth.
4:26 EXIT Sample, Scratchy Noise.
4:24 ENTER Resonant synth (Minimoog).
4:27 EXIT Resonant synth.
4:28-4:35 Reverberation of the final descending pitch bend from the Resonant synth
4:35 END.
