“Uh-ho.” Gabriel’s voice turned mocking has he caught the girl mashing the cigarette with her foot. He crossed his arms and giggled. “You know, I know one of the parents here, and he isn’t gonna like it whenever he finds out poor little Emily has been exposed to the devilish toxins of second hand smoking.” He mused with a giggly hee-haa in his voice. Of course, he was joking and all serious at the same time.
Just the sound of the voice made her immediately try and salvage the cigarette she had, and her eyes rolled so far back in her head they saw her spine. “None of the sweet little angels here have been exposed to anything other than my extremely unhealthy caffeine habits. They’re always asking for drinks out of ‘Miss Birdie’s Bucket’.” She said as she straightened the poor piece of paper back out, only to find it was broken in the middle. Birdie sighed as she ripped the end off and re-lit it. She held it out in offering with a small ‘Hmmm?’

Oh Jesus, this looked about as disastrous as it was feeling. Maybe. Once Pancakes had settled, Anna was able to run after him and grab him by the collar (also known as what was left of his leash). She already came with an apologetic look on her face as she pulled the dog away from the woman and the little girl. “I’m so sorry, I can promise you that he offers you absolutely no harm.” She said before looking down reprehending the dog that sat down and wiggled his tail. Golden Retrievers were known for being sociable, kind, caring and protective dogs and this was what Pancakes had been for her the last many years of life he shared with Anna, but the poor dog had an obsession with ice cream that probably wouldn’t go away. She turned her attention to the duo and smile. “Again, I am terribly sorry. Pancakes is definitely going to get seriously grounded today,” she added looking at the little girl, “did any of your ice creams got eaten by this ice cream vacuum?”
When the girl who owned the dog finally caught up to them, she was out of breath and trying to pull him away. “You’re fine, he’s fine. I promise.” The little girl in her arms was struggling to get down and play with the dog at their feet, so Birdie sat her down and the toddler immediately buried her face in his fur. “Honey, I can tell a good dog when I see one, even if they get a little too excited sometimes.” She said with a laugh as the little girl proceeded to try and feed her ice cream to Pancakes.

mrsmabel:
Mabel walked past the back of the daycare. She didn’t need to pick her sons up, as her husband had already done that a few hours earlier, as he had gotten off work sooner than her today. She had been working at the Red Velvet Bakery all day and while she wanted to go see her children, she just dreaded thinking about the welcome home kiss. That was enough for her to take the long way home, hence why she was now nearing the car that she recognised at Birdie’s. She walked over with a smile. Any excuse would do so she didn’t have to go home, and having gotten caught up in a conversation was a good excuse. As she got closer though she smelled something quite different and then recognized it from way back when. Was the woman who took care of her children during the day really smoking a joint right now? She frowned and marched right over. “What on God’s green Earth do I smell?” She asked as she narrowed her eyes at the blonde. “I sure do hope you ain’t smokin’ what I think you are.”
With as deep a breath as she could manage, Birdie neatly put the small joint and her lighter back in the bag. Angry parents were never the best to deal with. “Well Mabel, you smell some of that devil lettuce I had and was smoking as I have no children under my care at the moment.” And she didn’t have anything in her system during the day when she had the children in her care. She ran on enough caffeine to give a horse a heart attack in order to keep up with all the chaos.

“ working with kids all day, I don’t blame you.” it wasn’t that Faye minded kids, but just the appointments she had with them at the clinic for thirty minutes could be hair-pulling stressful. “I was just dropping off updated medical records for you, I think I have everyone covered.” slender hand reaches out to offer the folder to the other woman. it was a last minute errand she been tasked with, though Faye would never be the type to say no to anything. It wasn’t like the daycare was out of the way, everything in this town eventually circled back around. “ I think it’s stupid it’s illegal, way too many health benefits from it. I’ve read all kinds of crazy studies, they’re interesting!”
Turning to see Faye, she sighed and re-lit her joint and shrugged. “Now, don’t be gettin’ me wrong or anything. I love all of them but the screams definitely don’t help the nerves. Plus, I don’t believe in modern medicine. They just need to make it legal like in Colorado.” She chuckled as she took the folders and shuffled through the names. “Yeah, that’s all of them. Sort of a late day at the clinic, ain’t it?”

The last little backpack had left for the day, and the daycare sat silent for the evening. Birdie always stayed for a little while after the day ended to be sure everything was together for the next day and that the turtle wouldn’t die suddenly in the night. The window had been left cracked one night and she came in to find a very angry raccoon trying to carry him away, so she made sure that never happened again. After the markers had their lids returned and the broken crayons picked up out of the floor, she went out to the playground behind the building with her small bag she kept in the car and got her lighter and small joint out of the pocket. “Oh-oh shit.” she choked mid-drag as she heard some foot steps on the sidewalk behind her and she hurriedly put out flame and tried to fan away the smell with no use.

A strong tug and her whole body jolted forward. Where there was supposed to be a dog, there was nothing but the broken leash now and her eyes went straight forward to the big ball of caramel fur running away and straight to the ice cream shop. She didn’t know whether she needed to run after him immediately, or just watch as the impending doom unfolded. Anna ran— it was only the right thing to do, because she was sure that Pancakes would attack other people’s ice creams. “Please, please, please hold that dog!” She yelled on the way, hoping that someone would prevent him from doing damage.
There was a little sticky hand gripping her own as they left the ice cream shop, McKenna’s quickly melting in the heat and running down both of their hands. Her mom had to work a double at the diner so she wouldn’t be home until late, and had asked if Birdie would babysit after the daycare was closed. She could never say no when one of the parents needed her, so she brought the little girl to get some ice cream before taking her to her house. Then she heard the yelling, and looked up to see the dog bolting towards her with his eyes locked on the ice cream. With a quick movement she lifted the small child up out of the dogs reach, with ice cream dripping on the ground for him to lick. “I think he won’t go anywhere.” She said as he circled around them, licking the sidewalk.

“What? Yeah, I know, the sign outside keeps falling down. We’ve been trying to hold it up.” They were about the tenth person to point that out, and with the unlikely spate of rain and gusts of wind in Raeford in July, of course they hadn’t been prepared for that. But inside the bakery, it was business as usual. “Hopefully the winds will ease up so we don’t actually have to nail the thing down.”
“If I get a chance I’ll come by and help get it back up later, Adie.” She said as she eased her way into the shop. “Least I can do since y’all always make my kids their birthday cupcakes.” Birdie always came to the bakery to get whichever munchkin had a birthday that week a treat for the party she gave them and Adie always did a great job with them. “It’s McKenna’s birthday and she wants green cupcakes, because that’s the color of poop. I’m really concerned about that whole request.” She said with a laugh.

There were two things in life that Daisy particularly loved and couldn’t go a day without: flowers and coffee. She was on her way to the shop, even if it was her day off, she wanted to see if her grandmother needed anything. But first, she stopped by The Grind, the new place in town where the coffee was simply to die for. She was standing in line, unsure if she wanted something cold or hot when she felt someone behind her. “You can go ahead,” she said without turning. “I’m far from knowing what I want. Maybe your order will inspire me.”
There was just enough time on the way to open for the morning that Birdie had enough time to stop for her morning coffee. She loved all of her kids but being awake long before seven in the morning made her sort of irritable. The kind that only extreme amounts of caffeine could help. She was so focused on getting her drink that the offer to go ahead broke the concentration she had. “Oh, well thanks,” she said as she stepped around and went to the counter. “I need this filled with espresso. Can you do that?” She sat her large Big Gulp travel mug on the counter, to the horror of the new barista. She pointed to almost the top of the mug, “To here with espresso and then the rest with milk. Price is no object.” After the poor girl turned away with the fear in her eyes of the crazy blonde lady she looked to see who was behind her. “It shouldn’t take them too long, the other girl knows what to do.” She said with a shrug and laugh.
