I spent so much time in my twenties convinced that my life was over, that I somehow ruined it beyond repair, that I was doomed to the life I had and nothing more. and now, in my mid thirties, i’m like wow.. this shit has actually just begun! I can and will create the life I want!

i remember when i got into aot i used to log the episodes i'd watched on tvtime and see a lot of hateful comments about eren (especially before s4) and i believe that most of them were a consequence of a perceived lack of masculinity in him before the time skip? in the sense that i do think eren has some masculine qualities (he's a very driven character, he's angry, active, he strives for freedom and independence etc.), but at the same time he's not a "perfect" male protagonist: since the beginning of the story there are a lot of times where eren fails, where he needs to be saved or protected, where he cries and spirals and doubts and loathes himself (my poor baby :( he's my favourite aot character), and some fans, especially male fans, can't tolerate that the character they're supposed to identify with has such clear moments of weakness and helplessness, and it's apparent in how the general audience's perception of him started to change after the main timeskip and the beginning of the marley arc where he becomes more closed-off and aloof, and looks more like a leader and he succeeds in some of his plans, making him look more masculine (even in his physical appearance, he's now older, taller, and broader, he even became a sex symbol to a lot of male and female fans 😭 he was always the prettiest man in that story tho sns) therefore people starting to actually like him more.
#there's a lot to be said about gender in aot/snk but i haven't engaged with the story in so long and im not a gender studies scholar#so idk if i can talk about it in detail but anyway what i said ofc goes for armin as well whom lots of people hated because#he was deemed too feminine and i believe that both these characters do struggle with conforming to the standard of masculinity in some ways#eren hated how mikasa was stronger than him and more skilled as a fighter and how she constantly worried#about him and protected him and even though it wasn't probably put in this way in the story if we look at it through a gender lens#he probably felt emasculated#and also the way eren used to look up at reiner (who has even more gender related problems imo) shows how he represented a model of#masculinity to him#i could go on for ever... especially about reiner and historia but i also love how snk portray a lowkey diverse set of weakened#(but still strong) male characters whether it's due to self-confidence mental health or autonomy and body related issues#susy.txt

I’m not gay but I’ve been watching you since we were kids and you were always on my mind and seeing you made me feel relief and we shared similar burdens and yes I will protect you with my life on instinct even though I claim to hate you and I still have goals I need to achieve before I die yes I remember the time you kissed me when I’m on the verge of death yes you possess influence over my heart yes I can’t deny you’re my closest friend even though I tried to hide it and yes I will stare at your unconscious face in the rain hovering over you for a minute because I just can’t kill you yes my brother thinks you’re the only one who can change me yes I need to cut you out of my life because as long as you’re here I’ll never truly be alone and even though we’ve been apart for 3 years you’re still my closest friend and you know my heart and I know yours because you’re my one and only yes I feel pain when you feel pain but like I’m not gay

So many people do not allow Armand to be a nuanced character. He is not just a lamb or just a wolf, he is both. He is not just a victim or just a villain, he is both. But his villainous traits can all stem back to his trauma. He became a villain because he was first a victim. And he may not even understand how some of his actions are villainous. He wants love and romance, but he literally does not know how to properly love someone because of what was done to him. He is toxic, but not because he wants to be. He just doesn't know any other way to be. Daniel said Louis needed a 100 sessions of EMDR, but Armand needs that plus DBT, plus some humanistic therapy, and who knows what else. He was a victim of human trafficking as a child, rape, grooming, domestic violence, two different kidnappings, forced indoctrination into a cult, torture, and he had to watch multiple people he cared for be murdered via a bonfire. He was also forced to kill his best friend and then had his rotting corpse left in the cell with him. Of course, he's not going to be normal after all of that. It's amazing he's not ten times worse. Most people, if they even survived everything Armand went through, would not crave love and do their best to obtain it even if they go about it in all the worst ways. They would only ever hate and fear others. There would be no love left in them at all.
#why some people cant understand this is beyond me#this goes for both book armand and especially show armand#both my babies :((#armand

I literally hate that the fandom has decided to cast Sybelle as Armand's daughter. That was NOT their dynamic in the books. She was twenty-five year old woman, and he spends paragraphs waxing poetically about her beauty and kissing her neck while she plays the piano. He was in love with her, and they are actually in my top three Armand ships. I swear, if the show makes her a daughter figure to him, I will scream. Do not force Armand's beautiful found family to fit the mold of a classic nuclear family when that's not actually what they were. Not to mention the infantilization Sybelle's character has endured because of people insisting she has to be Armand's daughter. She is a full grown woman, and just because Anne Rice infantilized autistic people doesn't mean we have to.
#louder!!!#i do think there some fatherdaughter elements in their relationship but imo it's also romantic#and i consider sybelle one of armand's lovers#and yes!! she's a grown woman she's my age stop treating her like a child 😭😭#tvc
